Skylanders Ring of Heroes/Planned Content

This is a sub-page of Skylanders Ring of Heroes.

Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: There are multiple binary files seemingly containing text strings within the game's files (specifically the table folder) that could potentially contain information regarding scrapped content.
Hmmm...
To do:
Look through the game's audio files for any scrapped/unused audio.

Skylanders Ring of Heroes had a lot of planned content that was ultimately scrapped due to the game's revamp, shutdown and other circumstances.

Nine

The unity3D file “Academycharacter_Nine” contains a model of a space-themed wizard character wielding a staff that, judging by the filename following the same format the other portal master charaters’ file names do, would’ve been the seventh playable portal master in the game despite their ironic name. The model itself has no textures, and only three of the standard four animations for portal master characters—an idle animation, a menu animation, and a summoning animation.

Playable Skylanders

New Skylanders

Hmmm...
To do:
Find out which version of Skylanders Ring of Heroes the characters came from and see if getting models is possible.

An early version of the game revealed models and textures for several planned Skylanders that, at the time, had not yet been added into the game. These models included the regular and Awakened forms for Boom Jet, Dune Bug, Fire Kraken, Flameslinger, Fryno, Lob-Star, Smash Hit, Torch, and Wind-Up, as well as the regular versions of Bushwhack, Ghost Roaster and Thumpback. Of these characters, Flameslinger, Smash Hit and Thumpback were all added into the game following its revamp update, but the rest of them never made it in before shutdown.

That being said, later updates of version one of the game would also sneak in character icons for regular and Awakened Fire Kraken and Lob-Star, as well as gameobjects related to their skills, and the skills of another unused Skylander, Bat Spin. In addition to a variety of effect-related objects, Fire Kraken has five skill-related gameobjects (all but the last of which have duplicates) as well as two gameobjects for his weapon, Lob-Star has four gameobjects (three of which have several duplicates) and Bat Spin has three (all of which have multiple duplicates) as well as two gameobjects for a bat.

Following the revamp, not only would Bat Spin make a cameo in promotional images for the games despite being absent in the game itself, but collection sprites would be added in for her, Boom Jet, Fire Kraken and Lob-Star, as well as five new Skylanders—Free Ranger, Fright Rider, Fist Bump, Rip Tide and Magna Charge. Free Ranger would ultimately debut in the game, but the other four would not see the light of day.

Light Jet-Vac and Shadow Spitfire

When Skylanders Ring of Heroes received its revamp update, Mysticat, Chopscotch, and all of the Light and Shadow variants save for Light Flashwing and Shadow Spyro were removed from the game. All of the missing Skylanders were slowly brought back in with later updates… With the exception of Shadow Spitfire and Light Jet-Vac. The game’s files show that there were plans to bring them back into the game, with the two of them receiving collection sprites, retaining their old skill icons, and even gaining loading screen splash art used specifically for Legendary Skylanders, suggesting they would have both been Legendaries.

Planned Bosses

New Bosses

The same early version of the game that had the various planned playable Skylanders, as mentioned above, also had texture maps for Malefor and Evilized Glumshanks. Malefor was previously confirmed as a boss via a developer’s notice that was released following the game’s beta ending, however, Evilized Glumshanks was an entirely new find.

A later update would also sneak in icons for Kaos’s emperor form from Skylanders Superchargers and his Super form from Skylanders Imaginators, as well as gameobjects for Emperor Kaos, Runys Pointyboots from Skylanders Trap Team’s 3DS port and Brock, a minor villain from Skylanders Giants. Going off of the gameobjects, Emperor Kaos had five skills as well as a bomb of some kind, Runys had three skills (one of which involved a missile of some kind) as well as casting and spawning gameobjects, and Brock had three skills as well as a shield of some kind.

Following the game’s revamp update, new boss portraits were given for all the bosses, and in addition, portraits for several unused bosses were added in the game’s files. Emperor Kaos, Super Kaos, Runys Pointyboots, Brock, and Evilized Glumshanks all got portraits, confirming their status as planned bosses. In addition, a new boss portrait was made for Bobbin Rood, another villain from Skylanders Trap Team's 3DS port, and the Evilized Leviathan from Nightfall’s Episode Dungeon in Version One, suggesting it would have made a return in Version Two. However, none of this came to pass.

New and Unused Boss Variants

SROHLeviathanMenuIcon.png

In addition to the Evilized Leviathan, a boss icon for a regular Leviathan can be found in the game's files following the revamp update, suggesting it was planned as a boss in addition to its Evilized counterpart, but it was ultimately scrapped.

The Ruins Guardian, at one point, also had separate variations for each element, much like the Elemental Destroyers and the scrapped Berserker boss. However, only the Light Element variant was used in the final game. That being said, texture maps and icons for all the unused forms can still be found in the game's files.

Planned Enemies

Gameobject files exist for what appear to be a wealth of planned enemies’ skills. These enemies include Evilized Boghogs and Snow Rollers; Spell Punks for all elements (including the Light and Dark Elements, which did not have regular enemy Spell Punks in the mainline games); Drow Archers, Spearman, Witches, and Goliath Drow; and Pint Sized Prodders, Rush Crushers, Twilight Twisters, and Witch Pitchers. In addition to the many effect-based gameobjects, the enemies also have specifically-labelled skill gameobjects, and a few have some minor textures to go with them:

  1. Evilized Boghogs have three skill-related gameobjects labelled with "Head," "Run," and "Fart," along with a single spiral texture paired with the fart attack.
  2. Evilized Snow Rollers have three skill-related gameobjects.
  3. The Spell Punks have no named skills, but most of them have either "hit" or "casting" related gameobjects. The Earth Spell Punk also has a gameobject labelled "luminouscristal," and the Fire and Magic Spell Punks have additional gameobjects labelled "bullet."
  4. Drow Archers, Spearmen and Witches have two skill-related gameobjects each, while Goliath Drow only have one.
  5. Rush Crushers, Twilight Twisters and Witch Pitchers have two skill-related gameobjects each, while Pint Sized Prodders only have one.

In addition, Evilized versions of the enemies Brawl N’ Chain, Broccoli Guy, Chomp Chest, Grave Clobber, Hood Sickle, Rage Mage, Slobber Trap, Bomb Shell, and Tussle Sprout all have gameobjects within the game's files.

Leftover Characters

Several scrapped characters from Version One and the game's beta have assets left over in Version Two of the game, though whether these were a hint at them returning or just leftover assets is uncertain:

  1. The Cyclops Queen from Drobot's Episode Dungeon, the Elemental Destroyers from the scrapped Distorted Dimensions dungeon, and Shield Shredder of the Nature from the scrapped Meditation Woodland dungeon all have gameobjects remaining in the game's files, and in addition, the Elemental Destroyers' 3D models can be found in the files as well.
  2. In a similar vein to the above, icons and texture maps for the Meditation Woodlands-exclusive "Walnut" variants of Shield Shredder, Krankenstein, Scrap Shooter, and Buzzer Beak can still be found in the game's files
  3. Icons for the Berserker from the Beta can be found, and notably shows that it has ten variations, one for each element.
  4. Mags's character model can be found in the files for version two, even though she is absent from the revamped game (in the original, she appeared in the shop).

And More!

Several other characters can be found in the games' files, but their exact purpose is unknown. Version Two of the game contains texture maps for a regular and Awakened "Dwarf" character, which, going by the presence of an Awakened form, would've been either a Skylander or perhaps an enemy with a unique stronger form akin to the cyclops enemies in the Distorted Dimensions/Cyclops Ether Fortress. In both versions of the game, about one or two skill gameobjects for characters named Bushman, Frog, Hookfish, Orc, Pawn, and Ruinrator can also be found, suggesting that again, these characters would've either been enemies or Skylanders.

Master Eon also has two alternate models in addition to the "MasterEonHead" model that is used for him in in-game cutscenes. Both models are full-body, with the first, labelled just "MasterEon", having no other accessories and a similar set of animations to the Version One avatars, while the second, labelled "MasterEonGhost", has a staff as a weapon and a similar set of animations to the Version Two playable portal masters. MasterEon first appeared in the files for Version One, and though the model was seemingly used to make certain graphics involving the character, neither it or its animations surface anywhere else; MasterEonGhost, meanwhile, appears in Version Two's files and is completely unused.

Planned Items

Light Jet-Vac & Shadow Spitfire Ethers

As mentioned above, Light Jet-Vac and Shadow Spitfire were planned to make a return after being absent from the game's initial revamp update, and in keeping with this, ether sets were made for them. Like all the Light and Shadow variants, their ethers are just recolored versions of their regular counterparts' ethers.

Rainbow/”Display” Items

Rainbow variants of several currency and Skylander growth items exist within the game’s files. These items are labeled with “Display” in their file names.

Unused Event Items

Several items for future wheel and collection events can be found in the files of Version Two as both sprites in spritesheets and as proper standalone items. The wheel event items include a background-free version of a Halloween wheel ticket used in Version One's Halloween event, as well as a suitcase-themed ticket, a tomato-themed ticket, a cogwheel-themed ticket, and a fireworks-themed ticket.

Unused collection event items include a firework, a jack-o-lantern, a tomato, a cogwheel, a Christmas ornament, and a Black Friday-themed ticket unrelated to the wheel event items.

Upper and Lower Evolution Splendors

Two yellow jars that appear to have been kinds of Evolution Splendor, based on their filenames following the same pattern as the evolution splendors.

Other Planned Content

Tidepool Episode Dungeon

Hmmm...
To do:
Get some videos of the properly-assembled Episode Dungeon Sparring Mode stages if possible.

An episode dungeon was planned for Tidepool, with banners, buttons, boss profiles, and 3D models for the sparring mode’s dungeons being developed but going unused.

Unused Loading Screens

Two unused loading screens exist in the game’s files—an “Elemental Dungeon” loading screen showcasing a forest grove filled with colorful, glowing crystals, and a “Raid” loading screen showing several Skylanders in a dark area.

Planned Translations and Server

The "RedPublic" sprite sheet, which is used for the game's various menus, shows options for Indonesian, Vietnamese, Malay, and Arabic as languages, suggesting there were plans to translate the game in those languages, as well as an option for a Chinese server, indicating there were plans to properly launch one in the future. The sprite sheet's version from Version Two specifically also includes language options for Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Turkish—all languages that were supported in Version One but dropped following the revamp. If not just leftover assets, there may have been plans to reinstate those translations in the future.

Further backing this up is that the Android port's memory contains text strings referencing split_config files used for the formatting of each translation. In addition to the eight languages that game was translated in from start to end (English, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, German, French, Thai, and Russian), it also contains the split_configs for the four dropped languages and three of the four unused languages (Arabic, Indonesian, and Vietnamese). However, there are no references to the Malay translation whatsoever, with the strings instead referencing a Polish-language translation that is not referenced anywhere else. It is possible that at one point, either a Malay- or Polish-language translation was planned but ultimately scrapped in favor of the other.

Cell Phone

SROHCellphoneModel.png

A cell phone model with gameobjects for idle and surprise animations can be found in the files. It is unknown what it would've been used for, however.

Version One-Specific

In addition to the cut content shown here, there is also a small share of content planned for Version One of the game that was ultimately scrapped due to the game's revamp making it obsolete.

Portal Master Alternate Outfits and Unused Animations

Two new outfits were planned for the Version One portal master avatars as part of Com2us’s plans to expand on the game’s character customization feature—a white and blue outfit for the girl portal master and a black and red outfit for the boy portal master—but neither were added into the game before its revamp, which removed the customizable avatars. However, they can be found in Version One's files, along with three unused animations for both avatars—a disappointed animation, a surprised animation, and a talking animation. Notably, both outfits have shown up in promotional material for the game, with the black and red outfit cropping up in several promotional posts for Version One, and the white and blue one being used in an Easter post by the now-defunct Italian Skylanders Ring of Heroes Instagram page.

Unused Items

Version One of the game also have several other unused items. These consist of a fifth episode dungeon currency, a blue and gold crystal labeled “UI_Cost_WishCrystal” (seemingly a currency item, based on its filename), a warm-colored stone labeled “UI_item_extract,” a rune enhancement item that bears a strong resemblance to the Eon's Magic Dust item from the game's revamp, and several unused rune enchantment items that resemble potion bottles, have the same colors as the rarity ranks used for the game, and are labelled with "Soul" in their filenames.
