Every world and level in this section follows the prototype's numbering scheme, unless otherwise specified. All comparisons use the first revision of the final Japanese version as a reference.

Proto Final

The prototype icon border is noticeably thicker and consists of three sections, causing the icon artwork to be just 18×18 instead of the final's 22×22. The total size is 24×24 in both versions.

Save Files

The icons displayed for the save files had only minor changes between here and the final version. Note that the borders are included here due to the text outline being part of them.

Yoshi seems to be looking at the player in the prototype. The final version has him looking upward.

As with the Bandit, Kamek was very slightly altered in the final icon.

World 7

Notably, the prototype contains a save file icon for a seventh world. Its tiles were blanked out in the final game.

Level Select

Some of the level icons are early versions of ones used in the final game, with the rest having been scrapped.

The Chain Chomp is at a different angle.

In the final version, more detail was added and the Shy-Guy on Stilts no longer stands behind an Egg Block.

The Wall Lakitu is depicted from a different angle, and the hole from which he pops out is black in the final version.

The final version changes the background and gives the Fuzzy more detail.

Leaves and more detail were added, along with some retouches to the Spear Guy.

The egg has a black outline and different angulation in the final version, probably to emphasize movement more.

World 5

Baron von Zeppelins are depicted from a different angle in the prototype. The final icon more closely matches how they're seen in-game.

The Dr. Freezegood is standing on the cable car in the final version rather than sitting on it.

The Bumpty is more detailed in the final version, especially his feet. He is also sitting on the ice in the final version rather than standing on it in the prototype.

World 6

The final version's background is darker, plus shadows were added on the Boo Guy's face.

The Skeleton Goonie is sitting on what appears to be a bunch of skeletons rather than flying in this prototype. Their shading was also inverted in the final version.

The final version changed the ground to better reflect the ground seen in the actual level. Notably, this is the only level icon that survived into the final and didn't get moved from its prototype level slot.

The final version altered the background and made the Gusty rounder.
