Proto:Menace Beach

From The Cutting Room Floor

This page details one or more prototype versions of Menace Beach.

When Menace Beach was rereleased as Sunday Funday, it included an extra game called Fish Fall which was a modified version of Free Fall, a previously unreleased game. The source code to Free Fall was eventually released by Roger Deforest, artist and programmer at Color Dreams. Included in the archive were two ROMs of Free Fall and a work-in-progress standalone ROM of Fish Fall.

In Free Fall, the objective is to catch falling people, while in Fish Fall they were naturally changed into fish. The prototypes show the music on/off option ("ROCK IT!"/"SHUT UP!"), except for the earliest ROM.

Graphical Differences

The earliest prototype has some minor graphical glitches: the animation of the person waving doesn't display properly, and the right hand has a couple of incorrect tiles. The final version shifted the hands up a bit to make room for some Bible verses and instructions.

A number of graphics were redrawn for the later version of Free Fall, and again for Fish Fall.
