Oh dear, I do believe I have the vapors.

Such as: Lots of gore.

The Song of Saya is a visual novel written by well-known Japanese writer Gen Urobuchi. Its contents are based upon the writer's thoughts during a dark period of his life, which is... quite apparent when playing. Themes of loneliness and friendship are prevalent, but so are sexual depravity, hopelessness, and cannibalism, among others.

Hmmm...
To do:
Some things to keep in mind:
  • The in-game portraits are cut off at the midriff, but the manual (and other places) shows these sprites in full. Maybe compare the two or re-check if these sprites can't be found in full?
  • Yoh's portrait on the game's site features an earring that her final portrait lacks.
  • Compare versions for differences. The "Eroge" parts are skipped/removed in the censored version, at the very least.

Unused/Changed CGs

Present in the game's files are some notable CGs that differ from the ones used in-game.

Yoh at School

Yoh waiting for Fuminori during a lecture at the start of the game. The version used in the original game features much brighter colors. The revised localized version uses a much less saturated image instead.

There's a third variation that goes completely unused. It's the same as the less-saturated image, except it includes another girl in the back, seemingly just another random student. Why exactly this image goes unused is unknown.

Fuminori in Bed

A pretty infamous image of main character Fuminori in bed, the way he sees it: being surrounded by blood, guts, and gore. In the files is a version showing the "normal" world, possibly as a base for the 3D artists to help them with their work.

Used Unused

Saya at the Hospital

The first time Fuminori lays eyes on the titular Saya, she's standing over his hospital bed. The unused version of this image, aside from lacking (most of) the gory aspects, seems to clearly depict lines that are meant to aid the 3D artists.

Used Unused

Saya through the eyes of Yosuke

At one point, Saya makes Fuminori's neighbor, Yosuke, view the world the same as he does. This means he now sees ordinary things as disgusting meat versions. Yosuke sees Saya standing in front of his neighbor's house, but there's also another version that shows the "normal" world that goes unused. The bloom on Saya also differs between images.

Saya at Fuminori's

After returning from the hospital, Fuminori finds Saya huddled up on his bed. Once again, a "normal world" version of this image goes unused.

Oddities

  • Yoh's portrait includes what appears to be a zipper on her top, despite said top appearing to be a shirt/blouse. The CGs don't ever show this.
  • Omi's portrait has her with a bob hairstyle, whereas the CGs depict her with long hair and bangs in front, while short at the back.
