Splatoon 2/Unused & Unobtainable Weapons
This is a sub-page of Splatoon 2.
As to be expected, there's quite a few early and placeholder weapon models to be found throughout the development of Splatoon 2, but there's also a couple interesting surprises to be found.
Oh right, and every Splatoon sub and special weapon has some leftover code.
Unobtainable Weapons
Shooter_Enemy
The weapon slot used for Octarian enemies with the Shooter weapon type. It uses the Octoshot as a placeholder model.
Spinner_Enemy
The weapon slot used for the Octocommander enemy in story mode. It uses the Heavy Splatling as a placeholder model.
Charger_Enemy
The weapon slot used for the Octosniper enemy in story mode. It uses the Hero Charger as a placeholder model.
Roller_Enemy
The weapon slot used for the Octo Samurai boss in story mode. It uses the Gold Dynamo Roller as a placeholder model.
Shooter_amiibo_00
The original Splattershot used by the Inkling Girl and Inkling Boy amiibo in-game. It has no parameters, so when used it shoots nothing. The Note field in the weapon database, when translated, reads "When an amiibo is loaded, display weapon model".
Shooter_amiibo_01
The original Tentatek Splattershot used by the recolored Inkling Girl and Inkling Boy amiibo in-game. It has no parameters, so when used it shoots nothing. The Note field in the weapon database, when translated, reads "When an amiibo is loaded, display weapon model".
Early Weapon Designs
Main Weapons
Tenta Brella
The Tenta Brella has an early model in 1.1.0, looking more simplistic and being blue instead of green on the static-color areas.
Explosher
The Explosher and Custom Explosher have early models in 3.0.0. While the Custom looks fairly close to the final version, the base Explosher is an earlier mesh, looking noticeably smaller compared to the final.
Ballpoint Splatling
The Ballpoint Splatling has an early model in 3.0.0, looking heavily work-in-progress. The Ballpoint Splatling Nouveau didn't have a unique texture at this point, and instead changes its color through a material parameter.
The final Ballpoint Splatling model also has a slightly different texture for the Ballpoint Splatling Nouveau.
Kensa Luna Blaster
The Kensa Luna Blaster has an early model in its archive, which lacks the tag and has the text on the sides split across the two sides.
Grizzco Brella
The Grizzco Brella has an early model in 1.0.0, lacking a lot of the extra details of the final version.
Sub Weapons
Fizzy Bomb
The Fizzy Bomb has an early model in 3.1.0, looking a lot more basic. The top and bottom of the can has a bird, poking fun at the weapon's codename, Piyo, which is both a common Japanese placeholder name and the Japanese onomatopoeia for a bird's chirp.
Unused Weapons
Dual Squelcher
While it was replaced by the Dualie Squelchers in the final game, there still exists a model and weapon parameters for the original Dual Squelcher within the files. It never had any weapon database entry in retail builds, but it did in the Testfire.
Sub Weapons
Seeker
Despite being the only real removed sub weapon, it still has a lot left over in Splatoon 2, even having models in the Testfire. The reason for this is that it was intended to be used in story mode and Salmon Run. It still has an entry in the sub weapon database, even in the latest versions, however it is nonfunctional without manual fixing. It calls for the Curling Bomb model in retail builds, and still has sound effects.
Disruptor
Despite being replaced by Toxic Mist, the Disruptor still remains in the sub weapon database, even in the latest versions. It is nonfunctional without manual fixing, but most of the code still remains. It calls for the Toxic Mist model in retail builds.
Special Weapons
VictoryRocket
The 'objective weapon' of the scrapped Rocket gamemode. It's meant to be a rocket nozzle, but used the Sting Ray as a placeholder model.
Bomb Rush
Even though it was replaced by Bomb Launcher, the Splatoon version of the special still functions perfectly, grabbing from the sub weapon exactly as intended and lacking the 1-second sub weapon prevention (to prevent wasting ink) at the end of the duration that the Bomb Launcher has. The only apparent problem is lack of UI pop-ups.
Bubbler
Even though it was replaced by Ink Armor, the Splatoon version of the special still functions to an extent. While the invincibility aspect works perfectly (without any visual indication), you seem to be unable to share the bubble with other players.
Echolocator
Due to the Point Sensor sub weapon using the same tracking effect, the Echolocator still functions to an extent. It strangely seems to only track bots and completely ignores real players, but other than that works perfectly.
Inkstrike
Almost completely nonfunctional. It slows down the player like intended, but you're unable to do anything beyond that until the special meter runs out.
Inkzooka
Entirely nonfunctional, it crashes the game upon activation.
Killer Wail
The only Splatoon special weapon to come back officially, in the form of the Princess Cannon. Prior to 4.9.0, there was an updated version of the original Killer Wail model in the files that was replaced by the Princess Cannon.
Kraken
Almost completely nonfunctional. The camera shifts to below the stage and you can move around but not much else.
BigBang
Found as a WeaponBullet parameter file, but not mentioned anywhere else. It's unknown what this weapon was, but it was likely a special or something related to a gamemode.
