The Tree Village

Prototype Final
MOWGLI GETS LOST IN THE TREE VILLAGE AS HE CONTINUES HIS JOURNEY MOWGLI GETS LOST IN A TREE VILLAGE AS HIS JOURNEY CONTINUES
  • This level actually starts you off in the same place (albeit a little higher, you'll fall as usual).

JBProto-TreeStart.png

  • There's also a Hathi Jr. right where you start for some reason.
  • The background for the huts and trees haven't been implemented yet.
  • The huts will become corrupted if you lose a life.
  • If you walk through the tree, you won't end up on the other side. You'll fall straight down.
  • There's an armadillo on the right side instead of a monkey.
  • Lots of missing items as usual. Here's an example with the first layer disabled.
Prototype Final
JBTreeProto-Items.png JBTree-Items.png
  • The hut warp sound is missing.
  • The first hut has a shorter branch, and no item or cobra. Because of this, you can't reach the platform to the right. There's another branch above it that's missing, too.
Prototype Final
JBTreeProto-Branch.png JBTree-Branch.png
  • If you miss the left jump, you might activate Hathi Jr. without knowing it. Sadly, the marker places you just underneath anyway, so you'll keep falling to your doom until you run out of lives.
  • On the other side here, there's loads more missing items (the gem is still present, and as mentioned above, Hathi Jr. is here instead of a porcupine enemy.
  • There's another Hathi Jr. on the tree above, instead of items and a bee enemy.
  • If you fall down, there's no vine to help you get back up. To make matters worse, the tree opening to let you in to the far left isn't there. And Mowgli can't make it to the right with his jump!
  • The rest of this level cannot be explored.

The Ruins

Prototype Final
THE MISCHEVIOUS MONKEYS KIDNAP MOWGLI AND TAKE HIM TO KING LOUIES DOMAIN THE MISCHEVIOUS MONKEYS KIDNAP MOWGLI AND TAKE HIM TO KING LOUIE
  • Known as Louies Temple on the title card.
  • Different background. It's also cut off at the bottom of the level (which doesn't matter too much since you'll only see it if you remove the other layers).
Prototype Final
JBRuinsProto-BG.png JBRuins-BG.png
  • As with the other levels, lots of fruit and powerups are missing.
  • At the start there's a Hathi Jr. waiting again.
Prototype Final
JBRuinsProto-Start.png JBRuins-Start.png
  • There's a skull that turns around and spews arrows here. The arrows do not harm Mowgli (though were probably supposed to do so). There's no gray monkey, though.
Prototype Final
JBRuinsProto-Skull.png JBRuins-Skull.png
  • The next platform lacks the porcupine.
  • Next platform is empty, final has a monkey and banana bunch.
  • Everything except the gem is missing from the platform just below it.
  • Next platform (the hard slopey one) has no monkey or fruit again.
  • There's no bee enemy on the next platform, and the breaking platform doesn't break in the prototype. Also, there's no fruit and the vine leading right is missing.
Prototype Final
JBRuinsProto-Edge.png JBRuins-Edge.png
  • The platform that you fall to is missing.
  • The far right platform has a monkey enemy, but nothing else. There's also a difference in the platform graphics, where it's more crumbly than in the final.
Prototype Final
JBRuinsProto-TopRight.png JBRuins-TopRight.png
  • If you jump to the far right in the prototype, you'll land on a small platform with a 1-Up and a broken vine. In the final, there's nothing but a short vine here.
  • Nearly all of the platforms on the right haven't been implemented yet.
  • Near the bottom are different items.
  • Different items leading to Bagheera.
Prototype Final
JBRuinsProto-Bagheera.png JBRuins-Bagheera.png
  • A brown monkey drops down just after that location, but it vanishes somewhere when it touches the statue seen below. There's a monkey here in the final, but it doesn't vanish.
  • This statue blocks Mowgli. It's not there in the final. Neither is the flower on the other side. If you land on the other side and grab that flower, the statue breaks and disappears.
JBRuinsProto-Statue.png
  • At the far end, there's no see-saw to propel Mowgli back up. There's another skull here, and a cobra instead of a monkey on the platform nearby. The apple is also missing.
  • There's a Hathi Jr. in place of the cobra enemy found just above here.
  • There's a second cobra enemy on top of the nearby pillar.
Prototype Final
JBRuinsProto-Left.png JBRuins-Left.png
  • A completely different platform is just above that one.
Prototype Final
JBRuinsProto-Platforms.png JBRuins-Platforms.png
  • There's a break in the slope here, which was removed in the final.
Prototype Final
JBRuinsProto-Slope.png JBRuins-Slope.png
  • The pillar you land on from the springy snake is missing from the prototype, as is the gray monkey enemy to the left.
  • There's a skull spitter just below the swinging vine, and the vine to the right is gone.
  • The monkey enemy on the small platform right of the long vine is absent.
  • The first platform the long vine leads to on the left has a 1-Up in the prototype in addition to the banana bunch.
  • There's no springy snake on the upper platform.
  • There's a broken vine which leads Mowgli back to the top of the level here.
  • The platforms to the right of the vine lack any breaking platforms.
  • There are missing vines between the platforms (and a missing pear).
Prototype Final
JBRuinsProto-Center.png JBRuins-Center.png
  • The monkey is sitting on a pillar, whereas in the final there are two who are on the regular platforms.
  • The bottom right platform here is missing everything except the swinging vine.
  • The platform underneath (with the branch) is missing the cobra, springy snake and the gem has been moved. Hathi Jr. was also moved over a little.
Prototype Final
JBRuinsProto-Branch.png JBRuins-Branch.png
  • As is the norm, the porcupine isn't here.
  • To the left of this area, the boomerang and another piece of fruit are missing.
  • The platform just under here lacks the gray monkey.
  • The platform with a gem and timer only contains a gem.

Falling Ruins

Prototype/Final
MOWGLI MUST FIND KING LOUIE AT THE TOP OF THE RUINED VILLAGE
  • Known in the final game as Collapsing Ruins.
  • This level is by far one of, if not, the most different.
Prototype Final
JBFallingRuinsProto-Start.png JBFallingRuins-Start.png
  • For starters, the level reuses the same palettes as The Ruins level.
  • The platforms are different.
  • The platforms in this version move, making progress very difficult.
  • There are no other types of platforms.
  • Enemies don't hinder your progress, because there aren't any.
  • The ruins don't crumble and damage you along the way.
  • The level itself is mostly straight forward, but at one point, you're forced to take a leap of faith with no guidance. Since the platforms are moving, this can be extremely difficult to pull off the first time.
  • There's only one gem to find, and it's at the top of the level. King Louie will remain asleep until you grab it.
  • Since there's no need to return for more gems, the way back down is blocked. Once you're up, you'll have to lose to get back down.
  • The boss plays out differently, and you can't tell how close you are to defeating King Louie. After you have the gem and approach him, King Louie wakes up and starts hurling armadillos at Mowgli. After a while, he'll slam down on the ground, and a random power up or item will drop along with another armadillo (although in some cases, two armadillos drop). After a while, he'll change his facial expression, and the bird will carry Mowgli away to complete the level. No debris falls in the prototype.
Prototype Final
JBFallingRuinsProto-KingLouieEnd.png JBFallingRuins-KingLouieEnd.png
  • Also, in the final, there's no slope. King Louie hurls coconuts at Mowgli, but he also moves across the screen and throws bananas at him as well.
Prototype Final
JBFallingRuinsProto-KingLouie.png JBFallingRuins-KingLouie.png
  • King Louie will also drop two items not found elsewhere in the game. A spade (more on this below) and a heart (a crude version of the final heart, which works the same way as it does in the final). He can also drop a slightly corrupted banana bunch. It's also possible for the items to appear behind King Louie. Items that are dropped by this boss also disappear quickly.

JBProto-Heart.png JBProto-Shovel.png

  • The shovel has an interesting yet somewhat puzzling effect once picked up. When you exit the level, the bird will include the shovel in the final bonus, where this happens....
JBProto-BonusShovel.png

You can't get out of this, and will need to reset the game. Since one of the bonus levels takes place underground, perhaps Mowgli would dig down to a proper bonus level? Who knows.

  • There's a teensy oversight with this boss - King Louie himself has no collision. Mowgli can just walk over him and keep firing without taking damage.
  • Some of King Louie's sprites can't be fully viewed in-game. This is because he's always placed to the right hand side of the screen, and some of his sprites go further than the screen allows.
  • This is the only level with a boss, thus it is the only level where collecting the gem won't be enough to complete the level.

Jungle by Night

Prototype Final
NIGHT FALLS AND MOWGLI'S JOURNEY IS NEARING THE END NIGHT FALLS AS MOWGLIS JOURNEY NEARS ITS END
  • Known in the final as Jungle at Night.
  • Straight off the bat, there's a Hathi Jr. waiting for you at the beginning, plus an armadillo. The starting platform was extended for the final.
  • Background was changed.
Prototype Final
JBProtoNight-Start.png JBNight-Start.png
  • There are NO fruit or items besides the gems on this level. You'll always be one gem short without hacking.
  • A branch was removed and the next platform moved further away. Leaves are different.
Prototype Final
JBProtoNight-Tree1.png JBNight-Tree1.png
  • The monkey on the right is missing.
  • The bat enemies are absent.
  • The gem to the right is moved over further in the final, and the monkey enemy guarding it isn't here.
  • There's no way forward on the prototype, because there's no extra platform leading you to the one just above.
Prototype Final
JBProtoNight-Platform.png JBNight-Platform.png
  • Traveling up at the beginning, the springy snake is missing, so you can't get to the platform above here a cobra resides.
  • There's a bee enemy here, but not in the final.
  • At the end of the horizontal vines, there's no swinging vine to help you up. The bat and monkey are missing, as is the heart next to the cobra above.
Prototype Final
JBProtoNight-Vines.png JBNight-Vines.png
  • An armadillo enemy can be found a bit further down the path.
  • There's also a branch and small vine leading up the tree, which aren't in the final. They don't actually work anyway...
Prototype Final
JBProtoNight-Tree2.png JBNight-Tree2.png
    • Not that it matters, because they have no collision.
  • The anteater is missing further down this path.
  • More changes. The vine is in a different place in the final, and there's an extra branch there too, as well as a swinging vine.
  • The springy snake is missing, so you can't get up here either.
    • Even if you could, the vine needed to take you further isn't there anyway.
  • Going back along the main path, the platform with Hathi Jr. contains a gem in the prototype. The monkey is missing from the next platform.
  • Another gem was moved from underneath the top part of the slope to the platform where a boomerang resides in the final.
  • Everything else from this area is missing in the prototype.
Prototype Final
JBProtoNight-End.png JBNight-End.png
  • In the tree above Bagheera, there's a 1-Up on the first branch, and the gem to the right is missing.
  • Once again, there's no swinging vine, just a horizontal vine which can't lift Mowgli higher.
Prototype Final
JBProtoNight-Right.png JBNight-Right.png
  • Since you'll always be one gem short (the final gems are placed at the very top of the level, where Mowgli can't go in this build) this is the 'end' of the prototype.
  • If you do hack the game to reach one of the final gems at the very top of the level, you'll get to the bonus screen as always, but the game will softlock after that because The Wastelands doesn't exist yet.

The Wastelands

Prototype Final
BEYOND THE WASTELANDS LIES THE MAN VILLAGE BUT SHERE KHAN WAITS AHEAD SHERE KHAN WAITS AT THE END OF THE WASTELAND BEFORE THE MAIN VILLAGE
  • Level cannot be played, although the starting 'Get Ready' text exists.
