This is a sub-page of Proto:Gran Turismo (PlayStation)/Test Drive Disc.

A large chunk of user interface changes exist in this demo, with most menus being very barebones at this point.

Intro Sequence

SCEI Screen

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE SCEI.png GT1 FINAL SCEI.png
  • A subtle difference to start: the text is written in a higher quality/resolution font.

Notice Screen

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE NOTICE.png GT1 FINAL NOTICE.png
  • The Notice screen is against a black background in this build.

Main Menu

Game Mode Selection

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE GAMEMODE.png GT-JPTitleScreen.png
  • A way more simplistic background with the GT logo from the title screen, three menu choices (changing game options are performed from Arcade Mode or GT Mode menus), and your typical work-in-progress disclaimer.
  • This screen is technically part of GT Mode interface, hence the lack of loading/delay when you choose Gran Turismo option. The mode selection screen became independent in later builds.

Removed Main Menu Interfaces

Title Screen

GT1 TESTDRIVE TITLE.png

  • In this build, you need to press a button before going to the mode selection.

Arcade Mode

Main Menu

Hmmm...
To do:
  • Check if Time Attack, 2 Player Battle and Goodies is accessible
Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE ARCADEMENU.png GT1 FINAL ARCADEMENU.png
  • There is no background picture nor menu music yet here, so it's just all empty and gloomy here.
  • Option is located here, instead of choices to load or save your progress.

Manufacturer Select

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE ARC SELECTMAKER.png GT1 FINAL ARC SELECTMAKER.png
  • Manufacturers are indicated by text, rather than logos.
  • Because the Honda NSX '97 and Honda Civic SiR-II are the intended playable cars, Honda is placed as the first choice.
  • None of the Aston Martin or Chevrolet cars are modeled yet in this build, so attempting to access them gives you an error beep.

Car Selection

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE ARC SELECTCAR.png GT1 FINAL ARC SELECTCAR.png
  • There are no manufacturer logos (per above) or maximum speed/acceleration/handling ratings.
  • There is no "plate" for the car yet in any of the interfaces showing a car either.

Track Selection

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE ARC TRACK.png GT1 FINAL ARC TRACK.png
  • There is no video preview of the track; as a result, the map is shown larger.

Quick Pre/Post Race Screen

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE ARC PRE-POST MENU.png GT1 FINAL ARC PRE-POST MENU.png
  • The only things you could do after a race is to watch the replay, try again, change options (see below) or quit; you can't review your opponents or save replays yet.

Option Menu

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE OPTION2.png GT1 FINAL OPTION2.png
  • Only two options here: turning on/off the music and configuring assists in form of auto-brake (exactly what it says on the tin, although it is difficult to notice as it does not turn the brake lights on if the game does so) and auto-drive (sets your car as an AI-controlled car).

GT Mode

General Differences

  • The cursor was changed.
  • Instead of days, the game counts numbers of days (used for used car listings) by seasons.
  • Some screens, such as the Go Race and Garage menus, have different My Car indicator.
  • The shortcut bar has the exit button in orange. In the final build only My Home, Garage and Load & Save has it.
  • You cannot use Triangle or Square to go back to a previous menu/screen.

Map

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE MAP.png GT1 FINAL MAP.png
  • Machine Test and License Test were absent; the latter was available from Go Race in this build.
  • The Test Course map was absent.
  • The Home and Go Race icon had yellow background, as opposed to red and white respectively.
  • "2TH BRIDGE" was renamed "BRIDGE" in the final build.

My Home

Use this GameShark code to access this screen (WARNING: Use only one of the codes to access these screens, as it might conflict with others screen and the game will crash).

8003F135 D44D
  • Instead of trading of cars between saved games, options to see your lap time records (moved to pre-/post-race menu screens of Time Trial and Machine Tests) configuring options, or managing replays (both moved to starting screen) were in the main garage menu.
  • Load and Save use a picture of floppy disk, instead of a PlayStation memory card.

Garage

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE GARAGE.png GT1 FINAL GARAGE.png

Use this GameShark code to access this screen (WARNING: Use only one of the codes to access these screens, as it might conflict with others screen and the game will crash).

The code to access My Home is required to access this screen.

8003EBED 4141
  • There are up and down arrows in all interfaces that use car lists, including the garage and dealerships.
  • If you don't have any cars, the game doesn't display a message telling such.

Garage Car Info

  • The floppy disk icon is used again, but only on top.

Toyota Dealership

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE TOYOTA.png GT1 FINAL TOYOTA.png
  • Toyota is the only dealership in this demo; it is possible to load another manufacturer's car list (and menu music), but the menus always correspond to Toyota.
  • The dealerships menus were rearranged in the final. In addition, the Test Drive disc included Japanese text below every menu circle, and the tuning shop menu uses tuner (here, TRD) logo instead of text.
  • The menu music choice is different in this version; the theme used here would be used by the Mitsubishi dealership in the following Japanese demos and final version.

New Car Line Up

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE TOYOTA NEW.png GT1 FINAL TOYOTA NEW.png
  • The new car line-up interface is completely different, more resembling the used car dealership one with no thumbnails, only a list.

New Car Info

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE TOYOTA CARINFO NEW.png GT1 FINAL TOYOTA CARINFO NEW.png
  • There are no spinning plate for the car, nor car logo, in the car information screens.
  • There is no "TYPE" text before the drivetrain type.
  • The position of weight and power data are swapped, with the Test Drive demo also showing torque; torque was relegated to detailed spec sheet in the final.

Used Car Menu

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE TOYOTA USED.png GT1 FINAL TOYOTA USED.png
  • The BUY and SELL fonts are different.
  • The background picture in this version is a simple inverted picture of an AE86; it was replaced by a picture of an interior of MR2 in the final game.
  • A Japanese text appears on top of large USED CAR text, which was removed in the final.

Used Car Line Up

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE TOYOTA USED LINEUP.png GT1 FINAL TOYOTA USED LINEUP.png
  • Likely because the used car schedules haven't yet programmed, the used car lists are static and hardcoded.

Used Car Info

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE TOYOTA USED INFO.png GT1 FINAL TOYOTA USED INFO.png
  • Everything in the new car info screen applies here, just with no color selection.

Sell Car

Test Drive Version Final Version

Use this GameShark code to access this screen, it will replace the Toyota used line up interface (WARNING: Use only one of the codes to access these screens, as it might conflict with others screen and the game will crash).

8008259C 2E79
8008259E 7468
800825A0 006D
  • Nothing really changes here.

Special Car Info

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE TOYOTA SPECIAL INFO.png GT1 FINAL TOYOTA SPECIAL INFO.png
  • A car listing appears before you see the special car information; since there's only one special model per (Japanese) make, it got the axe.
  • Otherwise, it operates like an used car info screen, with no option to change car color.

TRD (Tune Up Shop)

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE TRD.png GT1 FINAL TRD.png
  • As Toyota is the only dealership in this demo, TRD is also the only tuning shop in this demo.
  • The TRD logo is different.
  • The position of Mission (transmission) and Others are swapped around.
  • The British spelling of "tyre" is used here, before reverting to Americanized one (tire) in the final Japanese version.

  • Parts appears to be purchasable differently: you would have to purchase items for each car type and you could do it even if you're not in that car; for instance you could buy a part intended for Toyota Starlet Glanza V even if you're in a Toyota Supra RZ.
    • This may likely explain a game quirk: if you buy a car and later obtain another instance of the same model of the car, all non-permanent tuning parts are marked as purchased, ready to equip in other instances of the same model.

Go Race

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE GORACE.png GT1 FINAL GORACE.png

To access this menu, follow the instructions in the License Tests section of the main page.

  • The GTF logo is different.
  • The standard orange circle for menus is used instead of specific logos.
  • License tests are started from this menu, instead of it's own menu on the map.
  • The menu music choice is different in this version; the theme used here would be used by the Chrysler dealership in the following Japanese demos and final version.
  • All terminologies were changed:
Test Drive Version Final Version
Single Race Spot Race
Championship GT League
Special Special Events
Free Run Time Trial
2 Player Battle Memory Card Battle

GT League

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE GTLEAGUE.png GT1 FINAL GTLEAGUE.png
  • The race event list is just a bullet list, with no logos.
  • Many race events like, the normal car, tuned car, lightweight car, FF, FR, and the nations races were moved from here to Special Event in later builds (The other four races, Sunday Cup, Clubman Cup, GT Cup, and GT World Cup, remains here).

Special Event

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE SPECIAL EVENT.png GT1 FINAL SPECIAL EVENT.png
  • Again, the race event list is also a mere bullet list.

Event Races

Three races have their own event race interfaces, the Grand Valley 300km, All-Night Endurance, and Megaspeed Cup (all from the Special Events category).

Removed GT Mode Interfaces

Some interfaces were removed from later builds of the game:

Unknown Garage Menu

GT1 TESTDRIVE GARAGE2.png

Use this GameShark code to access this screen, it will replace the Garage interface (WARNING: Use only one of the codes to access these screens, as it might conflict with others screen and the game will crash). The code to access My Home and Garage is required.

80082457 676D
8008245E 682E
80082460 6D74
80082462 0000

This screen, possibly an alternate car information screen and emblazoned with the name of Honda Prelude Si VTEC, has a button to get into the car (乗換), and four additional options. The second option, used to see car information, would be possibly the same as Info button in the car info screen.

Option Translation
戦績をみる See lap records associated with this car
詳細をみる See car information
調整する Tune up the selected car
車をよくみる Look at the selected car
(Translation: Athena (guesswork clean-up by FMecha))

Option Menu in GT Mode

GT1 TESTDRIVE OPTION.png

Use this GameShark code to access this screen, it will replace the Garage interface (WARNING: Use only one of the codes to access these screens, as it might conflict with others screen and the game will crash). The code to access My Home and Garage is required.

80082451 6E6F
800824EB 6167
800824ED 6172
800824EF 6567

An Options screen that goes unimplemented. Arcade Mode has it's own options screen (configuring only music and auto-pilot); in the final version the Options menu is located at title screen and does not use GT Mode interface.

Replay Theater in GT Mode

GT1 TESTDRIVE THEATER.png

Use this GameShark code to access this screen, it will replace the Garage interface (WARNING: Use only one of the codes to access these screens, as it might conflict with others screen and the game will crash). The code to access My Home and Garage is required.

8008244D 6874

80082505 6567
80082507 682E
80082509 6D74
8008250B 0000

An Replay Theater screen that goes unimplemented. This version has four sample replays (all played randomly when the game is idle at the title screen) accessible through title screen; the final version of the game also puts the Replay Theater on the title screen.

Curiously, although it is supposed to be accessed from garage, the top-left screen says Toyota, as if you're accessing it from the Toyota dealership.

Record (GT Mode)

Test Drive Version: Records Final Version: Time Trial
GT1 TESTDRIVE RECORD.png GT1 FINAL TIMETRIAL.png

Use this GameShark code to access this screen, it will replace the Garage interface (WARNING: Use only one of the codes to access these screens, as it might conflict with others screen and the game will crash). The code to access My Home and Garage is required.

8008244D 6572
8008244F 6F63
80082451 6472
800824F6 6167
800824F8 6172
800824FA 6567

An Record screen that goes unimplemented, but at least it isn't empty, as it features the pictures of courses (you can highlight the courses), which would be reused by the Time Trial menu in Go Race in later builds.

Special Car Line Up

GT1 TESTDRIVE TOYOTA SPECIAL LINEUP.png

As mentioned, a car selection screen similar to the new and used car selection in this build is used as well for the Special Model line-up. Since there's only one Special Model car per make, this menu was removed in later builds.

Replay Theater

Replay Demonstration

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE REPLAYDEMO.png GT1 FINAL REPLAYDEMO.png
  • Because the system to load/save replays to memory card isn't yet implemented, the replays has a synopsis instead of technical information (i.e. event name, course name, car name, replay length).

In-Race HUD

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE RACE HUD.png GT1 FINAL RACE HUD.png
  • In-race track maps have not yet been implemented.
  • Every text in the HUD are all-caps.

License Tests

It should be noted that all of those license tests are fully functional in this build; see the License Tests section of the main page for details.

License Test Selection

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE LICENSE B.png GT1 FINAL LICENSE B.png
  • The British spelling "licence" was used in this build, before switching to American spelling "license".
  • Some license tests are named differently, but otherwise still work the same as in the final.

Start of License Test

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE LICENSE INFO START.png GT1 FINAL LICENSE INFO START.png
  • The license start information text are two screens long, likely due to the font choice. To allow choosing transmission before starting, the license info screen became only one screen in the final.

End of License Test

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE LICENSE INFO END.png GT1 FINAL LICENSE INFO END.png
  • As mentioned above, the game does not check for whether you passed the time limit or not.
  • Although the top banner appears during the start, it does not appear at the end of the test.

License Test Quick Menu

Test Drive Version Final Version
GT1 TESTDRIVE LICENSE QUICKMENU.png GT1 FINAL LICENSE QUICKMENU.png
  • You can only go to the next test or replay/retry the current test in this build.
    • If you choose Next Session after the eighth test, or if you quit from this menu, you will be sent back to main menu.
