Unused Checkpoints

None of the checkpoints in the video are actually in any released version of the game; in fact, there aren't very many unused areas in the officially released versions.

A bit unrelated, but I think I should also mention that Smash Hit's level system is a bit complex. First there are levels (or as they are normally called "checkpoints"), then the levels each have individual rooms, then these rooms generally have segments that are just small parts of a room that can be put in any order (except for in some really early versions of the game where the room is the level).

The complex thing is that while there are technically unused checkpoints in the released game, they only contain rooms from checkpoints in the game (there is an exception, see examples). While there are unused rooms in the game, they do not appear in any of the final levels, and while there are unused segments, they do not appear in any of the rooms or levels.

Examples:

  • levels/trailer.xml is unused, but it the unused room it uses is not included in the current version of the game (Note: it is in 1.0.0)
  • rooms/holodeck/bonus_old.lua is unused, but it will never appear in a checkpoint.
  • segments/basic/score.xml is an unused segment that will never appear in a room or level.

So should unused segments be documented at all? If so, then what would be the best way to go about it?
