This page details development materials of New Super Mario Bros..

Hmmm...
To do:
particle.zip seems to contain early particle data from 2005
How about a nice leek in this trying time?
This page or section details content from the July 2021 Nintendo Leak.
Check the July 2021 Nintendo Leak category for more pages also sourced from this material.

The teru-sama_mail_2006.7z archive of the July 2021 Nintendo leaks included some internal documents containing info on the game's development.

Software Development Schedules

Hmmm...
To do:
There's a few more with minor changes. July 5, 2006 also has a grid about DS features (wifi, rumble etc), but I didn't work out how to read it properly. There are NOA and NOE schedules with a different filename scheme.

Software Development Schedules = PDFs with "ソフト開発日程表" in the name. Schedules with no change from the last one have been omitted.

Jul 1, 2005

The game is listed as "2Dマリオ" (2D Mario) and doesn't have a gamecode specified. Just the Japanese version was scheduled for completion at the end of 2005 and it didn't have a scheduled release date. The game ended up being completed on March 29, 2006, going by the earliest build date (which is for the USA ROM).

Sep 20, 2005

The game is now listed as "New スーパーマリオブラザーズ" and "NEW SUPER MARIO BROS".

The development for the Japanese and USA versions were scheduled scheduled for completion in Spring 2006, and for Europe 2006 Q2, which match up with the build dates in the ROM. The development departments have been specified as EAD Group No. 4 and SRD.

It's described as having two modes - a main platforming mode that can be played alone, and competitive minigames that can be played by four players.

Dec 21, 2005

USA version is now scheduled for release in May 2006, which lines up with the actual release date.

It no longer mentions rumble cart support or internet connectivity.

(Source: Original TCRF research)

Feb 3, 2006

ROM size and save chip type are now listed as 256M and 64kEEPROM, which match the released game.

Scheduled completion dates for Japan is 2006/4/20, USA is 2006/3/20 and Europe is 2006/Q2. The actual build dates were on the 4th and the 7th and 26th, respectively.

Scheduled release date for Japan is 2006/5/25, which matches the actual release, April 2006 for the USA - the actual release ended up being delayed till May, and June 2006 for Europe, which matches the actual release.

There are multiple versions of some of the spreadsheets (as can be seen above), but they don't seem to differ much. Some of the screenshots and notes in the spreadsheets pertain to early versions of the game. The following tables contain summarised data from the spreadsheets. Column contents taken straight from the spreadsheet: "Japanese Name", "English Name" and "Image". Pieces of text in square brackets are comments, not part of the original text.

Careful, you'll lose an eye.
This page or section needs more images.
There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this.

クリボー Goomba NSMB-development-korean localisation docs-enemies-goomba.png Early grassland tileset and background.
パタクリボー Paragoomba NSMB-development-korean localisation docs-enemies-paragoomba.png Interestingly, the Paragoomba is in a grassland level, even though they are only found in 2-4 in the final game, and 2-4 is a desert stage. Early grassland tileset and background.
マメクリボー Mini Goomba NSMB-development-korean localisation docs-enemies-mini goomba.png Early castle tileset and background, and possibly early Mario model. The image probably depicts a test level.

バクバク Cheep-Chomp NSMB-development-korean localisation docs-enemies-cheep chomp.png Early underwater tileset and background, early ? Block graphics and an early Mario model.

NSMB-development-korean localisation docs-enemies-jumping cheep cheep.png The water has a flat top and the Jumping Cheep-Cheep is larger than it is in the final game. The enemy behaviour description ("水の上に飛び跳ねながら前に進む") states that they move while jumping up and down above the water - there's an unused setting of normal Cheep-Cheeps in the final game that makes them act like this. The final Jumping Cheep-Cheep is a separate actor which swims around in the water and jumps out occasionally. The image probably depicts a test level.
ボム兵 Bob-omb NSMB-development-korean localisation docs-enemies-bobomb.png Early castle tileset and background and possibly early Bob-omb model. The image probably depicts a test level.

パックンフラワー Piranha Plant NSMB-development-korean localisation docs-enemies-pipe piranha plant.png Early grassland background. Comparing the Piranha Plant with the background, it seems like the Piranha Plant was roughly double-size like it was in 2005 builds shown in pre-release materials.
ファイアパックン Venus Fire Trap NSMB-development-korean localisation docs-enemies-fire piranha plant.png Possibly early pipe graphics. The description says it fires 1-2 fireballs, but in the final game, the settings for two (or more) fireballs are unused.
パックンフラワー Super Piranha Plant NSMB-development-korean localisation docs-enemies-piranha plant.png Early desert tileset and background and early Mario model and idle animation. The image probably depicts a test level.
ファイアパックン Super Venus Fire Trap NSMB-development-korean localisation docs-enemies-big fire piranha plant.png " Early fireball graphics. Note that the Super Venus Fire Trap enemy is left unused in the final game. The image probably depicts a test level.

金網ノコノコ Koopa NSMB-development-korean localisation docs-enemies-fence koopa.png " The Fence Koopa seems to be using the SM64DS Koopa model that is leftover in the final game. Accordingly, it seems to be using a normal walking animation.

マグナムキラー Banzai Bill NSMB-development-korean localisation docs-enemies-banzai bill blaster.png Early grassland tileset and background and early Banzai Bill and Banzai Bill Blaster model/textures (and possibly early Banzai Bill animations, as its unlikely they timed the screenshot so it wasn't rotated). Possibly an early Mario model.
ドッシー Dorrie NSMB-development-korean localisation docs-enemies-dorrie.png Early Poison Water graphics. The text "no picture" is hidden behind the image.
わかばちゃん Squiggler NSMB-development-korean localisation docs-enemies-squiggler.png
ホージロー Sushi NSMB-development-korean localisation docs-enemies-sushi.png Early Underwater background, early Mario model and possibly early Sushi model.
