PaRappa the Rapper is a near-direct port of the original PlayStation game for the PSP. There's widescreen for a broader field of view and some alternate versions of the stages' songs that were able to be downloaded to the system via a special website, but otherwise it's as faithful as they come.

It was later ported to the PS4 as a "remaster" to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the PS1 game's release.

A startup script is in cmp.img with debugging options. Changing these values seems to have no effect on the game, so it may be leftover from something else and has no functionality otherwise.

Regional Differences

Credits

  • The teaser for PaRappa the Rapper 2 during the end credits is present in the Japanese version, but was cut internationally.

Revisional Differences

In 2017, a remastered port of this version was released for the PlayStation 4, starting with a free demo in December 2016 to celebrate the game's 20th Anniversary.

This demo begins with a special title screen, which lacks the "MENU" option due to only including the first stage, and ends with a special end screen not seen in the final game.

Version Differences

  • The game runs the original, untouched PSP ROM inside a PSP emulator, which implements new functionality through Lua script patches. Interestingly enough, this is the exact same approach used by Super Mario 3D All-Stars and Nintendo Switch Online.
  • Two new features were added: "Feel the beat" (vibration support during gameplay) and "See the beat" (larger character icon on the rhythm bar). These options replace the Ad-hoc and Game Sharing menu options respectively. Also, the Download menu option is replaced with a Help option, which displays an in-game manual.
  • All of the DLC songs from the PSP release are in the settings by default.
  • The graphics are upscaled to 4K resolution, replacing the original textures with high-resolution versions. Some patches were applied to fix misalignments not visible in the original resolution.
    • The input icons for the L and R buttons were changed to L1 and R1 to reflect the PS4's controller.
  • PaRappa's audio clips are replaced with high-quality versions.
  • PaRappa's voice in-game was made much louder compared to the previous releases.
  • Like other PS4 titles, the player can now earn Trophies for doing tasks within the game.
  • The input window has been increased to allow for less precise inputs to account for the increased input lag of modern displays versus CRTs, up to 10 frames. The increased window would enable the player to spam in Cool mode and not drop down to Good. However, this change is not applied to Stage 4. The input window in the original PS1 version was 8 frames; in the PSP version, it was much stricter at 7 frames.
  • In the intro cutscene the word "Frosty" is muted out in the North American release due to it being a trademark of Wendy's. But funnily enough, just before PJ Berri orders it's briefly visible on the menu.

Oddly, the subtitle removes the entire second order for PJ.

  • The shadow behind PaRappa in the title screen has correct alpha blending, removing the white fringe around his hands that was visible in both the PS1 and PSP versions.
  • The lights in Chop Chop Master Onion's dojo have been restored as in the Japanese original.
  • A visual error in one of Cheep Cheep's lines was fixed. The second instance of "Put the cake in the oven for a while" was actually evaluating the same input placement as the first instance before.
  • Texture glitches are present in Stages 5 and 6. The rain textures struggle to work in Stage 5, and texture boxes are more apparent in Stage 6’s BAD and AWFUL modes.
  • The fade-out at the end of Stage 6 is missing.
  • The reverb effect in PaRappa's lines in Stage 6 was toned down a bit.
