Early Japanese Star Names

Cacti speak Japanese.
...But what does it mean?
This game has text or audio that needs to be translated. If you are fluent with this language, please read our translation guidelines and then submit a translation!

File:map/select/selectShape/star_name.h

This was accidentally included in map/select/selectShape along with other early menu-related files; the text is dated to April 25th according to a header. Around half of all stars had different names at this time. The internal star number is listed next to each of the aforementioned stars, and only stars with different names are included below. The original file was already converted to hex values; below is the converted one along with the final names. The early Japanese name for Footrace with Koopa the Quick was actually used in 96 B-Roll. This is dated sometime after 96 B-Roll; however, all of the stars seen in the footage match this file.

11 たいほうで ぶっこわせ!

10 Stone to the birdcage

11 Crush it with a cannon!

Both of the new titles are more specific. Many of the new names here are a bit more specific than their previous forms. 10 appears to reference the star on the floating island that is seen in Spaceworld and E3.

16 いわのはしらへ ひとっとび

13 Come out, giant eel

14 Treasure of the sea-floor cave

15 Red coins on the floating ship

16 Direct flight to the stone pillar

Oddly, all references to pirates were changed. Also, it seems that they were using the term "8 coins" in many star names rather than "red coins."

It seems that Dorrie's original Japanese name was Dolphie. Also, the fog maze in this stage's name was changed to something more like "smoke/fume" maze.

Part of the word for "vulture" was changed to Hiragana. Also, the original name for the pyramid star uses the word 中, which could potentially mean "middle," whereas the newer name opts for 内部, which more specifically refers to the internal area of the pyramid.

77 Angry Wiggler

Despite this file being created less than a month before the game was completed, there are several differences between this early list and the final:
  • Star 3’s name implies it would have been collected on the floating island outside the tiny island, where star 4 spawns in the final, meaning the rematch against Koopa the Quick was added late in development.
  • Star 4’s name implies that the star would have been collected on the island in the middle of the water on the tiny island. This might be the same Star placed on said island that exists commented-out in the level script.
  • Neither Star 5 or Star 6 have Wiggler’s name, implying Wiggler was added late in development. The name for Star 6 implies that it would have been collected similarly to the final, albeit without the fight against Wiggler.

"Big Chomp" was changed to "Chain Chomp", and "gates" was changed to "gate".

Early English Dialogue

File:sm64/data/Basic/Font_BAK/Font/

This text, dated sometime before June 4th, was left over due to a backup being made while the translation wasn't finished. It contains unfinished grammar, different jokes, and less overall polish. Stage names and Star names (excluding one) were already finished at this point. The text was already converted to hex and has been manually reconverted back into a readable format.

The earlier text lacks the part mentioning the Bob-omb Buddy's comrades.

Early Final
Thank you, Mario! The Big Bob-omb is nothing but a big dud now! But the battle for the castle has just begun. Other enemies are holding the other Power Stars. If you recover more Stars, you can open new doors. Continue to new worlds!

My Bob-omb Buddies are waiting for you. Be sure to talk to them--they'll set up cannons for you.

Hey, Mario! Is it true that you beat the Big Bob-omb? You're too cool!

You're sure strong, I'll give you that, and you have fast feet...but you're not as fleet as... Koopa the Quick! How about a race to the mountaintop, where the Big Bob-omb was? Whaddya say? When I say "Go," let the race begin!

I'm the Big Bob-omb, king all blasting matter! Nice work, scaling my mountain. I respect your courage, but if you think I'm going to just hand over this Star, you've got another think coming! I'm the Big Bob-omb, lord of all blasting matter, king of ka-booms the world over! How dare you scale my mountain? By what right do you set foot on my imperial mountaintop? You may have eluded my guards, but you'll never escape my grasp... ...and you'll never take away my Power Star. I hereby challenge you, Mario! If you want the Star I hold, you must prove yourself in battle. Can you pick me up from the back and hurl me to this royal turf? I think that you cannot!

Oww! That smarts! You really are strong, even if you aren't so fast. I wish that my troops were more like you. Oh well, here's the Star, as I promised. When you want to see me again, select this Star from the menu. See you later! Whaaa....Whaaat? Can it be that a pipsqueak like you has defused the Bob-omb king???? You might be fast enough to ground me, but you'll have to pick up the pace if you want to take King Bowser by the tail. Methinks my troops could learn a lesson from you! Here is your Star, as I promised, Mario. If you want to see me again, select this Star from the menu. For now, farewell.

Early (40) Final (40)
Keep Out! This means you! I'll never give up my Power Stars! They're very valuable--they were given to me by Bowser himself! I've hidden them, you know, and I'll never tell where. Okay, I'll give you a little hint: Read the Star names at the beginning of the course. --The Big Bob-omb, on the mountaintop No visitors allowed, by decree of the Big Bob-omb I shall never surrender my Stars, for they hold the power of the castle in their glow. They were a gift from Bowser, the Koopa King himself, and they lie well hidden within my realm. Not a whisper of their whereabouts shall leave my lips. Oh, all right, perhaps one hint: Heed the Star names at the beginning of the course. //--The Big Bob-omb
