Proto:Street Fighter Alpha 2 (SNES)/Music Differences

From The Cutting Room Floor
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Tucked into the data of the ROM file is the entire arcade soundtrack, albeit remade with the limitations of the SPC700 sound chip. Not many of the songs are actually used in this build, but regardless, every single song is accounted for – even a handful that didn't make it into the final game! Almost every song that did make it had some tweaks done, too – some minor… some significant.

Note: The hex addresses posted next to each song title are for use with the "music swap" code found on the notes page.

Contents

Used Music

This music is all used and can be encountered in casual, glitchless play.

Stage Themes

Ryu Stage ($01)

Prototype Final

The trailing organ notes were cleaned up and faded out, and the closed hi-hat sample was made quieter.

Adon Stage ($06)

Prototype Final

The flutes at the beginning were given pitch bends to hit the right notes and orchestral hit sample is louder.

Akuma Stage ($0B)

Prototype Final

The final version adds more closed hi-hat taps and a much louder counter-melody from 0:39.33 to the end.

M. Bison Stage ($0C)

Prototype Final

The biggest difference is that the synths were made ever-so-slightly quieter in the final version.

Dan Stage ($0D)

Prototype Final

Quite a few changes were made to this song between versions:

  • The closed hi-hat sample was made quieter, as was the electric piano sample.
  • The second loop of the beginning (0:14.56 to 0:29.13) was given a primary melody at the cost of one of the two backing tracks.
  • Pitch bends were added to the synths from 0:43.69 to 0:58.25.
  • The melody of the final part (0:58.25 to 1:27.38) was adjusted to play in time with the music.

Menu & Event Music

Player Select ($14)

Prototype Final

The only real change, here, is that the accordion is slightly quieter.

Versus ($15)

Prototype Final

There's no discernable difference between these versions.

Stage End ($16)

Prototype Final

As with the "Player Select" tune, the accordion was made slightly quieter, here.

Game Over ($19)

Prototype Final

Strangely, the fading is a little harsher in the final version. A bass slide was added at the end, as well.

Unused Music

Due to the early build of this version, none of these themes are played and they can't be accessed without patch/Action Replay codes.

Stage Themes

Ken Stage ($02)

Prototype Final

The slap bass sample sounds a little quieter, but the strings are definitely quieter. The drums may also be a tiny bit quieter.

Chun-Li Stage ($03)

Prototype Final

Aside from the final version playing about 3.39% slower, there's not a whole lot of difference between these two.

Sagat Stage ($04)

Prototype Final

The closed hi-hat is a tiny bit quieter, but that's about it.

Katana Stage ($05)

Prototype Final

Quite a few minor changes here:

  • The accordion and shamisen are quieter.
  • The background melody from 0:20.09 to 0:27.65 was changed to play sooner.
  • Pitch bends were added to certain flute notes from 0:20.09 to 0:37.10.

Birdie Stage ($07)

Prototype Final

A bunch of minor changes here, too:

  • The whistle and orchestral hit samples are much louder in the final.
  • Pitch bends were added to several whistle notes from 0:07.75 to 0:33.91.
  • The orchestral hit at 0:22.30 was dropped a couple of octaves.
  • The organ sample was made just a little quieter.

Guy Stage ($08)

Prototype Final

The organ notes at the start were cut and the piano, organ, and closed hi-hat samples are all a little quieter.

Charlie Stage ($09)

Prototype Final

The orchestral hit is louder, the open hi-hat is quieter, and the accordion from 0:28.8 to 0:42.36 are played at a lower pitch.

Rose Stage ($0A)

Prototype Final

The organs are much quieter, the closed hi-hat is a bit quieter and the organs from 0:32.05 to 0:38.46 were trimmed and given an echo.

Dhalsim Stage ($0E)

Prototype Final

There doesn't seem to be any discernable difference, this time.

Zangief Stage ($0F)

Prototype Final

The trailing notes at the start were cleaned up and the background strings are a bit quieter. However, in an inversion from the norm, the orchestra hits are actually quieter in the final!

Gen Stage ($10)

Prototype Final

The strings (but not the violin) and organs are a bit quieter, but that's about it.

Rolento Stage ($11)

Prototype Final

The accordion is, overall, a bit quieter and panned farther left and pitch bends were added to the notes at 0:05.935 and 0:07.67.

Sakura Stage ($12)

Prototype Final

Sakura always strives to be better and stronger. Her theme song, however, was already perfected in the prototype.

Sagat vs. Ryu Special Stage ($35)

Prototype Final

The chimes and strings are slightly quieter, and the synchronization of the chimes from 0:37.87 to 1:26.24 was fixed. Additionally, the song has an extra bridge from 1:15.68 to 1:15.99 before looping.

Menu & Event Music

Opening ($13)

Prototype Final

An additional choir voice was added at the beginning, the accordion sample is slightly quieter, and the orchestral hit is a bit louder.

Continue? ($17)

Prototype Final

The early version uses the bass drum sample instead of a snare drum. The final fixes this.

Here Comes a New Challenger! ($18)

Prototype Final

The only differences are minor; the cymbal crash is quieter and the trailing drum sample is shortened.

Ranking (Versus) ($1A)

Prototype Final

The background instrument is set to a higher octave in the final.

Ranking (Arcade) ($1B)

Prototype Final

No discernable difference.

Conversation ($34)

Prototype Final

The echo was toned down. Nothing too fancy.

Sagat vs. Ryu Conversation ($3A)

Prototype Final

A nice little hi-hat track was added to the final mix.

Ending Music

Ryu Ending 1 ($1C)

Prototype Final

Other than the accordion being much quieter, there isn't much difference.

Ken Ending/Ryu Ending 2 ($1E)

Prototype Final

The violins are slightly quieter and the chimes are significantly quieter. There seems to be a bit more fade on the violins, as well.

This song also serves as Ryu's second ending theme, in the final.

Chun-Li Ending ($1F)

Prototype Final

Song slows from 0:19.37 to 0:21.15 before resuming tempo.

Sagat Ending ($20)

Prototype Final

The accordion and chimes are a bit quieter. In fact, almost everything except the bassline sounds at least a little quieter.

Katana Ending ($21)

Prototype Final

The tambourine sounds a little quieter, the flute is a touch quieter, but most importantly, Katana's grunts are a bit more varied in the final version! DO MORE SWIM A SEND!

Adon Ending 1 ($22)

Prototype Final

The background organs of this tiny tune were quieted down a touch.

Birdie Ending/Adon Ending 2 ($24)

Prototype Final

The underlying strums that pop in around 0:08.44 were made a little quieter.

This song also serves as Adon's second ending theme, in the final.

Guy Ending ($25)

Prototype Final

The background instrument is at a higher key and, as always, the accordion is a little quieter.

Charlie Ending ($26)

Prototype Final

The chimes are a little bit quieter on this teeny-tiny tune.

Rose Ending ($27)

Prototype Final

Aside from the chimes, the entire song is slightly quieter.

Akuma Ending 1 ($28)

Prototype Final

The chimes and bassline on this dramatic piece are slightly quieter.

M. Bison Ending ($29)

Prototype Final

An additional low string channel was added and the other strings are a little quieter.

Dan Ending ($2A)

Prototype Final

Unsurprisingly, the accordion was made slightly quieter in the final.

Dhalsim Ending ($2B)

Prototype Final

The sitars seem just a tiny bit softer, as does the bassline. The bassline also got some pitch bends.

Zangief Ending 1 ($2C)

Prototype Final

The bassline was changed to match Zangief's stage theme and the strings are slightly quieter.

Gen Ending 1 ($2D)

Prototype Final

Some chimes were added in the background. An "initialization chime" was also added at the start, oddly enough. The bassline may also be just a tiny bit quieter.

Rolento Ending ($2F)

Prototype Final

The organs are slightly quieter. That's about it, though.

Also of note, unlike other songs with an ending (Guy, Sagat, et cetera), this one comes with its own built in fade-out!

Sakura Ending 2 ($30)

Prototype Final

The accordion is quieter.

Staff Roll 1/Sakura Ending 1 ($32)

Prototype Final

The strings are quieter and… a very interesting (and all-original) bit of instrumentation was removed from 0:16.93 to 0:32.77!

This song also serves as Sakura's first ending theme, in the final. (Staff Roll 2 is her credits theme, incidentally.)

Staff Roll 2 ($33)

Prototype Final

In the final game, the strings and background chimes of this long, peaceful tune are a little quieter.

Staff Roll 3 ($39)

Prototype Final

The background strings, accordion, and organs were all made slightly quieter. It was kind of the trend with these songs.

Music Unused in Final

Hmmm...
To do:
See if these exist in the final version and, of course, get rips of 'em!

While almost every song from the arcade version made it into the final version of the game, there were a handful of incidental tunes that didn't.

Replaced Music

These three pieces were replaced by other pieces of music, in the final. Due to each of these being one digit off, it seems likely that their non-use in the final game was just an oversight, but it's also possible these songs were removed to keep the game to 32 Megabits (4 Megabytes).

Ryu Ending 2 ($1D)

Prototype

Replaced by "Ken Ending" ($1E) in the final.

Adon Ending 2 ($23)

Prototype

Replaced by "Birdie Ending" ($24) in the final.

Sakura Ending 1 ($31)

Prototype

Replaced by "Staff Roll 1" ($32) in the final.

Completely Unused Music

The triggers for these second ending themes were removed from their respective endings due to said endings being modified – again, likely to save space.

Gen Ending 2 ($2E)

Prototype

Charlie Ending 2 ($36)

Akuma Ending 2 ($37)

Zangief Ending 2 ($38)
