This is a sub-page of Proto:Guitar Hero II (PlayStation 2)/Late 2006 Retail Demo.

The retail demo features all of the characters that would make it to the final game, though most are hidden away and inaccessible. The patched demo allows access to the character select screen through career mode. Most of the characters are at least usable; many are missing animations and some have differences in texturing. Izzy Sparks' alternate outfit uses his Guitar Hero model and is missing textures, Casey Lynch is named "Gina Hazard", and the Grim Ripper crashes the game when used. All of the characters use different fretboard backgrounds (for the note track) as well, or fretboard backgrounds that would be tweaked for the final game.

Different names for all the alternate outfits can be found with the store text, and these are listed below. Very few seem to correspond with the actual outfits. Presumably, these were early concepts and the text was left unchanged as the store isn't accessible in the normal demo.

One thing to note is that the character select screen is very buggy and incomplete. It's lit extremely bright, and the dressing room uses the placeholder textures as seen in the OPM demo's character select screen. The door to the dressing room is rather out of sync with all of the characters (oftentimes they'll clip right through it), and this screen will occasionally cause the rest of the game to render slightly tilted. None of the characters (aside from Pandora) have outfit names, instead using their internal model names, though their descriptions, likes, and dislikes are pretty much final.

Johnny Napalm

Close to final, though with no idle animation after exiting the dressing room, so he simply hovers in a squat. His alternate outfit is called "Johnny in a Suit", though it's still the Liberty Spikes outfit from retail.

Johnny's fretboard is completely unique to this demo.

Judy Nails

Similarly close to final, but again with no idle animation. Judy's alternate outfit ("Skapunked Judy") has some texturing differences on the glasses, skirt, and shirt.

Judy and Eddie Knox are the only two characters to have unique character portraits on the song results screen. Everyone else uses their portraits from the first game.

Judy's demo fretboard is darker and doesn't have the shadow effect around the edges.

Izzy Sparks

Main outfit is the same, while the alternate outfit ("Izzy Glamed Out") is an untextured copy of his Guitar Hero model.

Izzy's demo fretboard is darker, more textured, and also doesn't have the shadow effect around the edges.

Pandora

Pandora is one of the furthest along of the pack. Both of her outfits have names, though they differ from the final ("Long Jacket" and "Silver Wings" vs "Leathers" and "Feathers", respectively), and her alternate is called "Goth Rock Pandora" in the store. Both outfits are otherwise the same as final. She doesn't quite lean against the door on the select screen, however, and she still has no idle animation.

In the demo, Pandora has a fretboard with a similar design, but is more colorful and textured than the one in the final.

Axel Steel

Axel's main outfit is similar to final, but with a different shirt. His alternate (called "Americana Axel") appears to be the same, though badly textured.

Similar to Izzy, Axel has a much darker fretboard with a wooden texture on top.

Eddie Knox

Very close to final for both outfits. His alternate is called "Classic Dax Deville"; Dax Deville was Eddie's second WIP name after King Kendall.

Eddie and Judy Nails are the only two characters to have unique character portraits on the song results screen. Everyone else uses their portraits from the first game.

A totally unique portrait occurs in the demo in co-op mode, featuring Judy Nails and Eddie Knox together. In the final game, two normal portraits are used instead, likely because of the many, many combinations of characters players could use in co-op.

Eddie's demo fretboard is more colorful. No shadow effect once again.

Casey Lynch

Casey Lynch is also very different in the demo. She's named "Gina Hazard" (and her alternate outfit is "Brynn Hazard"), and her outfits are switched. The flavor text refers to her alternatively as "Rocker" and "Rock-Chick 2", though her description is otherwise final.

Casey uses Pandora's character portrait and fretboard, as hers hadn't yet been rendered.

Lars Ümlaüt

Very close to final for both outfits. Lars doesn't quite make it out of the dressing room on the select screen and clips right through the door frame. His alternate outfit is called "Lars's Gwargoyles" in the store, a reference to the American shock metal outfit Gwar that was cut from the final game.

Lars' demo fretboard is actually very similar to Axel's final fretboard, only missing the shadow effect. He hadn't yet gotten one with a unique design, so a differently-colored one of Axel's was used as a placeholder.

Clive Winston

Same as final. Still no character select idle animation.

Prototype Final
GH2 classic demo.png GH2 classic final.png

More colorful demo fretboard, no shadow effect on the edges.

Xavier Stone

Same as final. Still no character select idle animation.

Prototype Final

Xavier still uses his Guitar Hero fretboard.

Grim Ripper

Grim still uses his Guitar Hero model, which is totally static and stands in a reference pose on the character select screen. Parts of another model are visible around the arm and skull. The game will crash if one attempts to play a song with him.

Prototype Final
GH2 grim demo.png GH2 grim final.png

A rather obscure glitch occurs if you try to select another guitar for Grim to use. As his Scythe guitar (which is what Grim is normally locked to using) isn't available in the game, the Zakk Wylde Custom Bullseye Les Paul is used instead. On the guitar select screen, all others will appear invisible with no name and (null)_desc as their description. If one of these null guitars are selected, the game will go back to using the Bullseye anyway.

Grim's glitched guitar selection screen

Grim's fretboard is totally unique to this demo as well.
