Day of the Tentacle/Unused Dialogue
This is a sub-page of Day of the Tentacle.
This game has a pretty huge amount of unused dialogue. It ranges from dialogue of characters doing things with objects they can never possess which can easily be triggered in debug mode, to dialogue that doesn't even exist in the scripts anymore with no clear use at all. Some more unused dialogue is listed on the main page and the Unused Scripts page, where appropriate.
This page is split into several categories to hopefully make it a bit easier to digest.
All offsets are relative to the file monster.sou. The subtitle of each piece of dialogue is taken from the game's files, with the notable exception of the Unused Dialogue with no subtitles section.

Unused Object Dialogue
Dialogue intended to play while doing specific interactions with specific inventory objects in the game.
Brush
All three playable characters have dialogue for using the Brush with the Bucket. However, there is no way for Bernard or Laverne to get the Bucket.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0181D49F | Bernard | What for? | |
0x0182D47D | Laverne | Ha! |
Disappearing Ink
All three playable characters have dialogue for using the Disappearing Ink with the Hamster. However, there is no way for Hoagie to get the Hamster.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x09EACC11 | Hoagie | Hamsters have no sense of humor. Everyone knows that. |
Crowbar
All three playable characters have dialogue for using the Crowbar with any other object. However, there is no way for Hoagie or Laverne to get the Crowbar.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x06229021 | Hoagie | I'm not so sure that's a good idea. | |
0x0621A2AC | Laverne | I'm not so sure that's a good idea. |
Extension Cord
All three playable characters have dialogue for pushing the Extension Cord. However, there is no way for Hoagie or Bernard to get the Extension Cord.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0E448DCD | Hoagie | Whoa. | |
0x0E370217 | Bernard | Hmmm... |
Flag
Dialogue for using the Flag with the Chron-O-John. However, the Flag is set to not be usable with any objects. This is used in Day of the Tentacle Remastered.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0D57C9CC | Laverne | This would clog it up. |
Unused Room Dialogue
Lots of dialogue intended to play while doing specific interactions in specific rooms of the game.
Field
Ben Franklin has more dialogue chastising Hoagie for failing to push the Kite at the correct time, but it never plays. The used line is "What part of the word "NOW" didn't you understand?"
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x008C33F5 | Ben Franklin | Why didn't you wait for me to say "NOW"? |
Dialogue for interacting with the Kite or Kite Pocket. These objects are only seen during the Kite pushing sequence, which overrides almost any interaction except pushing the Kite with a short cutscene of Hoagie failing to push the Kite.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x006D6E73 | Hoagie | That's the thing I'm supposed to push, I think. | |
0x006E5AEA | Hoagie | It's the breast pocket from the lab coat. |
Main Hall (past)
Dialogue that only be triggered by attempting to pick up a hidden copy of the Smoke Detector object. You never need to pick up the Smoke Detector in the game, so it's hard to imagine what this was intended for.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0EC92DA8 | Hoagie | I guess I would have to start a fire to do that. |
Dialogue for interacting with the Fire. The Fire object is set to the wrong state, so trying to do anything but look at the Fire will result in Hoagie looking to the right and saying "I can't reach it." This can be fixed in ScummVM by running the command 'object 91 state 1' after Thomas Jefferson builds the fire.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0ECCD062 | Hoagie | No. Fire bad. |
Dialogue that should play when using the Disappearing Ink on George Washington, but immediately gets interrupted by Hoagie saying "Excuse me."
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0EC1FAE9 | Hoagie | I got something funny to show ya. |
Dialogue for using the Cigar on George Washington after he's already smoked a Cigar. This impossible as the Cigar object is removed from your inventory as soon as he smokes the first one, and there's no way to obtain another.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0EC02409 | Hoagie | I don't think he'll fall for that again! |
George Washington's Room
There is some odd dialogue set up on the maid. No object or verb seems to trigger this response.
UPDATE: This could be some unused dialogue for when Hoagie tries to squirt disappearing ink on the maid, but in the final game he just says "No way!" (Reusing a badly cropped voice clip).
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x01EEF499 | Hoagie | She's a broad target, but she's movin' fast. |
Ned and Jed's Room
Hoagie has some unused dialogue for interacting with Ned or Jed Edison. This dialogue appears to be fully set-up in the script, but no object or verb seems to trigger it. The second bit of dialogue would depend on who is currently working on the statue.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x028F95DF | Hoagie | You some kind of artist? | |
0x02C2443B | Ned or Jed | What does it look like, nitwit? Oh, sorry about that... I'm trying to cultivate my artistic temperament. | |
0x02B37060 | Jed or Ned | Only time will tell... |
Attic (past)
Dialogue for interacting with the Squeaky Mattress after Hoagie has already moved it from Ned's Bed over to Jed's Bed. This line is actually set up to be triggered on an item called Ned's Squeaky Mattress, which is hidden as soon as the mattress-moving cutscene is over.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x02EE6012 | Hoagie | No way. I'm not doing that again. |
Roof (past)
Dialogue intended for using any object (except the Blanket) on the Chimney, which seems to be overridden by each object's own default invalid interaction response.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x03086BFA | Hoagie | That would be lame. |
Lobby (present)
Dialogue for looking at the Dark Passage inside the Grandfather Clock that leads to the Secret Lab before Bernard knows what's in there. A script forces Bernard to go through the passage into the Secret Lab as soon as it's opened, which replaces the dialogue with "Something tells me it leads to the lab."
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0680F314 | Bernard | Hmmm... I wonder where it leads to... |
Office
Dialogue for trying to pick up the Contract when the Safe is closed, while Dr. Fred is opening and closing the safe. The timing involved makes this an impossible task.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0AFD91BB | Bernard | I can't get the contract. |
Dialogue for looking at the Safe when it's open. However, this line never plays because there are actually 2 copies of the Safe object. The Safe object that can actually be opened by the player uses the lines "It's empty." and "There's a contract in it." instead.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0B05F3D1 | Bernard | The safe is open. |
Dialogue for using some object on Dr. Fred. No object or verb seems to trigger this response, but it seems most likely to have been intended for the Shrunken Sweater. It's stored right next to the dialogue for using the regular Sweater on him.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0B1E4D90 | Bernard | It's not exactly his size. |
Convention Hall
Dialogue intended to be triggered when looking at the Vat of Teeth while the chattering teeth are still in it. This is impossible as getting anywhere near the Vat of Teeth causes the Chattering Teeth to escape before the line can be spoken.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x03406F7B | Bernard | They look dangerous! |
Parking Lot
Dialogue for using the Keys on the Car which seems to be interrupted by another script which makes Bernard say "It's not my car."
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x07F93759 | Bernard | There are too many keys here. I don't know which one to use. |
Secret Lab (present)
Dialogue for using Coffee or Decaf Coffee on the Mug which Dr. Fred drops and smashes after filling it with Decaf Coffee. This is impossible as the Mug object is hidden after you first pour Decaf Coffee into it.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x03F65714 | Bernard | It's already full. |
Dialogue that would play if you attempt to pour Coffee into the funnel in Dr. Fred's mouth after you've already poured Coffee into the Funnel in his mouth. This is impossible as the Funnel object is hidden after you first pour Coffee into it.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x047697C | Bernard | It looks like he has plenty of coffee already. |
Copy Protection
Bernard and Dr. Fred have some lines about how the Battery Plans need to be corrected. These lines are part of the copy protection script used in the original floppy disk version of the game. Which is kinda funny because that version of the game doesn't even use recorded dialogue past the very beginning of the game, so these are never used anywhere. You can force the copy protection script to run in ScummVM by running Script 203 while looking at the Battery Plans (Room 65).
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0F7773D3 | Dr. Fred | Drat! This will never work! I forgot I never quite got these proportions correct. | |
0x0F764DD1 | Bernard | Maybe I can help. I got an "A" in physics class. | |
0x0F795C95 | Dr. Fred | Say, that looks pretty good! |
Laundry Room (present)
Dialogue intended for using some object on the Dryer. No object or verb seems to trigger this response, and it's a bit too vague to really imagine what this might have been intended for.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x047697C | Bernard | It's already pretty dry. |
Honeymoon Suite
Dialogue for interacting with the Sleeping Conventioneer (while he's on the floor), which doesn't seem to trigger when using any object or verb with him. It's possible that it was intended for the Disappearing Ink, as using that on him makes nothing happen at all rather than the default "Not funny enough." response.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x07FE149D | Bernard | Oh, it's just not the same, somehow. |
Green Tentacle's Room
The three-headed creature you play as during the finale has some dialogue for pushing the Speaker over when revisiting Green Tentacle's Room, but it seems to be overridden by the line "No time for that now."
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0999F6B4 | Hoagvernard | I wouldn't want to break it before tomorrow. |
Weird Ed's Room
All three playable characters have dialogue for using the Maniac Mansion Computer. Unfortunately, there is no way for Hoagie or Laverne to get to the computer.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0E3E4547 | Laverne | Wow! | |
0x0E44D2B9 | Hoagie | Gnarly! |
Attic (present)
Dialogue for using the Rope on Dr. Fred while it's not in the player's inventory. This is impossible as the Dr. Fred object only becomes unhidden once the rope has been picked up.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0948247E | Bernard | He's already pretty tied up with it. |
Dialogue for trying to swap Dr. Fred with Ted once the puzzle in the attic is already solved. This is impossible as the moveable Dr. Fred/Ted objects are all hidden once the puzzle is solved.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x09495EE5 | Bernard | He looks comfortable where he is. |
Laundry Room (future)
Dialogue for using the Sweater (while it's not shrunken) in the Dryer (in the future) on the Cold Wet Hamster as Bernard. There is no way for Bernard to interact with either of these objects in these states.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0D761641 | Bernard | It's way too big for him. |
Kitchen (future)
Dialogue for trying to use the Hub Cap in the Recyclatron when it's not in the player's inventory.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0B5161CA | Laverne | I can't do that. |
Dialogue intended for using any object (except metal objects/the Hamster) on the Microwave, which seems to be overridden by each object's own default invalid interaction response.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0B4BFAC4 | Laverne | Maybe that isn't such a hot idea. |
Seventies Room
Dialogue for using some object on the Ted (the Mummy). No object or verb seems to trigger this response, but it seems most likely to have been intended for the Sweater.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0A71FE2E | Laverne | It's not quite his size. |
Roof (future)
Dialogue for interacting with the crank and/or crankbox, which doesn't seem to trigger when using any object or verb with either of them.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0D502F96 | Laverne | What it needs is a crank. |
Dialogue for doing an unknown interaction with the crank once it's "stuck". The first line would play if you're wearing the Tentacle Costume, otherwise the second line would play. These both seem to be overridden by the "It's stuck." line.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0D4C0803 | Laverne | No, I mean it's really STUCK. Like adventure-game stuck. | |
0x0D4DA30D | Laverne | Maybe I should just use my hands, delicate and valuable as they are. |
Human Show
Dialogue that would play if you attempt to use the Fork on the Mummy's Head after you've already styled his hair. This is impossible as the Mummy's Head object is hidden after you first use the Fork on it.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0D0B3DB0 | Laverne | No, I might hurt him. |
Secret Lab (future)
Dialogue for using the Hamster while on the Generator while the Hamster is in its default state. This is impossible as the only way to get it to Laverne is to freeze it. Then put it in a Microwave. Then give it a teeny tiny Sweater.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0CB9DE69 | Laverne | No. |
Dialogue for interacting with the Hamster while it's running on the Generator. This is impossible as the Hamster object becomes hidden as soon as the Generator starts up.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0CC7A305 | Laverne | Not while he's working. | |
0x0CC82E8F | Laverne | I don't want to bug him. | |
0x0CC9C7D6 | Laverne | He's just running and running and running... |
Dialogue for using some object on the Junk In Boxes. No object or verb seems to trigger this response, but it seems most likely to have been intended for the Hubcap.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0CE5AA00 | Laverne | I don't want to put it in storage yet. I like it. I want to carry it around with me. |
Generic Unused Dialogue
Dialogue intended to play while doing interactions with various generic objects in the game, such as the Chron-O-John.
Chron-O-John
All three playable characters have dialogue for trying to put objects in the Chron-O-John that are too big. The only three items Hoagie can get that he can't put in the Chron-O-John all play different dialogue instead of this default response.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0E5591BF | Hoagie | That won't fit in there. |
All three playable characters have dialogue that seems to be intended to play when putting an object in the Chron-O-John Toilet when it's already got an object in it. Attempting to do this in the game simply results in the character taking out the current object and then putting the new object in there, without playing the dialogue.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0E560616 | Hoagie | There's something already in there. | |
0x0E499452 | Bernard | There's something already in there. | |
0x0E4F83A2 | Laverne | There's something already in there. |
Other
All three playable characters have dialogue for trying to use objects that aren't in their inventory, but none of the objects in the Future meet this criteria.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0E3CA3AC | Laverne | I haven't got that. |
All three playable characters have dialogue for attempting to open locked doors, but none of the doors in the Future are locked. Technically, neither are any of the doors in the Past, but the line is also used for the Outhouses.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0E4D8224 | Laverne | Hmm, this door appears to be locked. |
All three playable characters have this dialogue with an unknown purpose. A similar response is used for trying to put large objects in the Chron-O-John.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0E459E23 | Hoagie | It won't fit. | |
0x0E380F55 | Bernard | It won't fit. | |
0x0E3F0793 | Laverne | It won't fit. |
Unused Dialogue With No Subtitles
Dialogue with no scripts or subtitles remaining in the game's files. It's pretty obvious what most of them are intended for, whilst some of them are a bit more mysterious...
Attic (past)
Unused dialogue stored amongst the Mattress dialogue which seems most likely to have been intended for interacting with the Squeaky Mattress after Hoagie has already moved it from Ned's Bed over to Jed's Bed.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x02F855A5 | Hoagie | It looks fine where it is. |
Lobby (present)
Unused dialogue stored amongst the Lobby dialogue. It seems to have been replaced with the line "Hoagie's got that part of the house.", perhaps because it was too similar to the used "Laverne's covering that territory." line.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x067DC1CB | Bernard | Hoagie's covering that territory. |
Convention Hall
A sound of a man laughing stored amongst the Cigar Salesman dialogue which seems most likely to have been intended for when the Cigar Salesman laughs at Bernard. This is actually a stock sound effect from the Cartoon Trax Volume 1 sound effects library, and can be heard in numerous animated films such as The Jungle Book and Song of the South.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x1004459F | Cigar Salesman | (Stock laughter sound effect) |
Secret Lab (present)
Unused dialogue stored amongst the Secret Lab dialogue which seems most likely to have been intended for telling the player they got the copy protection segment wrong.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x047859B3 | Bernard | Let's try it again. |
Time Vortex
Purple Tentacle has some unused dialogue placed right between his used dialogue of "Hahahahahaha..." and "DIE! HAHAHA! DIE!...", possibly suggesting it was originally meant to play during the same cutscene.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0E30663F | Purple Tentacle | Perish fools! |
Laundry Room
Unused dialogue stored amongst the Laundry Room dialogue which seems most likely to have originally been for the Shrunken Sweater. The Shrunken Sweater curiously has no dialogue associated with it when looking at it as Bernard or Hoagie, despite being a valid object they can receive.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x047697C | Bernard | It looks a little small for me. |
Lobby (future)
A really, really long bit of dialogue of the Grandfather Clock Guard responding to the question "Has anybody ever escaped from this place?" which seems to have been left in the files by mistake. It's stored right next to, and is exactly the same as the used dialogue, except it's just one sound file instead of being split into two. It's also the only piece of dialogue in the entire game without an associated VCTL (lip sync data) file.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0FAF32A0 | Grandfather Clock Guard | Some try once in a while, but I always fetch them back. That's my primary duty here, and I take it very seriously. I always get my man, no matter how long it takes. Why, I once trailed a renegade human for six days. He led me clear through the hills and up to the top of those mountains to the west. You couldn't possibly imagine the horrible things I had to eat to survive. |
Kennel
Dialogue that may have been intended for using the Disappearing Ink on the Kennel Guard while not wearing the Tentacle Costume. It's impossible to reach the Kennel Guard in that state, but if you do so with debug commands nothing happens at all rather than the default "Not funny enough." response.
Offset | Character | Subtitle | Dialogue |
---|---|---|---|
0x0BDD415A | Kennel Guard | Don't push me, human. |
Partially Unused Dialogue
A few pieces of used dialogue in this game are set to cut off before they play out in full, rendering them partially unused.
Attic (past)
Hoagie's short grunts uttered while he moves the Mattress are actually a bit longer. Only about half of each of these files is played before being interrupted by the next one.
