Introduction

This is the copy protection used in Super Mario Galaxy, among others. The protection is targeted to those who played a backup of Super Mario Galaxy or any game with the same protection as SMG on hardmodded Wiis prior to new modchip updates. This is notable when SMG was leaked online before the game was released.

How it works

The game does not check the DVD drive if there is a modchip installed, rather, the game checks the size of the data on the inserted disc and compares it to the one on a legitimate copy and makes sure if the correct responses come back from the disc. The size of a legitimate Wii game disc is different than a DVD-R. If this check fails, the game will return Error #001.

Error #001,
unauthorized device has been detected.

Newer modchips, however simulate the correct responses allowing the game to boot correctly.
