This article is a work in progress.
...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.

The 1993 Alpha is a very early build of Stunt Race FX (at this point called "FX Trax") that appears to be a general driving test.

Hmmm...
To do:
  • How to compile the build? And where are the source files' directory?
  • More differences, screenshots, etc.
  • Info about the various test tracks.

General Differences

  • No mode, car, and track selection screen. The game starts a race immediately after continuing.
  • Only one vehicle, the Formula One-like "F-Type", is available. The tires are also smaller.
  • There appear to be only three tracks.
  • The music and sounds are completely different. Some instrument samples are borrowed from Super Mario Kart and Super Mario World.
  • 2-Player mode is accessed by holding Up and pressing Start on the title screen, though it seems to be unfinished: no sound effects are used, the 2P screen is identical to the 1P screen, and the title screen theme is used.

Race

One major difference is that the tracks do not consist of a circle, but rather runs along a road that repeats itself after the finish line.

  • Even when turning, the camera does not stay behind the car, but stays at a fixed angle to look along the route.
  • There are no CPU drivers to compete against.
  • There are no items to collect. The HUD includes gems, but it's not clear what their purpose would have been and they have no equivalent in the final.

Other differences:

  • The boost meter refills automatically, as it does in 2-Player mode in the final.
  • Pressing Select brings up a giant cartoony-looking glove that grabs the vehicle and puts it on the middle of the road. Nothing like this is present in the final.
  • X makes the vehicle jump and Down lets the vehicle do a handstand.
  • A debug function is available by holding Start. Pressing different directions on the D-Pad makes the vehicle float without the tires.
  • Some buttons are assigned differently:
    • A accelerates as opposed to B.
    • B and Up boosts as opposed to A.
