id Software[1] This game has unused models. |
This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion. Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article? |
Starfield is the first new intellectual property from Bethesda since the Elder Scrolls; 25 years ago. Hopefully, it'll been worth the weight... management.

Unused Weapons
Combatech Flamethrower
A set of meshes for a flamethrower can be found in the game's Meshes01.ba2 archive, including mods for its 'magazine', its muzzle and 'additive accelerant'. The flamethrower appears on a combat magazine in game for the weapons manufacturer Combatech, but it is not obtainable in the game whatsoever.
Cut companion
There are remnants of a cut major companion character named Azami in the game's texture and mesh archives. outfit_azami
appears to be a set of texture assets for their outfit. Though there is no model, morph data for it is still present. Additionally, an untextured model called commitmentgift_azami
can be found. The presence of a commitment gift for this character indicates that they were intended to be a Constellation companion, alongside Sarah, Barrett, Andreja, and Sam.
Curiously, there is an unused decal in the game named azami01
that is a poster depicting a woman with fibre optic hair, with the name "Azami Zarin" appearing in a stylized font. It is not clear if the person depicted on the poster is supposed to reflect the same character.
Traits
Icons for two unused traits can be found in the game's files: Monogamous, and Polyamorous. There is no data for these traits whatsoever beyond the icons for them.
Skills
Two unused skills exist in the game: Mindfulness (Physical) and Textiles (Science).
Skill | Description | Rank description | Progression |
---|---|---|---|
Mindfulness | EM damage can wreak havoc on synaptic pathways, leading to unconsciousness, but it's possible for a trained mind to withstand those effects. |
|
|
Textiles | Access to new materials, creative design, and advancements in manufacturing allow one to create clothing that is the pinnacle of both form and function. |
|
|
Additionally, patch icons for each rank of the Textiles skill exist in the game's texture archives. The icons for Mindfulness were entirely repurposed for the Cellular Regeneration skill.
Magazines
Several planned magazines didn't make the cut. Additionally, some of the magazines that are included in the game have alternate covers that go unused.
Unused Covers
Constellation Spacefarer's Guide has two covers that go unused. These are possibly early versions of covers, as they feature basic renders of objects in the game, and another cover also labelled "The Art Behind the Sciences" is used for that issue.
All five issues of Tracker's Primer use the cover for Issue 5 due to an oversight. Each issue was supposed to have its own unique cover (oddly, most the filenames for these textures are numbered in the wrong sequence).
Colonization Guide
NASA's Colonization Guide would have unlocked new outpost features with each issue collected. It appears to be the originally intended way for the player to unlock buildable objects and features. This was presumably changed to make the outpost building feature more accessible to players.
Oddly, the cover texture for this magazine is sorted into its own subfolder. This also occurs with the texture for Kryx's Journal. Generally, only the magazines with multiple covers have subfolders, so it may be that Bethesda had intended for each issue of these two magazines to have unique covers.
Enhance! Your Life!
This magazine would have unlocked special character parts that could be applied when having a makeover at Enhance!, all of which were to have a cyberpunk aesthetic. Presumably, each part would have resembled its depiction on the issue cover. No trace of any of them exist in the game's files, so it's likely that Bethesda never actually got around to making them.
Experimental Starship Schematic
These schematics would have unlocked special ship parts, which each one unlocking a different part in each category. It's unknown if the intended parts were repurposed, or simply never created in the first place.
This magazine was planned to reveal a secret points of interest to the player with each issue collected. The game does feature some unmarked locations (see below), though it's not certain if they are simply oversights, or were originally intended to be one of the secret points of interest revealed by this magazine.
Oddities
Snow Globes
Two of the snow globes that exist in the game, the Cydonia Snow Globe and the Tower of Pisa Snow Globe, have no books or quests that lead the player to their location. The only way to find them is to land at the approximate location of the Face of Mars and the Tower of Pisa, respectively, and to manually find them. Oddly, they are also not tracked by the game as being part of the full snow globe collection.
ECS Constant Shuttle Crash Site
The wreck of a ship called the "ECS Constant Shuttle" can be found on Bardeen I. The marker for this location cannot be scanned from orbit or with the scanner, so the player can only find it if they happen to land in the precise region in which it is located and manually approach it. At the wreck is a single UC Marine wearing an ECS Officer Uniform. Inside the only things of note are a random spacesuit and a single Terrabrew cup.
Presumably it is meant to be a small shuttle that had launched from the ECS Constant ship, but there is absolutely no reference to it within the game. Several scene markers are present in the interior of the ship, suggesting a scrapped quest may have been intended to take place here.
An unused note ECS_Book_CrashedLandingShip
exists that sheds some light on how the crash may have occurred:
- [These notes are hastily written, flowing inconsistently from one thought to the next, and borderline panicked]
- What have I done? I'm the only one here now. I don't know where I'm going. I don't know how to land a ship! I can barely fly it! What was I thinking? I can't even find my way back if I wanted to. Why did I think taking the only landing craft was a good idea?
- Please.
- Please take pity on me. Did I doom the Constant? I've doomed the entire human race in my momentary panic. It wasn't so bad. I'd give anything to be back on board the Constant. Please. God? If you're there? Heck, I'll take aliens at this point. I don't care. I deserve anything that happens to me now. Just... don't let everyone else pay for my stupidity. Please. If anyone ever finds this... I'm so so sorry. I'm the worst.
- Please forgive me.
