Proto:Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver/January 31, 2008
This is a sub-page of Proto:Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
This article is a work in progress. ...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes. |
A build of SoulSilver that is more complete but still needs heavy work. Platinum had yet to be released in Japan at this point.
To do:
|
This page or section needs more images. There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this. |

Maps Loads of unfinished maps, as well as loads of messed up trees. |
Pokéathlon An early version of the Pokéathlon featuring scrapped events! |
Intro

- Professor Oak's sprite was later recoloured. Uses his FRLG design.
- Marill's sprite is from Diamond and Pearl.
January 31 2008 | Final |
---|---|
- Different sprites for Ethan and Lyra when choosing one to play as.
- Ethan and Lyra have largely replaced Lucas and Dawn, but the former Diamond and Pearl protagonists' shrinking sprites have yet to be replaced.
New Bark Town
January 31 2008 | Final |
---|---|
- The player's mother has yet to be redesigned.
- The game crashes if the player tries to leave their house via the front door.
Touch Screen & Menu Functions
An early implementation of the touch screen menu is present. The registered items on this menu are placeholders which will open the menu as if X was pressed and highlight the opposite shortcut, and selecting them again in this state will open up the Pokégear. The run button currently functions exactly the same as the B button, requiring being held down to run (unlike the final game's toggle) and also being able to advance dialogue boxes. The box in the bottom right always shows "はなす" (Talk), and never changes based on context like in the final game.

Pokégear
To do: Are the Pokégear's Map and Radio functions implemented in any capacity? |
An early implementation of the Pokégear is present in this build.
While changing themes is possible, most of them appear to be in a very early state. Additionally, Lyra's default theme is set to Ethan's default.
An early version of the Phone UI is also accessible in this build, along with the option to call the player's Mother.

When selecting the Phone using the touch screen, the ripple effect will appear at the wrong location.
Trainer Cards
January 31 2008 | Final |
---|---|
|
|
- Trainer Cards have a mostly different look.
- Shows both Kanto and Johto Gym Leaders at the start of the game. Falkner is the only one with a sprite.
- Ethan and Lyra had their Trainer Card sprites replaced with their Trainer Battle sprites.
Bag Screen
The top and bottom screen have swapped on the bag screen compared to Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The touch controls of this screen still function identically to Diamond and Pearl in spite of the graphics for it being on the top screen instead.
To do: Add better screenshot of male bag screen, and potentially add Diamond and Pearl comparison images |

Pokémon Summary Screen
To do: Showcase what the Ribbons Screen looks like with a Pokémon that has ribbons. |
An early design of the final game's Summary Screen is accessible. In spite of their icons not showing up, you can tap the touch screen to switch between Pokémon like in the final game. You can also use the touch screen to switch between the different sections of this screen but you cannot use it to do anything in the moves menu.

There are multiple bugs with the Summary Screen in this build:
- If the player returns to the Info section after scrolling to any other, a bit of garbled text will appear on the top screen.
- If the player scrolls past the Ribbons section, a bugged version of the Info section will appear.
- If the player scrolls down past the final move in the moves list, they will hover over an invisible cancel button. This is likely a holdover from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl's moves list.
Fly Screen
To do: Rip the early and placeholder minimap icons and compare to the final game |
Using the debug menu to Fly, it is possible to see an early version of the screen for it featuring a map in a slightly different art-style.

Additionally, there is placeholder text for the descriptions of all areas (differing between Routes and Towns/Cities) as well as placeholder icons for certain Towns/Cities. Interestingly, Lake of Rage uses the Town/City placeholder text, which may be related to Pokémon Gold and Silver's development history.

Wild Encounter Data
To do:
|
The wild Pokémon encounter data in this build still uses the format from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, but now has encounters based off of Pokémon Gold and Silver with some oddities. Almost all encounter types aside from tall grass are either set to 0 or 483 (Dialga) as a placeholder. With a few exceptions, this also includes time based encounters which almost entirely consist of Dialga. For some reason, Dialga can only actually be encountered during day and night in Dark Cave and Union Cave in spite of being present in the data of many maps and in the morning encounters for the ones where it can be found. Curiously, Dark Cave seems to use its Route 45 side encounters on the Route 31 side in spite of the proper encounter table existing. Additionally, tall grass in the Ruins of Alph and National Park seem to be unable to cause wild Pokémon encounters in spite of these maps having implemented encounter data.
Pokémon data bug
To do:
|
Most Sinnoh pokémon are impacted by a bug that gives them partial data from other pokémon. The following data is kept from the original pokémon:
- Sprite (in most cases)
- Cry
- Pokédex info (entry, height, weight, footprint)
The following data will be inherited from the incorrect pokémon:
- Name
- Stats
- Typing
- Form data
- Level up learnset
- Evolution data
In cases where a pokémon has inherited data from one with multiple forms, it will change sprite to that pokémon as follows:
- Honchkrow uses Burmy's sprites
- Purugly uses Wormadam's sprites
- Chingling uses Shellos' sprites
- Stunky uses Gastrodon's sprites
- Mantyke uses Cherrim's sprites
- Shaymin uses Arceus' sprites
Burmy and Cherrim appear to have incorrect color palettes applied to their back sprites as a result of this bug, though the pokémon who inherit their sprites use the correct palettes.
Attempting to view the sprites of Wormadam, Vespiquen, Froslass, Mesprit, or Cresselia through any means will cause the game to crash with an assertion failure.
To do: Is this assertion failure due to trying to load a non-existent gendered sprite? |
When evolving, the pokémon will evolve based on the incorrect data. For instance, Gastrodon (inheriting Staravia's data) will evolve into Ambipom (inheriting Staraptor's data.) Turtwig through Roserade have the battle data of pokémon in an order identical to the order of Sinnoh pokémon found in the February 17th 2006 build of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Drifloon, Drifblim, and Darkrai are not impacted by this bug.
