Spark the Electric Jester/Unused Graphics

From The Cutting Room Floor
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This is a sub-page of Spark the Electric Jester.

Hmmm...
To do:
  • There are 21,781 individual graphics in the current asset dump, and it would be nearly impossible to dig through them alone, so there are definitely a ton more graphics to dig up. The sheer amount of unused graphics also means this page is probably a mess already, would be good to get it more organized. This zip has all the ripped assets.
  • A lot of the unused graphics are animated, but there's no easy way to display them in-game or check what the proper timing of the animations are. Would probably be useful to, at the very least, get attempted replication GIFs of them.
  • The page definitely just needs more fact-checking overall, I mainly just wanted to get a rough version of it out that I would refine over time because I've been sitting on these assets for ages. -Kapuccino/KapuDaKoopa

Hidden away in the executable are a large amount of unused and early graphics. Most graphics throughout development were never deleted, so everything from even the earliest demos are here.

Placeholder Graphics

STEJ DevSketchGreen.png STEJ DevSketchRed.png STEJ DevSketchYellow.png
5 pieces of very rough development art depicting Spark. It is unknown if they have any significance relating to an old plot or if they were just scratchpad drawings. The last 2 appear far later on in the sprite index than the first 3, and are simple color changes to the first 2.

STEJ D-FADE.png
A graphic possibly used to mark fades in the editor.

STEJ TitlePlaceholder.png
A replacement dummy graphic for the old Title Card object from Sonic After the Sequel which used assets from Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

STEJ WIPPause.png
A placeholder graphic for the pause menu, used in early demos.

Demo and Prototype Leftovers

STEJ oldFMgrass.png
STEJ oldFMground.png
STEJ House.png
Tiles used in early versions of FM City and FM Canyon prior the Kickstarter demo.

STEJ oldSmogwall2.png
STEJ oldSmogGround.png
Tiles used in an early version of Smog City that was only seen in screenshots and trailers prior the Kickstarter.

STEJ TutorialFloor.png
A floor tile used by the Test Stage and the tutorial stage found in old demo versions.

STEJ oldTitleBG.png
An unused mountain background, leftover from the title screen used in demo versions in 2014 and 2015.

STEJ DemoEndKickstarterPromo.png
An end-of-demo graphic, promoting the Kickstarter.

STEJ UnusedLightoria1.png
STEJ UnusedLightoria2.png
Unused tiles for Lightoria Bay that actually belong to the final version of the level, they're located in various places out of bounds below the level.

Early Pickups

STEJ ScarfAbilityPedestal.png
An early ability pedestal, from when the Wind ability was still named Scarf.

STEJ GravityGlovesAbilityPedestal.png
An early ability pedestal, from when the Gravity ability was still named the Gravity Gloves.

STEJ GravityGlovesPickup.png
Gravity Gloves pickup, meant to be paired with the ability pedestal.

STEJ EarlyHealthPickup.png
An early version of the health pickups. It's normally animated, and can be seen in early demos.

Unused Signposts

STEJ TestStageRoutez99Sign.png
A signpost referring to a test stage.

STEJ FMRangeSign.png
A signpost referring to the second stage as Flower Mountain Range, rather than Flower Mountain Canyon.

STEJ NetworkBridgeSign.png
A signpost referring to the third stage as Network Bridge, rather than Network Coast.

Chrono Adventure & After the Sequel Leftovers

Hmmm...
To do:
Not 100% on if everything from here was actually used in either fangame, or even in the files for either.

Since Spark was built off of the fangame Sonic Chrono Adventure, which was built off of Sonic After the Sequel which itself was built off Sonic Before the Sequel, there are quite a few leftover graphics from all three still remaining.

STEJ ATSCutsceneBG.png
The Background used for the Time Points results screen in Before the Sequel.

STEJ ATSLoop.png
A piece of a loop from what is most likely Horizon Heights from ATS.

STEJ ATSCaterkiller.png
Head sprite of the 'Polem' boss from Sonic Before the Sequel Aftermath.

Unused Enemy Graphics

STEJ UnknownEnemyWhite.png STEJ UnknownEnemyBlue.png
A more organic-looking version of the common Pet robot design, they're used to store values for the unused Flower Mountain Canyon boss, Razor. It also comes in multiple colors.

STEJ UnknownEnemySketch.png
A rough sketch of the above organic-looking enemy.

Spark Heads

Hmmm...
To do:
This entire section, there are legitimately SO many unique Spark head graphics for some reason.

Used as placeholders for Spark before sprites were made, these can still be seen in the final game when forcing the leftover Chrono Adventure abilities.

Captain Eyepea Portrait

STEJ EyepeaPortrait.png

The pirate captain robot (seemingly named Captain Eyepea Andresson) has a unique cutscene in early demos that was removed later on, but his portrait is still in the files.
