This is a sub-page of Proto:Terraria.
This page or section details content from the 2011 Terraria Prototypes Leak. Check the 2011 Terraria Prototypes Leak category for more pages also sourced from this material. |
This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion. Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article? |
This early prototype of Terraria is one of two prototypes leaked on 4chan before the game officially released in 2011. It is clearly unfinished, but all the basics are in for the game to give more or less the same experience you get in release. Based on the release notes, this is likely version 0.7.
This prototype along with its earlier build can be downloaded from archive.org.

Gameplay Differences
- There is no splash screen, you load directly onto the main menu.
- There is no copyright information in the bottom right corner.
- The sound will keep playing after clicking out of the window, unlike the final.
- There is no way to edit the controls, or the parallax.
- The game starts playing boss music only if you're near a boss, while the final game includes the boss music for the goblin event.
- Pressing F shows an FPS counter, as opposed to F10 in final.
- Only 193 items are present, as compared to the 234 items present at release.
- Player death text changed from "[Player Name] was slain..." to "You were slain..." in final.
- When creating a world, it gives an estimate for how large the world file will be.
- In the final, the game has two additional checks to make sure the Blood Moon only happens if there's a player with over 100 max health, and that it doesn't also spawn the Eye of Cthulhu on the same night.
- Eye of Cthulhu will never randomly spawn at night in this version.
- No jungle chests will generate.
- There are no Ruined Houses in the Underworld.
- NPCs will not receive any damage from enemies.
- The game generates 50% less Demon Altars.
- The game generates 20% less Life Crystals.
- The game generates 16.67% less underground Chests.
- The game generates 12.5% less breakables, however, because of other coding changes with how breakables are generated, the game only generates around 3% less breakables.
- The key to throw items is not bound.
- This build only checks that there are 250 dungeon bricks near you to consider you in the dungeon biome, while the final also requires dungeon walls.
- In this build there is no way to increase your melee speed; also missing is a check the final uses to make sure your melee speed can never go below 0.7x.
- You have 5 bubbles of oxygen instead of 7, and you drown twice as fast.
- Eye of Cthulhu and Eater of Worlds can't spawn.
- Skeletron has absurdly high defense, only taking 1 damage from attacks.
- Because of these factors, the Dryad is unable to spawn.
Crafting Recipes
- The last field indicates the total output of the recipe and the crafting station required to make the item.
Enemies
- Default spawnrate is 850 instead of 700.
- Pinky and Black Slime are absent.
- Slimes do not float in water.
- Many of the enemies have different stats from this version compared to final.

NPCs
- Animation for most NPCs are simpler and cruder, only having 3-5 frames of animation and only having their legs animated.
- All humanoid NPC's sprites are heavily modified versions of the initial 4 party member's battle sprites from Final Fantasy V. A few sprites (such as the Guide and Nurse) share identical designs to their release counterparts. But other NPCs (and the player character) are clearly more based on their Final Fantasy V derivatives.
NPC ID | Name | Early Sprite | Release Sprite | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
17 | Merchant | Merchant's sprites are a modified version of Galuf from Final Fantasy V's battle sprites with different coloring and shading. | ||
18 | Nurse | Identical design to the final. Uses different walking animations. | ||
19 | Arms Dealer | |||
20 | Dryad | |||
21 | Skeleton | Redesigned by initial release, but this earlier design would later be reused from 1.0.3 onwards with updated animations. | ||
22 | Guide | Identical design to final. Uses different walking animations. | ||
24 | Fire Imp | Completely different design compared to the final. It uses an attacking animation which seems to be based on Final Fantasy V's animation for casting a spell instead of walking. | ||
26 | Goblin Peon | |||
27 | Goblin Thief | |||
28 | Goblin Warrior | |||
29 | Goblin Sorcerer | Like the Fire Imp, its attacking animation is similar to Final Fantasy V's animations for casting a spell. | ||
31 | Angry Bones | Design changed for initial release, but 1.0.3 onwards reuses this design with updated animations. | ||
32 | Dark Caster | Like other skeletal enemies, design was changed for the initial release, but 1.0.3 reuses this design with updated animations. Like other spellcasting enemies, this animation appears to be based on Final Fantasy V's animation for casting a spell. | ||
37 | Old Man | Earlier Old Man design is a recolored version of Galuf from Final Fantasy V's battle sprites. | ||
38 | Demolitionist | Completely different design from final, using a design that resembles the final Arms Dealer but with different hair, a lighter undershirt, and no gold necklace. | ||
42 | Hornet | The final gore sprites for the Hornet are based on this early design. |

NPC Dialog
To do: Which lines are missing? |
- The Nurse is missing two of her lines from when you're below 1/3rd health, and one of her lines from when you're below 2/3rds health. In this version she also has the chance to say "Bend over and grab your ankles.", a line removed from release.
- One of the Dryad's random pre-Skeletron lines was changed from "Have you seen that old man walk around the temp? He doesn't look well at all..." to "Have you seen the old man walking around the dungeon? He doesn't look well at all...". She is also missing 5 of her random lines.
- The Demolitionist is missing 3 of his random lines.
- The guide's only night time line typos "wandering" for "wondering". One of his lines of help text was changed from "Demonic alters can usually be found in the corruption. You will need to be near them to craft some items." to "Demonic alters are hidden all over the world. You will need to be near them to craft some items." in release.
