Animation Reel Differences

An animation reel by character animator Omaikel Alfaro shows us a lot of differences, both major and minor.

Video Notes
This scene depicts Clementine falling into the river after her scuffle with Winston and the scavengers in the forest, except this time Winston rushes both himself and Clem into the river. The close-up on Winston losing his footing on the rock may imply that it was accidental, but filenames for this animation left in the final game imply that it was indeed deliberate. This also implies that Winston would survive the walkers in the forest, if there were any to begin with, and was at least still alive up until falling into the river with Clementine. It's unknown if his fate was meant to be much different after this point.
This scene depicts Luke and Nick carrying Pete after he gets bitten. Notably, both Nick and Luke still use their earlier models here. Luke wore a hat, which was later given to Nick, while Nick's hair was more similar to Luke's in the final game, and his shirt was a lot more blue than black. This is also how their concept art depicts them. Based on the fact that Luke is present when Pete is bit, it's very likely that this animation dates from when the fishing scene was still intended to end out the episode.
This scene shows Clementine fighting the walker when she's locked inside of the shed by the cabin group. However, there are some interesting details to note. First off, Clementine's model. She has darker skin and Lee's blood is present on her hat, showing that this animation was made quite late in development, as all the other early animations shown, as well as concept art show Clementine lacking these details. Also, in the final game, Clementine stabs the walker twice with the broken wood piece, with the second stab ending with the walker getting impaled by the anchor. However, here, Clementine seemingly corales the walker near the anchor instead.
A scene of Luke stopping Clementine trying to get out of the cabin. Seemingly implying that Luke was supposed to catch Clementine snooping around while she's looking to patch herself up. Also, both Luke and Clem use their earlier models. In this scene, the front door is also shown to be open, and Clem ignores the door to her right. This is notable as that's how she enters the cabin in the final game. This possibly implies she was meant to enter through the front door originally.

Early Episode Dioramas

Early versions of the Episode Select dioramas. These come from a website that had the portfolio of one of the UI designers for Season 2 on it, which has since been removed.

Episode 1: All That Remains

Early Final
Telltale Walking Dead Season Two EP1 Beta Diorama.png Telltale Walking Dead Season Two EP1 Diorama.png

Unlike episodes three and four, All That Remains never had its diorama changed throughout the releases of the other episodes, and the same can be said for episodes two and five. In the earlier diorama, Clementine has more blood seeping out of her arm than in the final version. It's been speculated that this is because she would have been shot by Winston instead of getting bitten by Sam. This is also implied by the position she is holding her arm in. It's also worth mentioning that she looks more angry and determined in the early diorama, rather than the afraid and helpless look she has in the final version.

Episode 2: A House Divided

Early Final
Telltale walking dead Season two EP2 beta diorama.png Telltale Walking Dead Season Two EP2 diorama.png

This episode was originally named Don't Look Back, rather than A House Divided. This can also still be seen in unused files found in the PS3 version. Besides the different name, this diorama arguably saw the least amount of overall changes, as everything essentially remained the same, only their positions were altered. With Troy, who was originally used to represent Carver as a placeholder, now appearing much closer to the camera, Johnny appearing to the right of him instead of to the left, and the sky, treeline, and ski lift being framed a lot lower. It is noteworthy, however, that even in the earlier image, Johnny is already used to represent Carver's group, despite concept art showing he wasn't originally meant to be a part of them.

Episode 3: In Harm's Way

Hmmm...
To do:
Replace the earliest image with a rip that's less... terrible.
Earliest Later Final
Telltale the walking dead Season 2 EP3 Beta Diorama.png The Walking Dead Season Two Telltale EP3 Screen Unpatched.png The Walking Dead Season Two Telltale EP3 Screen Patched.png

This episode was originally named In Cold Blood. The earliest version has no distinguishable background, but it does feature a prominent shadow looming over Clementine and Rebecca. It's unknown if this shadow is supposed to represent anything or anyone specific, if it's meant to be purely symbolic, or if it even has any significance at all. The second screen was in use up until the actual release of episode 3, at which point it was replaced with the third variant. It originally depicted the truck stop bathroom. This version also features a prison bar overlay, which seems more overtly symbolic this time. The final variant removed the overlay completely, and now depicts Clem and Rebecca inside of Howe's Hardware.

Episode 4: Amid The Ruins

Hmmm...
To do:
The PS3 European version shown here isn't quite right, as it doesn't contain the UI elements the others do, in the same vein, the earliest image is something else too, as the blood texture normally doesn't look like that. Fix this.

PS3 European Version Second PS3 European Version
Telltale Walking Dead EP4 Ps3 Euopean Diorama .png Telltale Walking Dead second European Version (Vince Silhouette).png

The diorama for Amid The Ruins was changed a total of four times, a record amount the series would never reach again. All of these screens have subtle differences. The earliest version most closely resembles the European PS3 version, however, the early version is generally brighter, more zoomed out, and contains a Kenny-looking silhouette to the left of Clementine, rather than a Vince-looking one. The final version was originally seen on PC and iOS, and it always remained the same on PC. The PS3 versions use an earlier face texture for Clementine (affecting both her actual face as well as the blood she smears), and have blood on her palms as well. The second PS3 version also has a completely different Clementine pose compared to the first; this pose would be kept for the final release, however. By the time this episode was released, all the dioramas were updated to be the same across the board, and only feature the finalized image. Despite all the changes, Eddie from the 400 Days DLC, always remained present and visible on the slide. He appears as the hooded rightmost figure, despite not actually appearing in the episode, or the season, for that matter. The Vince silhouette-diorama isn't PS3-exclusive, it is also present in the free version of the Xbox 360 version.

Episode 5: No Going Back

Early Final
Telltale Walking Dead Season Two EP5 Beta Diorama.png Telltale Walking Dead Season Two EP5 Diorama.png

This episode was originally named Better to Sleep. On the early version, you can see the silhouette of Clementine walking into the distance, and she appears to be holding AJ with her left arm. This seems to be a depiction of a removed ending where Clementine and AJ would get trapped in a blizzard in whiteout conditions, and Clementine had the choice to either stay with AJ, almost guaranteeing them to die together in the blizzard. Or they could leave AJ behind, ensuring his death so that Clementine could make it. On a lighter note, someone misspelled "soon" as "sooon" in the earlier image.

Concept Art

Concept art for Season Two was done by Lead Concept Artist Jesse Maccabe, as well as Molly Denmark, Molly Maloney, Gray Rogers, and Derek Stratton.

Jesse Maccabe

These artworks are all confirmed to have been made by Maccabe, as they're sourced from his personal ArtStation account.

TWDS2 jesse-maccabe-wd201-clem-christa-v1.jpg jesse-maccabe-wd201-clem-christa-v1.jpg Jesse describes this as a "very early mood piece". It depicts Clementine and Christa sitting in the rain before they were attacked by the scavengers. Notably, it's actually shown raining, unlike the final game, where no rain is shown (until the Definitive Series altered this.) It also shows Clementine wearing a jacket, which she lacks in the final game.
TWDS2 jesse-maccabe-jessemaccabe-wd2-clementine.jpg jesse-maccabe-jessemaccabe-wd2-clementine.jpg Concept art for Clementine's general design. To the left are four early variations, three of which depict her in a jacket, with only one showing her in a longsleeve. It seems that this longsleeve art was used to make her finalized design. To the right is also art of Clementine in the jacket she gets from Bonnie in Episode 3.
TWDS2 jesse-maccabe-wd2-keyart-devsketchesb.jpg jesse-maccabe-wd2-keyart-devsketchesb.jpg Concept art for the episode's key art. While not one of these appears as a single source for the final key art of the episode, details of multiple would be used and merged to form the finalized picture. The bottom right picture comes closest, as it has a similar layout, with a lot of walkers in the background. The top right picture also includes the cabin in the background, which the key art doesn't have, but the epiosde's promotional poster does. The top right picture is also the only one where Clem gets depicted with a gun, as opposed to the hammer she holds in all the others. Also, in the bottom left and bottom right pictures, Sam is shown accompanying her. The bottom left picture is also the only one that depicts the scavengers spying on Clem.
WDS2 jesse-maccabe-jessemaccabe-wd2-cabinexteriora.jpg jesse-maccabe-jessemaccabe-wd2-cabinexteriora.jpg Exterior of the cabin at which Clementine's new group resides.
WDS2 jesse-maccabe-jessemaccabe-wd2-cabinexteriorb.jpg jesse-maccabe-jessemaccabe-wd2-cabinexteriorb.jpg Exterior of the cabin, in black and gray. Notably, Clementine's silhouette still depicts her wearing a jacket, whereas later concept art depicts her with the longsleeve when silhouetted. This image, along with the one above and two others not uploaded separately, appear in the Definitive Series' concept art gallery under the name Cabin: Exterior.
WDS2 jesse-maccabe-jessemaccabe-wd2-scavengers.jpg jesse-maccabe-jessemaccabe-wd2-scavengers.jpg Character concept art for the scavengers that attack Clementine and Christa in episode 1. This art also depicts Johnny alongside them, showing he was originally a member of these scavengers, rather than Carver's group. This image, alongside two depicting Sam, appear in the Definitive Series' concept art gallery under the name Johnny, Winston, Ralph, Victor, Sam the Dog. Besides Johnny, none of the scavengers ever get named in-game, but they do bear these names in the credits as well as their models, textures and animations.
WDS2 jesse-maccabe-jessemaccabe-wd2-truckstopbathroomexterior.jpg jesse-maccabe-jessemaccabe-wd2-truckstopbathroomexterior.jpg Exterior of the truck stop bathroom in which Omid meets his demise. This piece appears in the Definitive Series' concept art gallery under the name Truck Stop Bathroom.

WDS2 jesse-maccabe-jessemaccabe-wd2-skilodgeornaments.jpg jesse-maccabe-jessemaccabe-wd2-skilodgeornaments.jpg The Christmas ornaments that appear throughout the lodge. Also note Clem's silhouette now wearing a longsleeve.
WDS2 jesse-maccabe-jane3.jpg jesse-maccabe-jane3.jpg Jane, with two different hairstyles. The "B" variant would appear on its own as her artwork in the Definitive Series' concept art gallery.
WDS2 jesse-maccabe-jessemaccabe-wd2-hardwarestoreexteriora.jpg jesse-maccabe-jessemaccabe-wd2-hardwarestoreexteriora.jpg Exterior of Howe's Hardware, Carver's base camp. The bottom two images are just detailed zoom-ins on the top picture. Said top picture appears in the Definitive Series' concept art gallery under the name Hardware Store: Exterior.
WDS2 jesse-maccabe-wd203-hardwarestoreinteriorwarehouse.jpg jesse-maccabe-wd203-hardwarestoreinteriorwarehouse.jpg Interior of Howe's Hardware, showing the warehouse portions. Clementine's and Luke's silhouettes are shown here.
WDS2 jesse-maccabe-wd203-hardwarestoreinteriormain-devsketchd.jpg jesse-maccabe-wd203-hardwarestoreinteriormain-devsketchd.jpg More interior shots of Howe's.
WDS2 jesse-maccabe-jessemaccabe-wd2-hardwarestoreexteriorgreenhouse.jpg jesse-maccabe-jessemaccabe-wd2-hardwarestoreexteriorgreenhouse.jpg Various sketches of the greenhouse on the roof of Howe's.
WDS2 jesse-maccabe-wd203-greenhouseinterior-devsketcha.jpg jesse-maccabe-wd203-greenhouseinterior-devsketcha.jpg The greenhouse's interior. This picture, alongside the color sketch of the greenhouse above and two other pictures, appears in the Definitive Series' concept art gallery under the name Hardware Store: Roof.
WDS2 jesse-maccabe-wd204-civilwarmemorialmuseum.jpg jesse-maccabe-wd204-civilwarmemorialmuseum.jpg The interior and exterior for Parker's Run, the Civil War memorial and museum. To the left is also a sketch of the locked room containing the water jugs. The interior picture appears in the Definitive Series' concept art gallery under the name War Memorial: Museum, while the exterior appears separately under the name War Memorial: Museum Interior.
WDS2 jesse-maccabe-wd2-walkingaway-devsketcha.jpg jesse-maccabe-wd2-walkingaway-devsketcha.jpg A smaller child, presumably Clem, and an adult walking away from a walker corpse. This piece might've been an early sketch for/or might've influenced the Chapter Select image for Episode 5, as it similarly depicts a frozen walker corpse lying in the foreground. The earlier version of this Chapter Select image depicted a sole Clementine walking away on a lonesome snowy road. Unlike this concept art, Clem was clearly depicted as holding something in one arm (presumably AJ). The layout for this piece also mirrors the moment Clem and Kenny decide to leave together after killing Jane. The scene looks almost identical to the piece, sans the walker corpse in the foreground.
WDS2 jesse-maccabe-wd205-snowywoods-devsketch.jpg jesse-maccabe-wd205-snowywoods-devsketch.jpg Snowy woods, one in a warm color palette, and another in a cold palette.
WDS2 jesse-maccabe-wd205-powersubstationmood.jpg jesse-maccabe-wd205-powersubstationmood.jpg A mood piece for the power substation where the group winds up after the shootout with the Russians. This piece appears in the Definitive Series' concept art gallery under the name Power Substation.
WDS2 jesse-maccabe-wd205-frozenpondmood.jpg jesse-maccabe-wd205-frozenpondmood.jpg A mood piece for the frozen lake the group has to cross to reach Arvo's stash house. This piece appears in the Definitive Series' concept art gallery under the name Frozen Pond.
WDS2 jesse-maccabe-wd205-stashhousemood.jpg jesse-maccabe-wd205-stashhousemood.jpg A mood piece for Arvo's stash house.
WDS2 jesse-maccabe-wd205-reststopexteriormood.jpg jesse-maccabe-wd205-reststopexteriormood.jpg A mood piece for the rest stop where the final confrontation between Jane and Kenny takes place.

Derek Stratton

This is the only known piece that can be definitively credited to Stratton, as it's sourced from his personal ArtStation account.

Definitive Series Art

The following pieces of concept art are sourced directly from The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series' concept art gallery:

Art File Name Notes
TWDS2 concept 200CharactersChrista.png concept_200CharactersChrista Multiple sketches of Christa. The leftmost picture is her in the outfit Clementine saw her last in. In the character lineup depicted below, the outfit at one point had a gray top instead. The next picture depicts Christa mourning over a grave, presumably Omid's, since it's quite large for her child's. The next two piece's are close-ups of her face, one in black and white and the other in color. The rightmost picture shows Christa in an outfit she's never seen in in-game. It has her in a thick dark vest over a light longsleeve. This outfit appears remarkably close to one the worn by Vera, a random guard at Howe's, in the final game. The gallery names these pieces collectively as Christa.
TWDS2 concept 200CharactersClementine.png concept_200CharactersClementine Multiple sketches of Clementine. The two leftmost pictures marked A and B appear to be color tests for Clementine's outfit. Palette A would ultimately get used, while B didn't. These drawings of Clementine look remarkable unlike the style of Jesse Maccabe, so they were in all likelihood made by another concept artist, although it isn't known who exactly. The third artwork does belong to Maccabe, as this artwork of Clementine also appears on his portfolio, with the only difference being that his version wears a hat and this one doesn't. The two pictures on the right are also quite interesting. Both appear to depict Clementine meeting the cabin survivors. The top picture depicts them as silhouettes with Clementine, who's clearly losing a lot of blood, looking afraid. The bottom picture is more realistic, but also features a lot of oddities. Firstly, Luke is depicted wearing a hat while Nick isn't, which is based on their early designs. Secondly, Clementine carries a pistol, while Nick is completely unarmed. Clementine normally doesn't have any firearms (or any weapons at all) on her at this point. Also, Clementine is shown with a hairband she normally doesn't have, a long jacket which she also doesn't have, and her backpack which she lost prior to this point in the episode, and she'd only retrieve it at the end. The gallery names these pieces collectively as Clementine.
TWDS2 concept 201CharactersScavengersSam.png concept_201CharactersScavengersSam The scavengers, appearing the same as on Jesse Maccabe's portfolio. Victor is depicted with a duffle bag here, he doesn't carry any kind of bag in the final game. There are also two images for Sam the dog here, one with and one without his collar. Sam is only ever seen with his collar in the final game. Notably, these images depict Sam more like a golden retriever, whereas in the final game he looks more like a Belgian/German shepherd. The gallery names this piece Johnny, Winston, Ralph, Victor, Sam the Dog.
TWDS2 concept 200CharactersLukeNickCarlosSarahAlvinRebecca.png concept_200CharactersLukeNickCarlosSarahAlvinRebecca Uncle Pete appears here with an earlier design, lacking a jacket. His artwork also appears on the character lineup down below, this time finalized. It also has Nick and Luke's earlier designs, featuring Luke with Nick's hat and with longer hair similar to Nick in the final game. Nick, on the other hand, had hair very similar Luke's finalized version. His shirt was more blue than black, and his pants were just brown, rather than camo. The gallery names this piece Pete, Luke, Nick, Carlos, Sarah, Alvin, Rebecca.
TWDS2 concept 200CharactersKennySaritaBonnieCarver.png concept_200CharactersKennySaritaBonnieCarver Bonnie is depicted here as having a top-knot, rather than the ponytail she always wears. Carver is depicted with his earlier design where he's thinner and has a more pronounced mustache. The gallery names this piece Kenny, Sarita, Bonnie, Carver.
TWDS2 concept 200CharactersJaneArvoMatthewWalter.png concept_200CharactersJaneArvoMatthewWalter Jane's art appears identical to a piece from Jesse Maccabe's portfolio. Arvo appears depicted without his leg brace. Matthew appears with a lighter jacket. Walter's sweater is completely different, featuring a diamond pattern. The achievement "Past Midnight" still depicts this earlier look for Walter. Reggie appears depicted with a cane here, he doesn't have one in the final game. The gallery names this piece Jane, Arvo, Matthew, Walter, Reggie.

Episode 1 Character Lineup

In April 2014, the New York Times visited Telltale's offices in order to conduct interviews for an article. Photographer Ramin Rahimian took a very interesting picture there, showcasing the character lineup for episode 1.

Image Notes
WDS 201CharacterLineUp.jpg Notable things about this lineup include:
  • Nick and Luke still have their old designs. Their art was seemingly never updated.
  • Uncle Pete here is depicted with his finalized design. Meanwhile, his artwork in the Definitive Series' concept art gallery is actually an earlier version, where Pete only wore a sweatshirt, without a jacket.
  • Christa's art is also not the finalized version. Here, her jacket is depicted as gray. Her artwork in the Definitive Series' concept art gallery uses this art as a base, but now uses yellow/orange, which is how it appears in the final game.
  • As mentioned above, Johnny is shown as part of the scavengers, which he isn't in the final game. He's also the only character on this lineup that doesn't actually appear in the episode.
  • Omid and Michelle aren't on this lineup because they weren't originally meant to appear in this episode, but rather the next. Episode 1 was meant to start with Christa and Clementine alone in the woods, with the flashback meant for episode 2, as can still be seen in the filenames for Michelle and Omid.
  • The only other named character that appears in the final episode that isn't present on this lineup, is Roman, or at least his corpse. However, the various corpses you encounter at the stream in the final episode were also added way later in development. None of them were originally meant to appear there, as Roman's corpse is the only unique one present, the rest are all reused or retextured corpses from elsewhere. Instead, the episode was originally meant to end with Clementine, Nick, Luke, Pete, and Alvin, all going fishing before Pete would get bit.

Developer Commentary Notes

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series would also go on to include developer commentary alongside its bonuses. Some developers revealed interesting tidbits of which little to nothing else is known.

Episode 1: All That Remains

  • During the commentary for this episode, Lead Designer Stephen McManus would state the following about Pete's original demise:
"There was something actually very interesting about Pete's storyline. Originally, Pete was supposed to make it back to the cabin. [...] There was a thread where you had either told people he was bitten or you had not. And he was in bed, and potentially going to turn, and Clementine had to deal with that. And that was a lot of the space that ended up being filled by the dread of Carver showing up directly. And I believe, at the time, Carver wasn't supposed to show up until the third act. He was just a name that was bandied around. You know, the boogeyman, for most of the story. And we had more "Pete integration" into this part of the story. The question of "Who are we gonna tell?", "Do we keep Pete's secret for a while?", "Is he going to turn, here, at the cabin?" And I think we never expected him to go full zombie. [...] It was a threat, and he finally decided, much like he does in the current iteration, [...] he was going to have a heroic act of staying behind when Carver's people came. "If they show up, I'll deal with them." [...] He was always a decent guy [...] for the group or for Clementine in his last moments."

Assorted Staff/Developer Quotes

Staff/Developer quotes about assorted development moments;

  • Developer Kent Mudle (who was a Cinematic Artist at the time of this Season 2's release, but later became Creative and Cinematic Director at Telltale) had the following to say about episode 1 on his Tumblr:
"201 was one of the must [sic] tumultuous episodes I ever worked on. It was honestly pretty demoralizing, by the time I got to do my final scene (the bit where Clem arrives at the cabin and is put in the shed) I just wanted to be working on anything else. I did Clem arrives on the beach, and it was like, about dragging a boat to make a little shelter for yourself, all gone. I swear you met the dog there in an old version and he hung out with you for multiple scenes before the bite. I did a bit where when Clem fell in the river it was actually interactive, like pushing left and right to avoid rocks. I worked at least a little on that Clem/Christa in the woods scene, probably just the freewalk part. I recall when they added the log to burn instead of one of the two pictures. And that’s only my stuff, the rest of the episode probably has a lot of different horror stories of waste."
  • In an interview done by The Walking Dead Wiki, animator Jessica Brezzo briefly talked about the removed fishing scene:
"There were a lot of things scrapped from the game at one point, there was a whole fishing sequence in episode 1 that got cut. But it had some awesome Alvin lines where he was complaining about holding fish, and some pretty funny Clementine animations where she was trying to grab onto fish and put them in a cooler. [...] Well, similar to that whole fishing bit, the original ending of episode 1 had Luke and Alvin present as well. But we changed it to just be Pete, Nick, and Clem."
  • Jessica also stated the following (in a now-deleted post) on the TTG official forums, in response to changed designs:
"With appearances, no one other than Luke and Nick changed much - originally, they were both brown-haired white dudes, just one had a hat. As production went on, we realized we needed to differentiate them more. Other times characters will change appearance is if we cast a voice actor we like, and then realize their voice doesn't quite fit the model once you start seeing them in game - we had to thicken up Carver for that reason, he was originally a bit thinner."
