Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire Repo
Found in the sangopart1\sangopart1~\export\svn2\sango_ctrlib\sango_app\trunk\common\pokegra_rs\bmp\bmp.zip directory regarding Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire data are scratchpad progress sprites seemingly copied from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire's development, granted an unknown date. Given that this uses the final Pokédex order for filenames, it's likely from after the 2002 Festa build shown in trailers. Unfortunately, no source file date is available for these bitmaps.
All Scratchpads have the final sprite in the top-left corner.

Pokémon | Scratchpad | Sprite Corrections (if applicable) |
Palette Data (If noted) | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
Bulbasaur | Final. | |||
Ivysaur | Leaves and bulb were redrawn. Early version's design only has two leaves, one on each side, and is reminiscent of the Red and Blue artwork's design. The isolated snippet appears to be an alternative version of the bulb for the rightmost sprite, and seamlessly slots over it. Said bulb is identical to the final sprite's. | |||
Venusaur | Final. | |||
Charmander | Leg was slightly shifted and reshaded between early and final. Otherwise very close to final. | |||
Charmeleon | Final. | |||
Charizard | Eyes are looking down in the final, wings were tweaked, and the snout was shortened. | |||
Squirtle | Final. | |||
Wartortle | Final. | |||
Blastoise | Final. Interestingly, this sprite's BMP is one of the few with a shiny palette present in its color palette. In this case, the shiny differs from final: it uses a sky blue for the body instead of the final's light steel blue, and a slightly more vibrant green shell. | |||
Caterpie | Final. | |||
Metapod | Early version has messy, off-model anatomy, namely with the placement of the nubs and eyes. | |||
Butterfree | Early version appears to be an unfinished draft. The sprite lacks black outlines, one of the antennae is made near-invisible by a tangent with the edge of the nearby wing, and the wings look unfinished: one has an off-model pattern with unpolished shading, while the other is entirely blank. | |||
Weedle | Final. | |||
Kakuna | The bottom of the pupa was redrawn, and shading on the head was improved. | |||
Beedrill | Final. | |||
Pidgey | Earliest version of the sprite has the head facing to the side. Second version is nearly identical to final, lacking minor polish and having one extra toe. Extra toe might stem from key art from the Original Series anime. | |||
Pidgeotto | The early version's stance is more stiff, the final's is more dynamic. Like Pidgey, it also had one extra toe like its Original Series Anime art. Head seems to be redrawn from Silver's sprite, while the body appears to use a flipped version of Gold's sprite as a base. | |||
Pidgeot | Final. | |||
Rattata | Early sprite was downscaled leading to final. Shading received polish. | |||
Raticate | Early sprite was downscaled leading to final. Alternate shading. | |||
Spearow | Final. | |||
Fearow | Contains two earlier stages of the final sprite. The nearly complete one has a white-furred tail design with one less toe on each talon. This alternative design comes from the Red and Blue artwork. | |||
Ekans | Early sprite has its stripes incorrectly colored yellow. This error appears to be a holdover from the Red and Blue artwork. | |||
Arbok | Final. | |||
Pikachu | Has various WIP sprites. Missing outline compared to final. Final oddly removes highlight for body. | |||
Raichu | Early version has a yellow belly, which may have been misinterpreted from the Generation 2 sprites. | |||
Sandshrew | Redrawn with less chubby proportions. Missing black in outline for WIP. | |||
Sandslash | Shading, leg, and quills adjusted. Also includes an unfinished back sprite. | |||
Nidoran♀ | Final. | |||
Nidorina | Its size, proportions, and shading were adjusted. | |||
Nidoqueen | Final. | |||
Nidoran♂ | Redrawn pose. Early version lacks black in outline. | |||
Nidorino | Final. | |||
Nidoking | Final. | |||
Clefairy | Contains two early versions, each adjusting the pose alongside other minor polishes. Second iteration was downscaled leading to final. | |||
Clefable | Final. | |||
Vulpix | Earlier version of final. Head was downsized. The color of the paws matched the color of the tail and hair, akin to some older artwork. Lacks black outlines. | |||
Ninetales | Two early sprites. The first is a rough, unpolished outline of the pose, lacking black outlines. The second is very close to final, it was adjusted to sit taller in the finished version, alongside minor tweaks. | |||
Jigglypuff | First iteration lacks black outlines and was downscaled leading to the second iteration. | |||
Wigglytuff | First iteration lacks black outlines and was adjusted to be less off-model. | |||
Zubat | Less polished version of final. Has shorter tails, lacks black outlines, and is missing the lines in the inner ears. | |||
Golbat | Less polished and smaller version of final. Lacks black outlines, curiously uses dark purple as outline for the blue parts of the body. | |||
Oddish | Final. | |||
Gloom | Early sprite with a different pose. Also contains what appears to be an alternate version of the final sprite's leg, as the small snippet can seamlessly slot over the final sprite. | |||
Vileplume | Final. | |||
Paras | Contains an early, larger scaled draft of the final sprite. Eyes have raw magenta in their center, which may have originated from a program error. | |||
Parasect | Partially based on its sprite from Silver, though ultimately redrawn. | |||
Venonat | Fur was shrunken down for final, along with tweaks to the feet. | |||
Venomoth | Final. As a side note, its palette contains the same unused shades of yellow as in the final. | |||
Diglett | Final. | |||
Dugtrio | Final. | |||
Meowth | Has more squat proportions like various Generation 1 art. Final is proportioned more like the anime. | |||
Persian | Final. | |||
Psyduck | Eyes, shading, and width adjusted. | |||
Golduck | Final. | |||
Mankey | Final. | |||
Primeape | Final. | |||
Growlithe | Redrawn at a slightly smaller resolution. | |||
Arcanine | Final. | |||
Poliwag | Early version has shorter legs in a split position. Tail has a blue gradient on its base which may have been misinterpreted from some early art. Unrefined shading and lacks black outlines. | |||
Poliwhirl | Final. | |||
Poliwrath | Final. | |||
Abra | Proportions are too even, overall large. Missing black in outline. | |||
Kadabra | Differing hand pose. Missing black in outline. | |||
Alakazam | The WIP is more explicitly based on the Red and Blue artwork. | |||
Machop | Almost completely redrawn due to being off-model, particularly for lopsided eyes. | |||
Machoke | Was initially made using the Gold/Silver sprite for base for the head, then redrawn. Both lack black in outline. | |||
Machamp | Final. | |||
Bellsprout | Redrawn at a slightly smaller resolution. | |||
Weepinbell | Final. | |||
Victreebel | Back view is unfinished. | |||
Tentacool | Final. | |||
Tentacruel | Tentacles adjusted twice. | |||
Geodude | Final. | |||
Graveler | Redrawn to be larger and less stilted. Lacks black in outline for WIP. | |||
Golem | Final. | |||
Ponyta | Final. | |||
Rapidash | Had a boxier body for the top WIP, was redrawn to be more anatomically correct. Both WIP sprites lack black in outline, and have simpler shading. | |||
Slowpoke | Final. | |||
Slowbro | Final. | |||
Magnemite | Final. | |||
Magneton | Same sprite but with adjusted shading. Transparency errors in the bolts for the WIP suggest that the original transparent color was white. | |||
Farfetch’d | Has more exaggerated proportions in WIP. Redrawn with a more dynamic pose. | |||
Doduo | Pose differences. | |||
Dodrio | Was missing a toe on each talon, matching the Red and Blue art. | |||
Seel | Various WIP sprites leading to final's pose. | |||
Dewgong | Angrier expression. Shading for bottom of body was also adjusted for final. | |||
Grimer | Final. | |||
Muk | Completely redrawn after being too off-model. | |||
Shellder | Redrawn to be less bulky. | |||
Cloyster | Longer spike in WIP, overall the shell was redrawn. Also isn't smiling in WIP, and is missing black in outline. | |||
Gastly | Final. | |||
Haunter | Adjusted hand position. Missing black in outline. | |||
Gengar | Final. | |||
Onix | Final. | |||
Drowzee | Final. | |||
Hypno | Various WIP sprites missing black in outline. Top in particular has a comically large nose. | |||
Krabby | Final. | |||
Kingler | Redrawn at a slightly higher resolution. WIP is missing black in outline. | |||
Voltorb | Redrawn. WIP is missing black in outline. | |||
Electrode | Slightly rough outline for WIP. Smile and shading were tweaked in final. | |||
Exeggcute | Final. | |||
Exeggutor | Palm tree leaves were flatter and shorter. The body highlight color seems to have been overwritten by the tongue color from the final sprite in the palette. Also missing black in outline compared to final. | |||
Cubone | Final. | |||
Marowak | Head more closely looks like it did in the Generation 2 sprites. Missing black in outline compared to final. | |||
Hitmonlee | Redrawn to have a slightly stronger silhouette. | |||
Hitmonchan | Short and stubby proportions. Clearly based off Silver's sprite. | |||
Lickitung | Various WIP sprites with simplified shading, both missing black in outline. | |||
Koffing | Minor shading and smoke adjustment. For some reason, the unfinished one is used as base for the "Pokémon Emerald" sprite. | |||
Weezing | Final. | |||
Rhyhorn | Very minor tweak for mouth. | |||
Rhydon | Various WIP sprites. Top center's face is very blobby. | |||
Chansey | Right feelers redrawn. | |||
Tangela | Alternate pose. | |||
Kangaskhan | Redrawn, went from frown to smile. Missing black in outline. | |||
Horsea | Center top WIP has 2 fins like its Red and Blue artwork. Back sprite is unfinished for shading/dithering. Both WIP sprites are missing black in outline compared to final. | |||
Seadra | Missing black in outline. Was redrawn. | |||
Goldeen | Scaled bigger and expression adjusted in final. WIP is missing black in outline. | |||
Seaking | Scaled bigger for final, with horn angled more straight in final. Both WIP sprites lack black in outline, and back sprite is unfinished for shading. | |||
Staryu | At a slightly more dynamic angle in WIP. Redrawn for final. | |||
Starmie | Proportions are stumpy, closer to Red and Blue art and Generation 2 sprites. | |||
Mr. Mime | Final. | |||
Scyther | Has two alternate poses. The middle one is based on a frame from its Crystal sprites flipped for head and lower body, limited to a 56x56 canvas. | |||
Jynx | Final. | |||
Electabuzz | Several unfinished versions that final's pose is based on. Top looks more to the left. Both lack black in outline. | |||
Magmar | Simplified fire and lack of highlights in WIP, along with no black in outline. Also has transparency errors for toe claws, suggesting base transparent color was white initially. | |||
Pinsir | Early sprite is uses a flipped version of Silver's sprite as a base. Arms were raised and redrawn to be more on-model, mouth was opened, eyes were enlarged. | |||
Tauros | Adjusted to stand up straighter. Missing black in outline. | |||
Magikarp | The pose is stiff and its inner mouth is colored bright red. Missing black in outlines compared to final. | |||
Gyarados | Redrawn to be more on model. | |||
Lapras | Several variations of the beached pose, with the bottom one having an oversized head compared to final. All lacking black in outline compared to final. | |||
Ditto | Final. | |||
Eevee | Two alternate poses, both with larger eyes. Center lacks black in outline and most likely uses Silver's sprite as reference, best seen with the hind leg being nearly identical. | |||
Vaporeon | Proportions were adjusted twice, tail also reposed. Earliest version lacks black outlines and clearly uses Silver's sprite as a base, with the head being a near perfect match. | |||
Jolteon | Head was shifted over slightly. | |||
Flareon | Slightly bigger in WIP, black missing in outline. | |||
Porygon | Final. | |||
Omanyte | Larger shell and eyes that are too far apart. Black isn't used for outline, so the blue areas incorrectly use tan in the WIP. Bears a notable resemblance to Silver's sprite. | |||
Omastar | Tentacles made slightly shorter in final. | |||
Kabuto | Lacks eyes on top, along with being shrunken slightly. | |||
Kabutops | Miscolored under belly, along with lack of outlines. Redrawn for final. | |||
Aerodactyl | The WIP has a longer face in relation to its body and is looking more to the left, seemingly limited to a 56x56 canvas. Final redrawn with an adjusted pose. | |||
Snorlax | Feet made shorter, and black was added for outline after minor adjustments in final. | |||
Articuno | Most of the the back sprites of previously released Pokémon in the generation 3 games are polished versions of their Crystal back sprites. This back sprite of Articuno is recolored but not reshaded, more closely resembling the detailing of its Crystal sprite. Its shading and eye detail was further altered in its final iteration.
For the center sprite, this is seemingly constrained to a 56x56 sprite boundary like the GB/GBC games, before being redrawn and extended to a full 64x64 frame for final. | |||
Zapdos | Slightly redrawn. The WIP is missing black in outline, and has an extra toe that would become standard after "Fire Red & Leaf Green". | |||
Moltres | Partially based on its sprite from Gold. Wings were given frame instead of being purely fire, and it was redrawn to occupy the full 64x64 frame. | |||
Dratini | Redrawn to have a longer body, along with tail curling to the right instead of left. | |||
Dragonair | Redrawn at a slightly higher resolution, along with shading changes. A new shade of grey was added for the ears. | |||
Dragonite | Off-model. Foot pads were removed in final. | |||
Mewtwo | Has an alternate pose with an arm extending outward, while far right is missing the tail. Missing black in both versions' outline. | |||
Mew | Earlier version has neck and head less segmented, along with dark blotches on tail end and base. Far right is an unfinished basis for final. |
Generation 2
A good chunk of Generation 2's sprites are already finalized.
Generation 3
Some Generation 3 Pokémon have what appears to be an entire stock palette leftover from a graphics editor used in development in their BMP data.
The following Pokemon have remnants of it:
- Azurill
- Pelipper
- Wailmer
- Surskit
- Kecleon
- Sableye
- Sharpedo

Palette Data (If noted) | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
Treecko | There's a fully drawn back sprite. In final this is cropped. | |||
Grovyle | The Archaeon sprite from Nov 1st, 2001 is seen in the far right, though with corrupted palette. The back sprite is lacking a highlight seen in final. | |||
Sceptile | Tail is flipped horizontally. Yellow knee pads removed, along with gaining arm blades for the final sprite. | |||
Torchic | Uncropped back view. | |||
Combusken | All sprites final. | |||
Blaziken | Final front and back view. | |||
Mudkip | Uncropped back view. | |||
Marshtomp | Final front and back view. | |||
Swampert | Both front sprites are final. Back has longer dorsal fin along its spine, and raised shoulder for left arm compared to final. | |||
Poochyena | Final front and back view. Despite later art difference, this was never corrected. | |||
Mightyena | WIP sprites for front and back feature a more defined snarl and less refined shading. Bottom-right sprites match final. | |||
Zigzagoon | Includes its design from Nov 1st, 2001, as well as an in-between look that's more glassy-eyed compared to final. The palette has 2 unused colors dedicated to red, which won't be used until "Pokémon Emerald". | |||
Linoone | Early design with more clearly-differentiated body parts rather than the more continuous body shape of its final look, and a simpler stripe pattern. Far more aggressive posture. Zigzagoon is used as basis for palette before being overwritten. | |||
Wurmple | Final front and back view. | |||
Silcoon | Backsprite has two pixels different than the final. | |||
Beautifly | Primitive early design seen on the right, notably lacking limbs and wing patterning. | |||
Cascoon | The earlier back sprite on the right has less detail. | |||
Dustox | Very minor adjustments of its antenna colors and parts of its wings. Back view is in progress. Despite art differences, this sprite wasn't modified further to match until Emerald. | |||
Lotad | Final. | |||
Lombre | Despite the lack of black in outline, both sprites are identical to final, along with its back view. | |||
Ludicolo | There's a corrupted older design embedded, but palette data shows its palette for the older design is still there, and thus can be restored by swapping it. This design has a similar lily pad crown to final Ludicolo, but donut lips rather than a beak. It's covered in white fur and generally slim. Interestingly, it has 4 fingers.
For the more final sprite on the right, there are minor shading differences at the bottom. | |||
Seedot | Includes its early design from Nov 1, 2001. Front and back view are finalized. | |||
Nuzleaf | Has a rough, uncropped sketch of its back view. Early front sprites have one fewer stripe on the "pants" and different leaf shading; transparency error on the left sprite's mask suggests the original transparent color was white. | |||
Shiftry | Two early designs more explicitly based on a Tengu, with a corrupted color palette. Back sprite matches final. | |||
Taillow | Many revisions with a rough, unfinished sketch in the top middle. A similar open-wing pose would be used in the second frame of its Emerald sprite. Also features a variation of the early Swalot sprite from the latter's scratchpad, with a slight pose tweak to the bottom-left corner of its body. | |||
Swellow | Top-right front and back view have a shorter beak as well as slight expression and shading differences. Bottom-right front and back sprites match final. | |||
Wingull | Has #304 from November 1st, 2001, whose stats were reused for Wingull. Back view has rounded wings, with a rough sketch showing how to correct the wings. | |||
Pelipper | Several copies of both the final design and of the WIP sprites from March 2002, where it has a pronounced hump and simplified shading.
In addition to this, it seems to have a second palette with colors similar to the November 2001 sprite, alongside stock graphics editor palettes. | |||
Ralts | Includes sprites for a dog-like Pokémon seemingly based on the Psycho Dog concept, alongside copies of the early Metagross, Metang, and Kyogre sprites from their respective scratchpads. Given that this uses Latios' palette as a base, the dog sprites may have originally looked more blue before being overwritten. | |||
Kirlia | Has copies of final Ralts and Gardevoir sprites, as well as the early Metang and Kyogre again. | |||
Gardevoir | As before, uses Latios as a palette base, and includes the same early Kyogre sprites. | |||
Surskit | Final including back view, despite lack of black in outline. | |||
Masquerain | WIP sprites are missing some patterning on the wings. An alternate color palette is present, which features bright orange wings for the center WIP and back sprite. Oddly, despite using the brown shade instead of red, the back sprite wasn't further modified for the final. | |||
Shroomish | Early sprites still have more defined feet like the March 2002 concept art before being redrawn for final, and lack black in outlines. | |||
Breloom | Includes design from Nov 1, 2001. | |||
Slakoth | Has early WIP with unfinished shading and rough outlines. Final uses the back sprite flipped, but oddly doesn't update shading direction. | |||
Vigoroth | Almost miniscule pupil in its eye, alongside simpler shading, and highlight in hair unlike final. Slakoth seems to have been used as basis for palette before being overwritten. | |||
Slaking | Includes front and back sprites for an early design with a simpler nose and no white fur scruff, as well as slight pose and shading differences. Also has a copy of one of the early Aggron designs from its scratchpad, possibly used as a palette base. | |||
Nincada | Includes design from Nov 1, 2001. | |||
Ninjask | Includes design from Nov 1, 2001. | |||
Shedinja | Includes design from Nov 1, 2001. | |||
Whismur | Has an earlier design with more hunched posture, and black ear tips instead of yellow. | |||
Loudred | Has some revisions, mainly to have more rounded feet, and less black outline. | |||
Exploud | Has revisions, mainly to have a less square jaw, and improve shading. Back sprite lacks yellow rings around its pores. | |||
Makuhita | Multiple copies of the final front sprite, alongside a WIP version of the back sprite, missing black in outline. | |||
Hariyama | Has recolored copies of the March 2002 sprites for front and back. | |||
Azurill | Has a bouncing animation on the right based on the sprite from November 2001. It seems animations like Crystal were once planned, before being scrapped. | |||
Nosepass | WIP front sprite has a bulkier nose and wider eyes, along with some slight shading and pattern differences on the main body. Back sprite is from November 2001. | |||
Skitty | Early design for both front and back sprites features a completely different face, more forward-facing ear tufts, a thinner tail, and shading differences including a more prominent divide between the pink and cream halves of its torso. Notably, the open eyes match those of artwork from February 2002, which is otherwise much closer to the final design than these sprites. Back sprite is uncropped compared to final. | |||
Delcatty | Has a prominent, more human-like nose, and three pins on its collar instead of two. Unfinished back view is for an early design with two whiskers instead of one on each side of its face. Despite final art differences removing the yellow spot, this sprite wasn't further modified. | |||
Sableye | Early front and back sprites are based on its February 2002 artwork, with frilled ears and missing the red gem on its chest; one variation notably includes a visible mouth. Minor color correction for the back sprite is provided. | |||
Mawile | Dimmer color palette, seems to initially be more silver than dark grey, and lacking black in the outline. Early sprites are otherwise close to final, though with differences in the facial expression and teeth positioning. | |||
Aron | Early design has a much flatter and less segmented body shape, making it look more like a realistic animal (as well as more closely resembling Lairon). Uses Lairon and Aggron as base, with copies of the early sprites from their respective scratchpads included. | |||
Lairon | Has the polished March 2002 sprite for base, recolored. Early design has a flatter head-crest and jaw, fewer holes along the body, bumpier side plating, and simpler leg coloration. Once again, the line's signature blue eyes are not present yet. | |||
Aggron | Two early designs mainly differentiated by the head shapes, with the rightmost likely being the oldest draft given the entirely-missing horns and simpler shading. The uncolored leg cuffs and eyes from the previous stages are present here as well. Both early WIP sprites lack black in the outline. | |||
Meditite | Completely different design. Seems to have palette issues. | |||
Medicham | Wears a belly dancer-like headdress. Lacks black in outline for early design. | |||
Electrike | Unfinished rough sketches. The back sprite on the far left is uncropped but otherwise matches final, including the error of one of its tail spikes being missing. | |||
Manectric | Final front. Back sprite inexplicably is from Nov 2001, and used in final despite the yellow jaw. | |||
Plusle | Has two earlier designs, with the right/center bottom one having a red belly, no nose, ears in the shape of the plus sign, tan hands, squatter proportions, and a zoom trail for the front sprite. This design also lacks black in the outline.
The top center design is fairly close to final, but notably has black ears, paws, and tail. | |||
Minun | Is built off of Plusle, though with additional poses for the black-eared design. | |||
Volbeat | Has WIP for front and back sprite, both lacking black in outline, along with having unfinished shading. Nose seems to be intended to be darker, like fictional bugs in 1920s cartoons, though art by March 2002 already has it have a grey nose similar to the body color. Notably, Illumise has a black nose in final. | |||
Illumise | Has some WIP sprites. The center top one has a longer body, and no nose, while the WIP back far right is larger than final, with uneven shading and shape. The bottom center back sprite is cropped in final, but otherwise the same sprite. | |||
Roselia | Center top sprite has some minor shading differences, and swapped flower colors. The top-right back sprite has some color errors, different shading direction and horns, less open flowers, and the front leaf isn't seen. | |||
Gulpin | Alternate designs, one of which resembles a trash bag. This concept may have been reused for Trubbish in Generation 5. Uses an earlier design of Swalot for base, and the WIP sprites lack black in outline. | |||
Swalot | Has WIP sprites for Swalot based on art from March 2002 where its whiskers aren't fully yellow. The WIP sprites lack black in outline. | |||
Carvanha | Early designs have a bigger underbite, no star symbol on the belly, red teeth, and no red iris for eyes. The fin outline for the early sprites incorrectly uses blue, though can be fixed by swapping the dark yellow outline color used in final with the light blue in palette. A resized version of front was used as basis for the back sprite, before being redrawn. All WIP sprites lack black in outline. | |||
Sharpedo | Includes early front and back sprites from March 2002. Final back sprite is not present. | |||
Wailmer | Has a spouting animation based on older sprite from November 2001. | |||
Wailord | Older design seen in the back sprite seems more like a wide set blimp than the other WIP and final. The shading style implies these are from earlier than March, though Wailord isn't seen in the Nov 1st, 2001 sprite set. | |||
Numel | Includes design from Nov 1st, 2001, as well as other WIP sprites. Oddly, a shade of green was removed in the final sprites. | |||
Camerupt | Includes design from Nov 1st, 2001. The other WIP sprites have differently-drawn volcano stumps. | |||
Torkoal | Includes an early design that appears to be modeled after an incense burner. Incense burner held items were coincidentally introduced in Generation 3. Also appears to have a furred multi-tail. | |||
Spoink | Slightly wider in the WIP sprites, along with having brighter eyes. Despite compressing the tail spring for the 2nd one, the "Pokémon Emerald" 2nd frame does the reverse in stretching vertically. Oddly, even the final sprite lacks black for outline. | |||
Grumpig | Early front and back sprites have glassy eyes, a more defined snout, and a thinner, more coiled tail. Both WIP sprites lack black in outline. | |||
Spinda | Bottom sprites are near final, one having slight differences for the eye swirl. It seems they established the spot mechanic, with this spot pattern being the intended base. Lines up with the November sprite. | |||
Trapinch | Has missing back line in WIP. Oddly the WIP is more correct for the face for back sprite. | |||
Vibrava | Includes design from Nov 1, 2001. | |||
Flygon | Final front and back. | |||
Cacnea | Has mild shading differences for the back sprite WIP compared to final. Seems to use Solrock and Cacturne for base. Interestingly, the Cacturne appears older than the one in its respective Scratchpad if one corrects the palette. | |||
Cacturne | The center WIP has less outlining and no black used for back sprite. Seems to use Solrock and Nov 1st, 2001 Lunatone for base.
From the Cacnea Scratchpad, there are further outlining differences for the front sprite segmenting the head, and no black is used for outline. | |||
Swablu | Has a later version of the March 2002 sprite. Has uncropped version of back sprite. | |||
Altaria | Has #385 from November 1st, 2001, confirming it to be an early design. | |||
Zangoose | Has WIP sprites for an earlier design with a less catlike face, including a pink nose and white eyes, and different patterning of the red stripes on its body. | |||
Seviper | Lacks fangs, has more gold pads, overall flatter shading, and full black outlines. The darker purple seems to have swapped places in development for palette. Theorized correction. | |||
Lunatone | Final. | |||
Solrock | Final front and back view, with a copy of November 2001 Lunatone. | |||
Barboach | WIP built off of Whiscash for palette, with slight differences in the eye shape and stripe pattern. Some orange palette errors were ironed out for the final. | |||
Whiscash | Design was altered significantly. It has short blue whiskers, beady eyes, and a smaller tail. | |||
Corphish | Different eyes and head spikes. Outline was redone. | |||
Crawdaunt | Design nearly final; was reshaded and reoutlined, while tweaking eye focus. | |||
Baltoy | Has #318 from November 1st, 2001, confirming it to be an early design. Otherwise final front and back view, despite not having black in outline. | |||
Claydol | Final front and back view, despite not having black in outline. | |||
Lileep | Was redrawn without the rough black outline. The early design also has less squat proportions, bigger eyes, and less rounded tentacle tips than the final. | |||
Cradily | White belly piece, more protruding eyes, and rough outline. The neck stalk is more segmented like Lileep's instead of like final. | |||
Anorith | Several WIP sprites with rough black outline. Bottom center and right are final. | |||
Armaldo | Redrawn in a more dynamic pose with varied line color, while losing a toe. Oddly has black toe claws in final, despite this WIP being more in line with art having white toes. | |||
Feebas | Has unfinished WIP sprites lacking black in outline color. Top one has a shorter fin, while the back WIP is missing grooves on the bottom of its belly. | |||
Milotic | Has various rough WIP sprites for the final design, along with a more dragon-like earlier design with corrupted palette. There's another palette in the bitmap, but it doesn't seem to match all sprites, implying another design that was overwritten. | |||
Castform | Includes WIP sprites for several forms with the head protrusions missing or unfinished. There's a separate, unused 3-color palette for the normal form that seems to match closer to the tinted grey in art. | |||
Kecleon | A variety of different animations with the sprite from November 2001, including stepping around, disappearing, and sticking its tongue out. | |||
Shuppet | Alternate back view. Has November 2001 sprites in upper-right, though blacked out. | |||
Banette | Includes design from Nov 1, 2001, though with palette corrupted. | |||
Duskull | Has various WIP sprites based on the March 2002 sprite. Was overall made smaller for final. | |||
Dusclops | Has #338 from November 1st, 2001, whose stats were reused for Dusclops. Also has 2 extra palettes that seem to be WIP for the shiny color. There's an error for outlining for the sprite used in final that isn't fully fixed when the shiny palette is applied (see head wisp). | |||
Tropius | WIP sprites are close to final, mainly changing shading and outline color. | |||
Chimecho | Final front and back view. | |||
Absol | Has sprite seen in the March 2002 batch. | |||
Wynaut | Has WIP sprites, with pal color swapped later in dev. Correction provided for earlier top sprite. | |||
Snorunt | WIP has different shading. | |||
Glalie | The WIP sprite oddly has better mouth shading for front, though is missing back plate detail. WIP back sprite had outline and shading redone. | |||
Spheal | Has a recolored version of the March 2002 sprite before being redrawn for final. | |||
Sealeo | The entire creative process is on display, playing with different facial features and color assignment. The older WIP at top has a more aggressive design, with more spiky whiskers, pointed ears, and head dome. The middle WIP seems to be more arctic-inspired for color, though design is close to final. | |||
Walrein | Earlier design in WIP has bony back plates, a mustache, straight hair flaps, and overall more boatlike body. It might use an incorrect palette, given the blue tusks. Has an earlier WIP of Sealeo as well. | |||
Clamperl | Includes design from Nov 1, 2001 as well as other WIP sprites, of which the top center design has a corrupted palette. Theoretically, given there are multiple palettes in the bitmap, if reordered it's meant to look like this. | |||
Huntail | Includes its design from the March revision. One WIP is missing the head fin. | |||
Gorebyss | Has various sketchy WIP sprites based on the Huntail tail lure. Both have a more wispy tail compared to the final's purple plate-like fin. | |||
Relicanth | Includes its design from Nov 1, 2001, albeit with a now incorrect palette. | |||
Luvdisc | Final front and back view. | |||
Bagon | Arms are thicker and eye lacks a shadow underneath. It has fingers for the paws. This may have been designed later than other Pokémon given how the blue is perceived differently on original hardware, which matches closer to art. | |||
Shelgon | Two alternate designs, one with red coiled antennae (likely implied to become Salamence's wings), and another with stubbier legs and a Bagon-like nose. The back WIP sprite has less detailed shading. | |||
Salamence | Has various earlier designs, one standing upright with a hunched-over pose, and another more flat on the ground with a more cone-like head, shoulder spikes, and rings on its legs. There's also a WIP sprite closer to the final design, only differing in having a plain red belly instead of Shelgon's plates. This may have been designed later than other Pokémon given how the blue is perceived differently on original hardware, which matches closer to art. | |||
Beldum | Alternate design that more closely resembles a dumbbell. The WIP back sprite of this earlier design scales up the front, then flips and tweaks. Uses Latios for base palette. | |||
Metang | Alternate design resembling a crab, using Latios for base for palette. Back WIP sprite of this design is fairly rough for outline. The earlier design of Metagross from its scratchpad is also present. | |||
Metagross | Earlier design lacks defined color areas for the "X" on its maw, as well as having teeth fused to its face instead of distinct ones. Uses Latios for base palette. | |||
Regirock | Has various unfinished WIP sprites for front and back, with fewer orange spots and differences in rock shape. Despite the body shape not matching the official art, this wasn't further updated for final. | |||
Regice | Front and back view have less shading in WIP sprites, and the WIP back sprite is missing its back spines. | |||
Registeel | Unfinished back view. | |||
Latias | Has sprites from November 2001. | |||
Latios | Has final sprites. | |||
Kyogre | Has various WIP sprites alongside copies of early Metang, Metagross, and Latios. Used Latios as basis for palette, which corrects most of the WIP sprites. Seems to initially have had a white-tipped tail, and red veins for its arms lack the circular pattern seen in final. Besides this, there's a rough back sprite that is redrawn for final. | |||
Groudon | Head and arms were redrawn, legs were given more defined kneecaps and pointier toes, tail was made longer and had a third spike added to its side. Seemed to use Latios as a base for palette before overwriting. | |||
Rayquaza | WIP sprites, mostly tweaking the shading, though earlier designs lack the glowing symbols and some fins. | |||
Jirachi | Early design plays with the concept of wrapping its appendages around itself like a cloth while sleeping, a pose which would go on to reappear in various other Pokémon media down the line. | |||
Deoxys | Has WIP sprites for the final pose, as well as a legless design, and flipped hand sprite for back. Interestingly has 4 fingers, which wasn't edited for final. |
Generation 3 (Cut)
In r991 are five scratchpads for Pokémon that were present in the November 1st, 2001 data, but were ultimately cut.
Oddly enough, they all incorrectly use Camerupt's palette, except for 332, which uses Breloom's palette instead.
