Unbirth: Envy The Dead (or simply Unbirth) was a cancelled horror game lead by Frictional Games' co-founder Thomas Grip, which started development somewhere in 2001. Though the plot (found mainly through unimplemented notes inside the game's files) is rather vague, you were meant to play as a person named Alex who was to find out what happened to his daughter and wife. Production on the game halted by 2004, resulting in the team moving on to creating Penumbra's Tech Demo (which happened to use a lot of Unbirth's assets).
A playable late demo of the game (although not the final build) was released by Grip himself on GamersHell and GamesUpdate in 2008, but they eventually went down alongside Frictional's page for the project. Most of the maps don't have any transitions to other levels, or crash the game when trying to load.
Unused Music
To do:
|
Inside the music folder found within Unbirth's main directory are tracks that never play in the demo. Metadata for these tracks are empty, which makes it difficult to know who composed it.
barn
No Barn level exists in the demo. From the sounds of it, it could be also a track meant in place of pain.mp3, which is used in the Craddle room.
hybrid
Hybrid does appear in the aitest2 level, but this track accompanying it never plays. It's also rather long for a loopable enemy theme.
otherside2
Meant for the "Otherside" set of rooms, or a second Otherside level which is not present in the demo. "Otherside" levels play hell.mp3 instead.
wife
Wife was one of the enemies planned for Unbirth. While she wasn't implemented in this build, her theme exists.
