Software Development Schedules
To do: There's a few more with minor changes. July 5, 2006 also has a grid about DS features (wifi, rumble etc), but I didn't work out how to read it properly. There are NOA and NOE schedules with a different filename scheme. |
Software Development Schedules = PDFs with "ソフト開発日程表" in the name. Schedules with no change from the last one have been omitted.
Jul 1, 2005
The game is listed as "2Dマリオ" (2D Mario) and doesn't have a gamecode specified. Just the Japanese version was scheduled for completion at the end of 2005 and it didn't have a scheduled release date. The game ended up being completed on March 29, 2006, going by the earliest build date (which is for the USA ROM).

The game is now listed as "New スーパーマリオブラザーズ" and "NEW SUPER MARIO BROS".
The development for the Japanese and USA versions were scheduled scheduled for completion in Spring 2006, and for Europe 2006 Q2, which match up with the build dates in the ROM. The development departments have been specified as EAD Group No. 4 and SRD.
It's described as having two modes - a main platforming mode that can be played alone, and competitive minigames that can be played by four players.

It no longer mentions rumble cart support or internet connectivity.

There are multiple versions of some of the spreadsheets (as can be seen above), but they don't seem to differ much. Some of the screenshots and notes in the spreadsheets pertain to early versions of the game. The following tables contain summarised data from the spreadsheets. Column contents taken straight from the spreadsheet: "Japanese Name", "English Name" and "Image". Pieces of text in square brackets are comments, not part of the original text.
Enemies
This page or section needs more images. There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this. Specifically: Comparison images |
Japanese Name | English Name | Image | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
ノコノコ | Koopa | Early grassland tileset and background. The image probably depicts a test level. | |
パタパタ | Paratroopa | Early grassland tileset and background. | |
クリボー | Goomba | Early grassland tileset and background. | |
パタクリボー | Paragoomba | Interestingly, the Paragoomba is in a grassland level, even though they are only found in 2-4 in the final game, and 2-4 is a desert stage. Early grassland tileset and background. | |
マメクリボー | Mini Goomba | Early castle tileset and background, and possibly early Mario model. The image probably depicts a test level. | |
サンボ | Pokey | Early desert background. The image probably depicts a test level. | |
ファイアスネーク | Fire Snake | Early castle tileset and background and early Fire Snake graphics. The image probably depicts a test level. | |
カロン | Dry Bones | Early castle tileset and background and early Mario model and idle animation. | |
大カロン | Super Dry Bones | " | |
ドッスン | Thwomp | " Image probably depicts a test level. | |
大ドッスン | Super Thwomp | " Image probably depicts a test level. | |
プクプク | Cheep-Cheep | Early underwater background. The Cheep-Cheep is facing slightly upwards, probably chasing Mario like Cheep-Cheeps did in the E3 2005 trailer build. | |
バクバク | Cheep-Chomp | Early underwater tileset and background, early ? Block graphics and an early Mario model. | |
サーチプクプク | Deep-Cheep | Early underwater tileset and background and early Mario model. | |

トビプク | (特に名称は無い, プクプクと同じ) |
The water has a flat top and the Jumping Cheep-Cheep is larger than it is in the final game. The enemy behaviour description ("水の上に飛び跳ねながら前に進む") states that they move while jumping up and down above the water - there's an unused setting of normal Cheep-Cheeps in the final game that makes them act like this. The final Jumping Cheep-Cheep is a separate actor which swims around in the water and jumps out occasionally. The image probably depicts a test level. | |
ボム兵 | Bob-omb | Early castle tileset and background and possibly early Bob-omb model. The image probably depicts a test level. | |
ハナビボム兵 | Kab-omb | Early volcano tileset and background. | |
バサバサ | Swoop | Early castle tileset and background and possibly early Swoop model. The image probably depicts a test level. | |
パックンフラワー | Piranha Plant | Early grassland background. Comparing the Piranha Plant with the background, it seems like the Piranha Plant was roughly double-size like it was in 2005 builds shown in pre-release materials. | |
ファイアパックン | Venus Fire Trap | Possibly early pipe graphics. The description says it fires 1-2 fireballs, but in the final game, the settings for two (or more) fireballs are unused. | |
パックンフラワー | Super Piranha Plant | Early desert tileset and background and early Mario model and idle animation. The image probably depicts a test level. | |
ファイアパックン | Super Venus Fire Trap | " Early fireball graphics. Note that the Super Venus Fire Trap enemy is left unused in the final game. The image probably depicts a test level. | |
ハナチャン | Wiggler | Image seems to have been taken from an analog video source. The text "NOW PRINTING" is hidden behind the image. | |
バッタン | Whomp | Early castle tileset and background and early Mario model and idle animation. The image probably depicts a test level. | |
バブル | Podoboo | " | |
金網ノコノコ | Koopa | " The Fence Koopa seems to be using the SM64DS Koopa model that is leftover in the final game. Accordingly, it seems to be using a normal walking animation. | |
ボムメンボ | Skeeter | Image seems to have been taken from an analog video source. | |
トゲツムリ | Snailicorn | ||
クロスケー | Crowber | ||
ハンマーブロス | Hammer Bro(s.) | ||

メット | Buzzy Beetle | Early castle tileset and background and early Buzzy Beetle model. The image probably depicts a test level. | |

ブロックン | Blockhopper | Early desert background and early ? Block and Brick Block graphics. | |
[N/A] | [N/A] | This image was hidden behind the image of the Blockhopper. Early Ghost House tileset and background. This invisible lava bubble enemy exists unused in the final game. | |
[N/A] | [N/A] | This image was hidden behind the above image. Early Ghost House background. The final Phantom Hands use a 3D model, but the 2D graphics seen here exist unused in the final game. | |
ケロンパ | Flame Chomp | Early castle background and possibly early Flame Chomp model. The image probably depicts a test level. | |
テレサ | Boo | ||
プープーテレサ | Balloon Boo | Possibly early Ghost House background and early Balloon Boo textures. | |
カボちゃん | Splunkin | Early Ghost House tileset background and an early Splunkin model/textures. | |
キラー | Bullet Bill | Early grassland tileset and background and an early Bullet Bill model/textures. | |
マグナムキラー | Banzai Bill | Early grassland tileset and background and early Banzai Bill and Banzai Bill Blaster model/textures (and possibly early Banzai Bill animations, as its unlikely they timed the screenshot so it wasn't rotated). Possibly an early Mario model. | |

わかばちゃん | Squiggler | ||
ホージロー | Sushi | Early Underwater background, early Mario model and possibly early Sushi model. The Sushi is moving to the right - back-and-forth movement is mentioned in the description and can be seen in the E3 2005 trailer, and a setting for it was left unused in the final game. | |

Characters
Japanese Name | English Name | Image | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
マリオ | Mario | Image seems to have been taken from an analog video source. | |
ルイージ | Luigi | The description says that he's planned to only appear in two-player mode, but in the final he can be played in single-player mode too, by holding a L+R when starting a file. Said button combo is displayed after the end credits. Image seems to have been taken from an analog video source. | |
ピーチ | Peach | Image seems to have been taken from an analog video source. | |
クッパJr | Bowser Jr. | Image seems to have been taken from an analog video source. | |
クッパ | Bowser | Image seems to have been taken from an analog video source. | |
キノピオ | Toad | The image and description confirms that the small dots (shrunk-down Toadsworth models) in the intro are meant to be Toads, although this isn't exactly surprising. | |
キノ爺 | Toadsworth | The description says he "appears in 1-Up Toad Houses" (キノピオの1UPハウスで登場), but he appears in all Toad Houses, not just the 1-Up ones. Image seems to have been taken from an analog video source. |
