This page details one or more prototype versions of Realms of Chaos.

Well, obviously that didn't work.
So very stubbly.
This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion.
Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article?

This prototype was apparently leaked through an external testing team in January 1994, nearly two years before the game's release. Not surprisingly, it's very different from the final.

General Differences

  • Most, if not all, of the art is in 16 colors. The final game uses 256-color palettes.
  • Neither debugging options nor cheats are present.
  • The help file has no pictures.
  • Audio support is limited to Sound Blaster, Adlib, and PC Speaker.
  • The Super Easy and Psycho Warrior difficulties are absent.
  • No setup application included.
  • "Mryaal Realm" is called "Revolt of the Mryaal".
  • Each level is split into three acts.
  • This version uses the same FAST engine as Monster Bash.[1] It's not quite clear whether the final game uses a different engine or whether VGA support was added to the FAST engine.
  • The .DAT archive format used in Monster Bash is also used here, though the unusual number classification system is ignored in favor of normal filename extensions to indicate different file types. The final game uses the standard .lha archive format instead.

UI Differences

The title screen is are completely different. Even the logo, which looks similar between the two, was converted to 256 colors in the final.

Notably, the early title screen is used as a cinematic picture in the final game.

The prototype has the menu in a box, which completely covers up the title screen behind it. The final keeps the title screen somewhat visible.

Nice portraits. This is all you need - no fanciness, just basic functions.

The main menu is completely different.

  • In the prototype, everything is crammed into one menu, making it very irritating in case you want to keep track of how many crystals you have. It does tell you quite a bit about your current stats, though.
  • The final version has the most vital information on-screen and the menu only adds a save function.
