Cactus 2.0!
This article has just been started and needs the article basics added.
Help us out and add them.
This cactus is UNDER CONSTRUCTION
This article is a work in progress.
...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.

When Valve released the SteamVR Performance Test for Steam users to evaluate whether their PCs would be compatible with VR, they built it off of a Steam app ID that just so happened to have a large amount of early Source 2 content hidden within its earliest builds. These early builds (the earliest being made on July 9, 2015) were publicly available to download, until Valve took the Performance Test down from the Steam store in November 2023.

What's particularly notable about this build is the fact that it contains a wealth of Half-Life 3 and Left 4 Dead 3 content hidden within. While most of these projects' models, textures, etc. were not included in the build, a considerable amount of code still remains hidden inside, having fallen under the radar of most of the community for almost a decade.

Hmmm...
To do:

Everything.

  • Take screenshots of all unique models.
  • Upload textures.
  • Look in the game's code to find any interesting game mechanics.
  • Just write more in general.
  • If the information starts to get out of hand, create subpages for each game.
  • The Point Fabrication Discord Server has more information on this topic. (Invite)
  • SteamDB has also documented a lot of their findings.
  • GameRant article What Happened to Left 4 Dead 3? has some tidbits for Left 4 Dead 3 that could use some verification.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

Models

C4

Within The Lab's files, the C4 bomb model made for CS:GO's cinematic trailer can be found. This C4 model generally has more details around it and a larger countdown screen compared to the model used in-game.

Models

GLaDOS's Human Face

TheLabProto GLaDOS Human Face 02.png

Within the files for GLaDOS' model folder exists a model of a creepy looking human face that was removed from the initial releases of The Lab. The face was intended to be paired with glados_model (which was not removed from the final game), and even has its own animation for GLaDOS rolling her eye panel back to show her face. The face itself has morph channels for flexes, which indicates that it would've likely been animated. Nothing is known about why this sequence was made.

Bendy Offices

A near-identical offices model to the one used in the Portal 2 Valentine's Day ad, called "Bendy Offices".

DOTA 2

Models

Heroes

A set of high quality models for the DOTA 2 heroes were included.

International

A set of concept models made for the arena used in DOTA 2's biggest tournament, "The International".

Half-Life

High Poly D0G

A high poly and slightly untextured model of D0G. The model was originally leaked onto 4chan, before being found within the SteamVR Performance Test files. Despite depicting a Half-Life character, there is no indication that it was used for Half-Life 3.
