This is a sub-page of Proto:Plants vs. Zombies (Windows, Mac OS X).

Hmmm...
To do:
Check for more sequenced music differences.

Hiddenpalace.org logo.png  This prototype is documented on Hidden Palace.

A slightly later build of the game, dated February 17th, 2009, 3 months before release and 2 months after the December 2nd build. At this point, the game now goes by its finalized title, Plants vs. Zombies, though the logo is notably different.

Like the previous build, the game won't open on its own due to attempting to connect to a PopCap beta testing server, which is no longer open to the public. A patched executable is required in order to run the game.

All of these sprites exist in the final game, but are more compressed and have alpha files to go along with them to reduce the size of the game.

An earlier flag animation for Dr. Zomboss, only the final frame is used in game.

Gameplay Differences

  • The ending cinematic (Zombies on Your Lawn) is added to the game.
  • Squash no longer disables his hostile state when the zombie he detects dies in any way or is about to be squashed by another Squash.
  • The Cactus/Cattail spike impact effect was removed.
  • Hovering over the Golden Trophy states:

You're awesome! You've beaten Adventure mode X time(s)!

Audio Differences

Hmmm...
To do:
Polish up this segment, finish it, and possibly rip samples from the instruments from both final and prototype builds.

Music version 0.9.9.1029 is almost complete. The differences lie mainly in the instruments, most of which are borrowed from the 2nd prototype version in December 2008. Some instruments are unfinished, such as part of the drums.

  • Grasswalks and Moongrains are reused from the December 2008 prototype.
  • The instruments still use their Bloom & Doom equivalents, notably the pizzicato and strings, which are identical to those on the 2008 prototype. Most of the other instruments are of slightly lower quality.
  • "Zombies on Your Lawn" is already in its final state.

Early, unfinished credits have been implemented in this build. A few entries have been '???'d out, and the credits themselves are shorter.

  • A completely different formatting of the screen. Most notable is the day roof background and the slimmer, red credits button with a black background behind.

The February 17th build, although using the final name, has a different logo compared to the final game. Like the December 2nd build, the art is also slightly cropped at the bottom to make room for the taller logo.

  • Tree of Wisdom was added, but Intro and Upsell haven't yet, so Squirrel can still be accessed from this menu.
  • The Endless versions of Survival Night, Fog, and Roof now use Vasebreaker thumbnails like in the final game.
