The Taito screen removes the specific branch credit in the English version.

  • The options take a moment to appear in the English version.
  • The title screen is silent in the Japanese version. The English version adds music.
  • A trademark symbol was added to the English version, and the copyright year was updated.

  • By far the most notable change is that the English version adds in the Gravnic levels from the NES port, which are not present in the Japanese version.
  • The password option from the Japanese title screen was moved here.

  • The passwords were cut from 8 characters to 4 in the English version.
  • The vowels, along with Y and the dot/period, were removed from the English version and replaced by the numbers 1-8.
  • The Japanese password screen has music, while the English one is silent.

Gameplay

This shows off the first of the English version's two major gameplay changes: namely that all levels are timed, like in the original arcade game.

Also, the "X" markings in the inventory were moved 1 pixel to the right.

The other major change is that the English version gives a finite number of retries per level.

Using all retries in the English version gives you the option to give up. Doing so results in a Game Over screen, which also includes your password.

  • The Japanese version gives you a password after each cleared stage.
  • Since the English version has timers for the levels, it also has a time bonus.

Sound Test and Music

Hmmm...
To do:
Cover the differences. For example 01-04 are silent. Are the animations used elsewhere normally?

The sound test is accessed the same way as in the Japanese version, but the contents differ. Pressing Start in the English sound test brings up two different animated puzzle pieces.
