This page details one or more prototype versions of Harvester.

Harvester had a demo which could be purchased(!) for $5.95 from Merit Studios' now-defunct website. The demo's most recent EXE modification date is 07/30/1996, nearly two months before the final game's release. The demo takes place shortly after the beginning of Disc 3 of the full game, after Steve has fallen into the belly of The Lodge. The demo ends after Steve progresses to the next floor of The Lodge. Despite only encompassing a small segment of Harvester, the demo contains a notable amount of the full game's assets.

A low-quality .BMP of the Harvester logo. This was replaced with a much higher quality version of the same image in the full game.

Unused Script

A large chunk of Harvester's script is contained within DIALOG.ENG, which nearly mirrors DIALOG.RSP from Disc 1/3 of the final game with minor differences:

  • An altered file extension.
  • Line breaks appear mid-sentence far more often in the demo script, whereas the developers seem to have made an effort to avoid overusing mid-sentence word wraps in the full game's script.

The demo DIALOG.ENG script contains a very large amount of unused text that is only utilized in the full game, from both before (the town of Harvest) and after (later floors of The Lodge) the areas accessible in the demo. DIALOG.ENG can be downloaded below and viewed in any plain text editor.

Revisional Differences

The demo has a different selection of music for several rooms:

  • Level 1 Lodge Hub
  • Cloak Room
  • Last Supper Dining Room
  • Secret Scythe Room

The demo has LODGERB.CMP play for all of the above rooms. For the full game, the Hub, Scythe Room, and Dining Room music was replaced with ANXIETY.CMP. The Cloak Room music was replaced with LODGERA.CMP. ANXIETY.CMP still exists within the demo's music files, but is left unused. LODGERA.CMP is absent entirely.
