This page details one or more prototype versions of Demolition Racer.
This page sucks. If you could make it suck less, that would be awesome. Specifically: Poorly written. Grammar and syntax issues all over. |
To do: Search more differences, add screenshots and info about PC demo |
Several demos exist for both the PlayStation and PC versions.

Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine Demo Disc 27
- Earliest game demo.
- Created not later, than on August 25, 1999 (according to timestamp of files on disc)
- No videos, including intros. Due to this change, developer and publisher logos presented on legal screen in demo. Game logo was redesigned with another font for final game.
Menus
- Most submenus are locked, some frontend (like button functionality) elements placed differently. "Single Player" was renamed as "Single Race".

- Game Settings submenu contains some noticeable changes. The demo has an option for "Damage Realism", which the final replaced with Power Ups (it's possible that enabling realism removing power ops from level). Vibration option was replaced in controller configuration submenu in retail, so this menu later got function to watch credits. "Laps" renamed as "Chase Laps".

Audio
- US demo (and European demo also as well) store music in DR_DEMO.XA, when final game uses GAME.XA and PRES.XA. Demo contains only one song, the Demolition Racer track from Empirion. For some reason, it has 4 duplicates in DR_DEMO.XA.
- This music played during almost all demo. For strange reason, the music is disabled when entering in car menu, and remains in this state until a race starts.
Gameplay
- Instead of race loading screen, demo shows control scheme.
- Countdown on start lacks sound in demo.
- Position counter in demo always displays 16 (all cars in race) in right part, when in final release this number changes and showing only not destroyed vehicles.
- No bonus items on track.
- Pop-up with amount of earned points shows a bit different (no mention to action, for which you getting points), and flies to another part of screen.

- Final game got better fire and smock effect, when car is heavily damaged. However, in the demo cars stay smoking after their health counter drops to 25%, when in the final game they only give a little smoke and stop the fire after a time.

Unused Graphics
- Frontend/loading contains another legal screen, as final game. These counterparts lacks some of logos and used earlier game logo design.
- All loading screens were slightly modified: images were placed a bit lower in final game. Also some screens in demo have weird line in bottom of image.
- US demo contains grassy.tim, which shows a loading screen for an unknown level, when in all other releases this file looks like a duplicate of melt.tim, which is the loading screen for Meltdown. Possibly, this file is a leftover from some cut track.
Unused Sounds
There are some sound files related to viper and bus cars, which don't exist in the game. Any other game releases contains sounds in unknown type of archives, when this demo stores them extracted to folder.

Euro Demo 56 and 57
Based on the finished game, with both discs containing similar files.
- Disc 56 calls the game "Demolition Racers" and marks it as "Rolling" despite being a playable demo. Disc 57 has the proper name and no marking.
- Another legal screens, difference again in some logos, which existed for demo legal screen due to absence of any videos in this build, like in US demo.
- Offers same game content for playing.
- European Demo used another loading screen with control scheme, due to changing controls in US retail version (which came earlier). On the left presented unused screen, based on US demo control scheme screen. Final European game uses same loading screen, as US counterpart.
- European demo has different high scores
