This is a sub-page of Proto:Command & Conquer: Generals/Build 98 Alpha.

Early Faction Logos

The USA logo only appears in the Warfactory texture, the other USA buildings that show a logo use the final game logo.
The Chinese logo appears in most building textures; both images were cropped for easier viewing.

Concept Art

The files which contain all the selection pictures actually contain not only that but also some concept art. Some of these are photographs, others simple drawings, but all of them are quite interesting.

Selection Pictures

At this point of development, most of the selection pictures have not been drawn yet and are simple placeholders. However, a few are already done.

Aircraft Ammo

GZHPAircraftAmmo.png

It seems that an aircraft ammo upgrade was planned (it also appears in the text). It was cut pretty late in development as the Sneak Peak contains an updated selection image and the final game still has text and a voice line related to it.

Comanche

GZHPComancheCameo.png

This selection picture depicts the Comanches from a slightly different angle, therefore three Comanches are shown instead of two in the final game. It also shows the early gold skin.

Crusader

GZHPCrusaderCameo.png

This is the selection picture of the old Crusader. Even though its model remains in the final game, this selection picture has been completely removed.

Placeholders

Most of the other selection pictures are just placeholders which have a generic image and the unit name written at the bottom (like the original Command & Conquer). Some of the units referenced, however, do not appear anywhere in the game. All written descriptions below are pure speculation since there is nothing to these units other then their names.

  • Anti T Gun: For China, perhaps a defensive building. Doesn't seem to have made it into the final game.
  • Apocalypse tank: Very likely the same tank from Red Alert 2, maybe the developers intended for it to be a Chinese unit since it's found within their placeholder textures. Perhaps it was dropped early in development since it's only mentioned there.
  • Black Hawk: Might have been a chopper, like the Blackhawk helicopter in real-life. The developers probably thought it's redundant to the Comanche.
  • Bridge Layer: Perhaps tied in with the repairable/destroyable bridges logic. Or might have been a vehicle that deploys a bridge.
  • Dragon: Maybe the Dragon Tank.
  • EMP Cannon: Maybe a defensive building or superweapon. The only certain thing is that this is for the USA.
  • Engineer: A leftover from Red Alert 2, where the engineer captured buildings. They may have wanted him back in this game, but eventually decided to use the capturing buildings logic.
  • Falcon: A planned aircraft perhaps, like the F-16 aircraft in real-life.
  • Field Gen: It's for the GLA but no idea what it was supposed to be, maybe field general.
  • Flame Tower: An interesting building, it's probably related the concept art of the same name. The developers probably removed it so China does not get more defenses than the other factions.
  • Fortress: Might be related to the African Warlords faction - some concept arts show a giant fortress made of wood, armed with WW2-ear AA cannons and fortified with wooden spears.
  • Frost Storm: Perhaps tied to the Frost Tower below or maybe supposed to be a super weapon.
  • Frost Tower: Interesting but somehow strange. No idea how this would have worked, either.
  • Gat Howitzer: Could stand for gatling howitzer, strange for a faction to have two gatling-themed buildings.
  • Gat Tower: Maybe a gatling cannon strapped to a tower.
  • Home Guard: Maybe an Infantry unit, no idea.
  • Juggernaut: Might be related with the African Warlords faction. Some concept arts shows large elephants with the whole buildings with infantry on their back, so it could be that. Also it could be an early name of the Overlord tank.
  • Lazer Trooper: Interesting concept. May have given rise to the Laser Ranger in Zero Hour, which however is unused.
  • M. Outpost: No idea what this is, its main model mesh is named "MOUTPOST", however It's definitely a vehicle given how the model is named. All factions seem to have their mon models of it which is just a placeholder cube.
  • Mine Field: Self explanatory. Probably meant for the GLA since it's found in their files.
  • Moat: A Chinese building, made it to the final game but unused and only with placeholder stats and lacks a model. How this would have worked exactly is uncertain but perhaps similar to real life moats used throughout medieval history.
  • Mongol: Perhaps planned as an infantry on horseback. It might could be related to the Asian Empire faction.
  • Ninja: The only idea where they could be from is the Asian Empire faction. It does have a model but again, just a placeholder cube guy.
  • P.B. Emitter: Could be a tank or a defensive structure, but no idea really.
  • Partcann: Maybe the partisans infantry units that were removed from the game. It could also stands for Particle Cannon.
  • Pulse Laser: Maybe a general power or an ability.
  • Radar Jammer: A planned GLA building, that's it. Maybe it jams stuff?
  • Rail Gun: Most likely a USA building, it has some concept art.
  • Rocket Storm: Maybe an early name for Scud Storm.
  • Runway: Probably the GLA's own version of an airfield.
  • Scrap Tank: A GLA Tank, obviously. Could also be an early name for the marauder.
  • Sentinal : No idea what this is and for which faction, maybe it's a tank.
  • Slave Team: Somehow reminiscent of the Worker. Other than that, no real idea.
  • Sniper: Maybe a sniper unit for the GLA.
  • Sniper Drone: Another drone for the guardian drones logic. It has a model file in Zero Hour, however it is just a placeholder. There's concept art for it.
  • Spetnaz: Obviously related to Soviets, though it did not appear in Red Alert 2.
  • Track Howitzer: Maybe a defensive building. It seems China had a lot of Howitzers.
  • Train Cannon: A train cannon is a quite interesting concept. The obvious issue is that it's useless on maps which do not have trains or train tracks, which is around 90% of them.
  • Vulcan Tank: This tank would fit in quite well in the game. Too bad it never saw the light of the day.
  • Sentinel: A tank?
  • War Council: No idea what this is, belongs to the Asian Empire.
  • Warlord: Again no idea, tied to the Asian Empire faction.
