Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec/Unused Graphics

From The Cutting Room Floor

This is a sub-page of Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec.

Gran Turismo 3 had quite the strange development cycle, meaning that remnants of earlier points (or, more accurately, really late points) of development were inevitably left in. The bulk of these unused leftovers come from the Simulation Mode, in which most of the work on this mode came from later in development.

Hmmm...
To do:
More, more and more. Look into the rest of the gt_mode.xxx.pmb files. Also leftovers from earlier GT3 demos, more Simulation Mode things, etc. This gallery from Thefanman may help.

Go Race Leftovers

A decent amount of early leftovers for the Go Race mode are tucked away in gt_mode.502.pmb.

Notes: Except otherwise mentioned, the final race fliers are from the Japanese version of the game.

Sunday Cup

Early Final
GT3 Sunday Cup Early.png GT3 Sunday Cup Final.png

The differences here are fairly unsubstantial, limited to the two images having slightly different levels of contrast, a larger (and revised) logo for the cup and the repeating text being organized a little better at the very top.

Clubman Cup

Early Final
GT3 Clubman Early.png GT3 Clubman Final.png

The Clubman Cup image is, by far, the most incomplete of the pack of early cup leftovers, with only the logo style finalized by that point.

FF Challenge

Early Final
GT3 FFChallenge Early.png GT3 FFChallenge Final.png

The early image for the FF Challenge is similar in concept to the final one, but obviously different, showcasing a Toyota Altezza (which is an FR car in-game) and some flavor copyright text from Psygnosis' Formula One 99, although mirrored; unmirrored version of the text can also be found in the fliers for Super Special Route 5 Wet event (both the normal and reverse versions). The Gran Turismo League and "Special Event for Beginner" logos were also removed.

FR Challenge

Early Final
GT3 FRChallenge Early.png GT3 FRChallenge Final.png

This early version of the FR Challenge image takes on a different appearance than the final with some flavor text and a relatively simplistic background, compared to the final image, which features a Nissan Silvia drifting, which coincidentally also used as the game over screen in Battle Gear 2.

MR Challenge

Early Final
GT3 MRChallenge Early.png GT3 MRChallenge Final.png

Much like the FF Challenge image, the early MR Challenge image is similar in concept, but not in overall images used within, showcasing, yet again, a Toyota Altezza (again, a FR car), compared to the final game, which showcases a Honda NSX.

4WD Challenge

Early Final
GT3 4WDChallenge Early.png GT3 4WDChallenge Final.png

The 4WD Challenge image is not massively different here, with the most noticeable difference limited to a contrast and color modification. Quite humorously, however, Challenge is misspelled as Challange and the flavor text is sourced straight from the PowerBook G4 page from Apple.

Lightweight K Cup

Early Final
GT3 KCup Early.png GT3 KCup Final.png

While the logo is finalized, not much else is within this early image shown: as a matter of fact, it features... touring motorcycles, for some reason, instead of small Kei-segment cars.

Stars and Stripes

Early Final
GT3 StarsandStripes Early.png GT3 StarsandStripes Final.png

Only the logo font by this point has been decided on, with the rest of the image being really plain. The race logo itself would be redone in a more bombastic style, featuring a bald eagle. Ironically, the final version's background features a real-life image of a JGTC-spec Honda NSX (from the Raybrig/Kunimitsu team), a car of Japanese origin.

Spider and Roadster

Early Final
GT3 Roadster Early.png GT3 Roadster Final.png

The old Spider and Roadster image features a picture of Laguna Seca's Corkscrew section, compared to the final game, which features a 2nd generation Mazda Roadster (or MX-5 Miata, for our American users).

80's Sports Car Cup

Early Final
GT3 80sSports Early.png GT3 80sSports Final.png

Again, only the logo is finalized here, although to be fair, the final image doesn't differ much from the early image shown, either.

Race of NA Sports

Early Final
GT3 NARace Early.png GT3 NARace Final.png

The contrast of the final image is changed slightly and the positioning of the background image is changed dramatically. Otherwise, both of these images are very similar.

Race of Turbo Sports

Early Final
GT3 TurboRace Early.png GT3 TurboRace Final.png

The early image only has the logo for this race series. The final image doesn't deviate much outside of adding a background.

Audi TT Race

Early Final
GT3 TTRace Early.png GT3 TTRace Final.png

These two images are very similar, with differences being limited to the flavor text being changed (in yet another case of mismatched text and intended event, the flavor text appears to be for the Race of Red Emblem, which does not have an early event flyer) due to the mention of Skyline, and the Championship Race label being added to the final image.

Legend of Silver Arrow

Early Final
GT3 SilverArrow Early.png GT3 SilverArrow Final.png

Not too much is changed here, either, with the image losing its saturation, the color temperature being modified, and the "Silver Allow" typo being fixed (although it remains on the small selection icon in the final game).

Altezza Race

Early Final
GT3 AltezzaRace Early.png GT3 AltezzaRace Final.png

The early logo is not much more than large, bold words on a white background. Even the logo doesn't get salvaged into the final race image.

Vitz Race

Early Final
GT3 VitzRace Early.png GT3 VitzRace Final.png

Not much was changed between the two images here, mostly limited to less blue in the background image, the two Vitzes changing colors and the Netz logo's coloring being corrected.

Type R Meeting

Early Final
GT3 TypeRMeeting Early.png GT3 TypeRMeeting Final.png

Not much has changed here, either, with the primary differences of a larger logo and different levels of contrast being the main things to separate the Type R Meeting images.

Evolution Meeting

Early Final
GT3 EvoMeeting Early.png GT3 EvoMeeting Final.png

The logo is about the only thing that remains from these two images, but even that doesn't go unscathed, with the yellow Meeting text being changed into a dark blue. More notably, the background image of a Nissan Skyline is replaced by a collage of various Lancer Evolutions.

Beetle Cup

Early Final
GT3 BeetleCup Early.png GT3 BeetleCup Final.png

The differences here are extremely limited, the only ones of which primarily concern a change of contrast, a change of the Volkswagen logo and the removal of the Beetle 2.0 text below the Beetle Cup logo.

Car Dealership Leftovers

The aesthetic appearance of the Car Dealership was being worked on until the bitter end, if any of these unused images are to show for it.

Main Menu

The main menu of the Car Dealership itself saw its fair share of changes, namely a completely different menu background. For posterity's sake, both the main background image and the top layer used to show manufacturer "fliers", as the game calls them, are shown here.

Manufacturer Fliers

Unsurprisingly, if main menu images are left in the game, so are early manufacturer fliers... all of which are just logos, rather than the stylized images of flagship cars in the final game.

Car Fliers

The cycle continues with early car-specific fliers, all of which have the car in the same two angles. Here's the Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT-Apex (complete with an early license plate design that eventually reappeared in GT Sport!)...
