Title Differences
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
The title uses a roaring lion head instead of the logo. Game credits has not been implemented yet, and is changed slightly to 'View Game Credits' in the final. The text is also more spaced out in the final.
Likewise, the loading screen also used the roaring lion head.
Unused Graphics
Found in ui/startup, but not used anywhere, is an even earlier logo.
Found in ui/gamescrn. There is no help available for this release.
Debug
General Information
In the zoo.cfg file, change the value at ShowAnimalAIInfo and all others after (but before AIInfoNth) to 1. Then, in-game, click on an animal, guest, etc. to display debug information.
In-Game Commands
Press CTRL and B to display boxes.
Press CTRL and G to activate a grid.
Press CTRL and R to refresh the game.
Press CTRL and F to to hide/display foliage.
Developer Mode
Press CTRL and D to activate. Clicking the little x at the bottom of the navigation opens up a new panel (strangely titled "Giant Panda").
You can do the following using this mode:
- Add a few buildings that are not normally available to be placed in your zoo.
- Modify the park entrance.
- Place buildings outside the park.
- Remove items not normally removable (for example, food and poo, or 'zoo doo' as the game calls it).
Also, placing a Zoo entrance will allow guests to enter from anywhere. Deactivate with the same code.
Placeholders
Several buildings use a Burger Stand with an incorrect palette as a placeholder.
A placeholder icon for animals, buildings, etc.
The same test texture from the final game is used in the prototype for Waterfall, Colored Tiles and RunningWater.
All scenarios use this image.
Saltwater Crocodiles and California Sea Lions use other animal icons when selected.
General Differences
- Some animals, such as Emperor Penguins, will cause guests to scream and panic if they escape. When they catch up to them, they will briefly turn into a lion, maul them, and return to a cute fuzzy penguin afterwards.
- Demolish and Message icons have been swapped.
- No Zoo name.
- It's not possible to type a custom admission price, the sliders must be used.
- When clearing items, they must be removed individually.
- After creating an exhibit, the game does not ask you to name it.
- You cannot sell Compost from the Compost Building.
- No awards (although placeholder text exists for them).
- This message is displayed when trying to download new items:
Downloading zoo updates not yet implemented.
Name Changes
- Salt Water is known as Deep Water.
- Fresh Water is known as Shallow Water.
- Forest Floor exists in place of both Deciduous and Rainforest terrain.
Graphical Differences
General
Different options menu. Final shows the Zoo Tycoon logo instead, with a slightly different pattern at the bottom.
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
Different way of displaying animal information.
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
The 'lose scenario' image originally featured a pride of lions attacking the guests with a nice big 'You lose!' printed on it. This was changed to a zookeeper running from a stampede of various animals in the final.
Icons
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
The early icon for build featured a zookeeper building... something. In the final, a hammer and shovel are used.
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
The building icon had a blue background and less decoration on the drink stand compared to the final.
Buildings
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
The Reptile House was changed between versions, with a chameleon now taking the center stage.
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
The Gift Shop retains the koala, but made him smaller in the final, with a different building.
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
The Petting Zoo also has a different appearance. It seems more kid-friendly in the prototype.
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
The Aviary has a different roof color, and also has an additional entrance in the prototype.
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
Most of the Compost Building was redesigned. The prototype lacks the flies buzzing around it.
Foliage
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
The Birch trees were redesigned for the final.
Terrain
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
The Concrete path icon was changed.
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
...As was the Dirt Path icon.
Cut Objects
General
In config/scenery there's mention of some removed items:
; removed 4/5/2000 jmw ;cchwemp = scenery/other/cchwemp.ai ;cchwfull = scenery/other/cchwfull.ai ;cchwmid = scenery/other/cchwmid.ai ;hchwemp = scenery/other/hchwemp.ai ;hchwfull = scenery/other/hchwfull.ai ;hchwmid = scenery/other/hchwmid.ai
Pony Ride
A Pony Ride was planned, and can be placed in this game. Unfortunately, all the icons are placeholder icons.
Sometimes guests will still comment on it, and you can still earn income from it, too.
A pony ride! I love pony rides!
Binocular Stand
This item is fully functional. Guests were also going to be able to comment on them eventually:
These binocular stands are helpful.
Items Mentioned In Text
Umbrella Table Zoo Gondolas Zoo Trains Developer Object Swinging Log Zookeeper Station Monkey Bars 2 Monkey Bars 3 Monkey Bars 4 Scratch Pole Anthill
Unused Terrain Types
Swamp, the only type of ground with a real texture.
The following can all be placed, but use the Test Texture:
- Colored Tiles
- Running Water
- Waterfall
Unused Unlockables
Found in lang9.dll.
A scratch pole toy is now available for purchase. An anthill is now available for purchase. The animal theatre is now available for purchase. Habitats do not get as dirty. A new pre-made tropical rainforest exhibit is now available for purchase. A new pre-made African savannah exhibit is now available for purchase. A new pre-made tundra exhibit is now available for purchase.
Unused Animals
Chimpmom has a single image of a chimpanzee mother. It's perhaps worth noting that the config files have four lines for each animal - m (male), f (female), y (young), and p. Since all 'p' routes are disabled, it's possible that they once stood for 'parent'.
Tritops contains images for the Triceratops. The profile image is a placeholder, using the image for the rhinoceros instead.
There's a file for btiger, but no files are present (although the Bengal Tiger is still in the game).
Text for the Yeti exists, but is not available in this prototype.
Unused Scenarios
The scenario folder has a subfolder titled 'Example'. There are four files, each made as, well, an example.
Repeated 33 times:
This is the example lose text.
Repeated 14 times:
This is the example start text.
Repeated 18 times:
This is the example win text.
In addition to this, there are several empty test folders: 4i, mstest, test1, test2, test3, test4 and test5.
Early Sounds
Ambient crowd noise.
Heard when the Family Restroom is used.
Scenario Differences
In the final, all lost scenarios have their own text for losing. In the prototype, all but one contain this string instead:
You have failed to complete scenario (x).
Likewise, instead of personalized text for completing the scenario, the prototype uses this string for all but one scenario:
Congratulations! You have succesfully completed scenario (x).
Smallsville Zoo 1
In the final, a tutorial level is used. In the prototype, it's more of an introductory level. It's not particularly useful either, since the scenario can be completed by hiring a zookeeper and creating the smallest possible enclosure. You don't even need to make sure that it's suitable for the tiger.
The town of Smallsville has been given a large monetary donation to start a new zoo. You have been hired to manage the construction and day-to-day operations. The first task is to build an exhibit, purchase a Bengal tiger, and hire a zookeeper to care for the new animal. Remember, an exhibit must be enclosed by habitat fencing. Also note the Bengal tiger is from the tropical rainforests of India. Find trees which are native to the tropical rainforest and place these in the exhibit. If you need more information, select the "info" button on the adopt animal panel while the Bengal tiger icon is selected.
If you succeed, this message is displayed.
Great Job! You now understand the basics of building exhibits and hiring staff.
And if you somehow fail, you get insulted.
I can't believe you lost this scenario. What a loser!
Save the Great Cats
Known as Saving the Great Cats in the final. The second part of the introduction is different.
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
These cats: black leopard, white Bengal tiger, snow leopard, will need to be researched under research/endangered animals.
The snow leopard is a very picky animal. |
Keep in mind that the black leopard, white Bengal tiger, and snow leopard will need to be researched under Conservation/Endangered Animals. |
Revitalize Burkitsville Zoo
Prototype | Final |
---|---|
The Burkitsville Zoo has been badly managed for the last few years. The National Association of Zoos has threatened to close down the zoo because of the substandard living conditions for the animals. The town's mayor has appointed you the new Zoo Director with the mandate to return the Zoo to its once former vibrancy.
Your first step should be to repair and upgrade the existing animal exhibits. After that, focus on increasing guest enjoyment by providing much needed services and attractions. Watch your spending, though if you get in real trouble, donations may be available. |

The town's mayor has appointed you to be the new Zoo Director, with the mandate to return the zoo to its once former success.
Your first step should be to repair and upgrade the existing animal exhibits. All of the animals are being kept in exhibits that are far too small for them. After that, focus on increasing guest enjoyment by providing much needed services and attractions. Watch your spending; though if you get in real trouble, donations may be available. |
Unused Videos
Videos BFLOGO and MSLOGO exist, but are empty files. In the final, these are the logo introductions for Blue Fan and Microsoft respectively.
Money Cheat
The Money Cheat has already been programmed (press Shift and 4 at the same time to generate $10,000). However, unlike the final game, performing this cheat will not deteriorate any of the animal fences.
Blank Translation
Folder 1028 and 1041 contain translation files, but the following is all that exists, repeating itself for a while:
PADDINGXX
Blank Folders
Folders tbreser and plus are in the ui folder, but are both empty.
Mini Map Color Changes
Some changes were made to the file. ShallowWater and DeepWater are FreshWater and SaltWater in the final.

Unused Guest Thoughts
Many of the unused guests' thoughts from the final game also go unused here. Even though some of these items are in the game, guests don't seem to comment on all of them.
This zoo is pretty nice, though it could use some improvements. This zoo is mediocre. I can take it or leave it. I'm starting to get a little ticked off. I'm really angry! I just don't like the look of this zoo. A pony ride! I love pony rides! The playground is wonderful fun! An information booth. Let's ask directions. Here's the animal hospital. This must be where they treat the really sick animals. These umbrella tables protect you from the sun's rays. Oh, the flower beds are so pretty! The water from the drinking fountain tastes good. These binocular stands are helpful. Rock gardens are one of my favorite things! Looking at this zoo map will prevent me from getting lost. An information booth. Let's ask directions. Here's the animal hospital. This must be where they take care of the really sick animals. Ooh, there's the insect house! Some insects are really bizarre looking! Eeew! The compost building smells horrible. Let's see the zoo up in the gondola! These umbrella tables keep you out of the sun. Great! I can throw my trash in the can. Oh, the flower beds are so pretty! The water at this drinking fountain tastes good. I like to sit and rest on the bench. The fountains are lovely! I wonder who sculpted these statues? They're cool! Look at the duck pond! That's neat!
