Some quest and dialog findings from .ltb files in data.pak and shantae_common.pak

Unfortunately I don't have the kind of free time to work on this very much, so in case I never get around to it, basic summary here:

Give the Data Chip to the Techno Baron to get a Risky clue

data.pak\metaquestflags.ltb has a completely unused flag called Ch6_GaveWormsToTechnoBaron; in the final game he requests a data chip containing his financial information, and the Techno Baron himself is located in Scuttle Town during chapter 6.

A single leftover dialogue marker remains from this version of the quest. Speaking to Techno Baron while having "not enough" of the Data Chip in your inventory would produce the message "Lies! You don't have my <hgh_f c=0>DATA CHIP</hgh_f>!", but the Data Chip is a single item, not a multiple, so it's not possible to make this line appear (if you don't have any of a quest item in your inventory, the dialogue just doesn't display the 'give' prompt at all). In all other cases of a singular quest item, there is no line for "not enough".

Give the Doctor Sick in exchange for Lollipop

data.pak\metaquestflags.ltb and the quest flags in shantae_common.pak\shantae_dialog.ltb refer to this quest as Ch5_GaveOrangesToDr. Oranges are a consumable item. It was presumably replaced when someone came up with the whole "You got Sick!" joke.

Unlike Techno Baron's worms, no "not enough" line exists in the dialogue files despite "Oranges" implying that more than one was needed.

Get Vorpal Blade from Adventurer

In the game files, the metaquest flag Ch6_GaveRoastsToAdventurer is turned on immediately before the Adventurer gives the player the Vorpal Blade, but in the final game, he gives you the blade for free. Roasts are consumable items in this game.

Get the Zombie Hamster from Poe

According to the flag in data.pak\metaquestflags.ltb, text and flag references in shantae_common.pak\shantae_dialog.ltb, and an unused quest item, the player would originally have needed to obtain a vinyl record called "Siren's Song" and trade it to Poe for his zombie hamster.

I wonder if <hgh_f c=0>SHE</hgh_f>’s out there somewhere...

(Sigh.) What's up?

(SIGH.)

Poe, you should listen to music!

What ‘cha got?

Just close your eyes and listen...

Woahhhhh...

That <hgh_f c=0>VOICE</hgh_f>...

That’s the sound my heart makes when I think about <hgh_f c=0>HER</hgh_f>.

She’s out there.

Someday I’m going to meet the girl who sang this.

I feel it in my heart.

...

Thank you.

Hey wait. I want to give you something.

He’s kind of a wiggly monster, but he needs a good home.

Unfortunately, any other text that referenced HER was overwritten by the final game's conversation, so we may never know who SHE was meant to be.

TODO: add the record item icon from global.pak and the item name and description from wherever that is.

MaidenMaze

This sidequest was cut from the game entirely, but has remnants lying around in the files.

In data.pak\metaquestflags.ltb

Ch5_TalkedToMaidenMaze

Ch5_GaveWormsToMaidenMaze

In shantae_common.pak\shantae_dialog.ltb

Eeeeyaaaaah!!

ICKY ICKY ICK!

I can’t bathe in the relaxing waterfalls — 'cause of <hgh_f c=0>ALL THESE WORMS</hgh_f>!

They’re in the walls and there’s no <hgh_f c=0>END</hgh_f> to them!

Well, okay... There can’t be more than a few...

But someone has to do something about these disgusting <hgh_f c=0>WORMS</hgh_f>!

Oh please, can you get rid of them for me?

I can't relax until the <hgh_f c=0>WORMS</hgh_f> are all <hgh_f c=0>GONE</hgh_f>!

Is it true?

Are the worms gone?

Icky <hgh_f c=0>WORMS</hgh_f>! Please make those vile things <hgh_f c=0>GONE</hgh_f>!

I-I'm afraid you've missed a few... Oh please, take care of those icky <hgh_f c=0>WORMS</hgh_f>!

All gone? ... All gone!

Yippeeee!!

I can't stop wiggling in excitement! Please take this as a gift.

Ahh... thanks to you... It's time to enjoy a nice dip, worm freeee!

Gosh, the only thing that would have been worse than finding worms in the wall is finding mice. Imagine that?

Note that "Maiden" is the internal name for the panicking wriggly ladies from chapter 2. "Maze" most likely refers to the zoomed-in tiny passages that the Mouse form is required to navigate; "worms" refers to the only monster that can be encountered in those areas. Based on the dialogue, she was most likely located somewhere in Mermaid Falls, which has numerous waterfalls and a lot of mouse mazes in it, several of which lead to absolutely nothing. TODO: Do any remnants of this sidequest exist in the map files? I haven't found anything but I haven't gotten into the file formats.

The dialogue file's text events and arguments sections indicate that the reward for completing this quest was a Museum Key. Based on the lack of any associated item information for Worms despite two unused quests referencing them, it may have been a "kill # of this enemy" quest; in the final game, the only such quest that exists is getting the Health Permit for the Chef on Main Street by killing 30 of the tinkerbats invading her restaurant. The 30th monster defeated actually physically drops the health permit item, so it's possible this quest was cut because Shantae can't pick up items while moving through mouse mazes.

Risky Item Quest Placeholder Lines

Immediately after Mimic, discussing whether to go after Risky right away or find evidence first, says "The CHOICE is yours", two unused lines appear in the dialogue.

Temp line until quest gets updated in programming. Temp line until quest gets updated in programming.

The first of these two lines is marked as a two-option choice by its text event. Neither one has a portrait attached to it.

Unused Risky outtro line

Between "FOOL!!" and "BLASTED NO GOOD!!" (spoken when Risky starts ranting about how you ruined her plan), an additional line goes unused because it doesn't have the character text event associated with actually playing text.

STUPIDA!!

An alternate version is in the file area that normally contains items gained, quest flags updated, and suchlike.

IDIOTE !!

This might have been used as scratch space by the translators.

Bath Lady - item shop?

Two lines of dialogue present before the Bath Lady's hint text suggest that she once had a very different function.

Markers:

SHOPKEEP_BATH_LADY

SHOPKEEP_BATH_LADY_POST

Dialogue:

As you relax by our herbal spring, allow me to interest you in some products!

Good luck on your travels!

Unused townsfolk line

The little girl in Scuttle Town Square has a line that never plays; based on markers and position in the file, it's meant to play when you talk to her during Chapter 3, but she spends the entirety of Chapter 3 in Sky's hatchery due to the salted caramel and birdseed quest.

The wiggly girl is gone. But now I kind of miss her. Maybe we can visit where she is from again.

The fate of the Gallery Keys

When the Mayor tells you to go look for the gallery keys, he says he lost them during his travels. Unused versions of the text exist in the files.

How terrible! We just got the ART GALLERY reopened and all the keys got stolen! Since you're out a job, how about you go find them for me?

Wh... where am I?

Don't mind me here. Just doing mayor stuff. Very busy.

Oh, are you still looking for the keys? I lost them in— I mean, whoever STOLE them must have hid them in many places!

If you've found any Gallery Keys, go ahead and press UP to open a door!

Unused Mimic text:

We'll modify the <hgh_f c=0>MAGIC MAGNET</hgh_f> for long range while you search for that <hgh_f c=0>THUNDER ORE</hgh_f>!

This is Mimic's Chapter 6 dialogue according to the markers. It seems that the Dynamo originally had a very different quest progression, not to mention different item names.

Unfortunately I don't have time to deal with this stuff right now but anyone can pick up where I left off (and maybe actually figure out how to organize the files contents automatically because the manual lining up is just eugh.) --YourBuddyBill (talk) 20:18, 14 August 2020 (UTC)

Phew.

Good thing a certain user from the Shantae Wiki that I hated severely (mainly because they made an admin there block me for no good reasons when I was only trying to fix the wiki's pages) didn't think about making an account on this wiki and trying to "fix" each of the four featured Shantae games' pages (actually make them more vague and less reliable) including this one. So yeah, I'm glad that didn't happen. SafariKid2 (talk) 21:42, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
