"None of the sprite palettes match the pipes, which may be why this wasn't used."
Couldn't they have just used the appropriate background palette, though? I've read online that sprites on the NES could use any of the sprite or background palettes, and I've even heard that this is why the Goombas in Super Mario Bros. change colour in underground levels, since they use the same palette as the ground tiles. --Murnjendoof (talk) 08:18, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
- No. The NES can have 4 background palettes and 4 sprite palettes loaded at one time. Sprites cannot use the background palettes, and the other way around. In Super Mario Bros., one sprite palette is essentially a duplicate of one of the background palettes most of the time. This is so blocks still use the correct palette when they bounce or shatter. Goombas share this palette with those block effects, which is why they change color in underground areas. --Mattrizzle (talk) 11:45, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
- Alright, that makes sense. Thanks for clearing that up for me! --Murnjendoof (talk) 20:03, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
