Super Mario Galaxy 2/Unused Stages

This is a sub-page of Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Like the first game, Super Mario Galaxy 2 features a handful of stages that are not used in the final game. All of these are zones, smaller level chunks of bigger galaxies. There are also a lot of references to removed stages in the game's files, but these are detailed on a separate page.

ChaosStartZone

ChaosStartZone belongs to Upside-Dizzy Galaxy. Unlike the other two unused zones, this one is placed in the actual galaxy and can be found below the first interior section. The name implies that it was meant to be the starting section of the galaxy. It is fairly empty and only consists of a spherical atmosphere object (SphereAir) and planar gravity, indicating that it was cut early in development.

EarthenPipeRoomEZone

EarthenPipeRoomEZone is a variant of the flat bonus rooms that features three Question Blocks containing 10 Coins each. It is listed among the zones from Sky Station Galaxy but is not placed in the actual galaxy. It might have been cut in favor of the teleporter challenge.

StaffUnbabaHomePlanetZone

StaffUnbabaHomePlanetZone is a copy of Melty Monster Galaxy's final zone. It has an entry in the Staff Roll's zones list, indicating that it was meant to appear during the game's credits sequence. Ironically, it does not feature any of the titular Blarggs (Unbaba) that can be found in the original zone. Yet, all planets, paths and areas are intact. The camera is locked at a fixed position, just like other sections from the credits sequence. It is still possible to access the other planets, even though they are out of sight. It might have been cut to prevent the player from dying to lava during the credits. However, it does not seem to be possible to take damage by the lava anyway since the planet is too far away.
