Rust is a survival game made by Facepunch Studios. The only aim in Rust is to survive. Everything wants you to die - the island’s wildlife and other inhabitants, the environment, other survivors. Do whatever it takes to last another night. Rust can be a very cruel game. You win some, you lose it all, and that's what makes it very compelling for its genre.
This game is still under active development. Be aware that any unused content you find may become used or removed in the future. Please only add things to the article that are unlikely to ever be used, or went unused for some time. If they do get used, please remove them from the page and specify in the edit summary! |
To do: There is still a LOT to do. Clean this page up wherever possible, add section for unused entities in the base game, dig through the game files for unused models, textures, etc. Also dig through earlier Rust clients for other unused content that may no longer exist in the current release. Dig through devblogs too. |

Unobtainable/Unused Weapons
To do: Remove the SKS whenever it releases given how complete it already is. |
SKS
Located under the Weapons tab in the F1 Items menu is a fully functional reskin of the Semi-Automatic Rifle, even down to the materials you get when you recycle it. The SKS has no crafting recipe and cannot accept skins.
Unobtainable/Unused Items
There are an alarming amount of leftovers and generally unused items left over in the main game. While most of these items are completely unobtainable in normal gameplay, almost all of these items are obtainable by admins through the F1 spawn menu.
Door Closer
Auotmatically closes your doors when left open [sic].
Located under the Construction tab in the F1 Items menu, the Door Closer is a unique deployable that can only be placed on doors. Like its name suggests, it will close the door it's placed on after about 5 seconds. It can also be additionally recycled for 30 Metal Fragments and a chance at a Metal Spring.
Mining Quarry
Extracts minerals from the ground. Use a Survey Charge to determine the amount of minerals available for extraction in any given area.
Located under the Construction tab in the F1 Items menu, the Mining Quarry is a surprisingly finished deployable that requires usage of the similarly unused Survey Charge tool in order to deploy into the world. Once deployed in a suitable spot and fed Diesel Fuel, the quarry will begin to produce an infinite amount of the associated resource(s) of the biome it's placed in, so long as it is constantly fed fuel.
It should be noted that while the quarry itself is used in-game in the various quarry monuments as an indestructible object, the deployable found in the F1 menu alongside with its unique placement system go completely unused, with the blueprint and crafting recipes for both the Mining Quarry and Survey Charge being completely removed around December 5th, 2017 for "balancing reasons."
Pump Jack
Extracts oil from the ground. Use a Survey Charge to determine the amount of oil available for extraction in any given area.
Located under the Construction tab in the F1 Items menu alongside the Mining Quarry, the Pump Jack is another deployable with similar functionality to its mining brother. Unlike the Mining Quarry, however, throwing Survey Charges does not seem to produce a suitable oil well no matter where you throw them, making actually deploying it impossible without the usage of console commands.
It should be noted that while the Pump Jack itself is used in-game as an indestructible object located around monuments like Train Yard, the deployable found in the F1 menu alongside with its unique placement system go completely unused, with the blueprint and crafting recipes being completely removed around November 19, 2015 for similar balancing reasons.
Clan Table
While the Clan Table itself is not unused, as it stands the deployable variant located in the Items tab of the F1 menu goes completely unused. It lacks any crafting recipe, but can be recycled into 240 Wood and 240 Metal Fragments.
Paper Map
Helps you figure out where you are. You can annotate the map by right-clicking and drawing on it.
Located strangely within the Items tab of the F1 menu, the Paper Map has been stripped of all functionality rendering it completely useless in the modern Rust client. It was originally the only way to view the Rust island and see where you were going, initially costing a single Paper before being removed completely alongside the Paper component. It also had a built-in fog of war mechanic and you could draw over it to help mark important areas, as the description suggests.
Interestingly enough, despite being completely unobtainable outside of the admin menu, it is one of the few unobtainable items to have a unique model when dropped into the world. This has the unfortunate side effect of making it extremely finicky (and in some cases impossible without console commands) to pick back up due to the model's collision. It can also be additionally recycled into 60 Wood.
Battery - Small
Found underneath the Resources tab in the F1 spawn menu, this battery has no uses whatsoever, not even being recyclable. Interestingly enough, old wiki pages[1] suggest that it was once obtainable through looting airdrops and barrels.
Paper
Paper, a ingredient for Building plan and Note [sic].
Also found underneath the Resources tab in the F1 spawn menu, this item is unique in that it was once required to be crafted in order to create things like Building Plans, Notes, and Paper Maps. It was almost completely gutted in a later update, losing all functionality outside of the ability to be recycled into 3 Wood.
Interestingly enough, this is another one of the few unobtainable items that has a world model when dropped onto the ground.
Research Paper
Use this item in a Research Bench to create blueprints of items.
One of the most interesting items found underneath the Resources tab, this item is a leftover from the completely different and scrapped Blueprint System that Rust once had before ultimately transitioning over to the Component system. Research Paper would have been placed in a Research Bench alongside a valid item to increase the chances of getting a "blueprint" of that item (aka learning how to craft it from scratch) when researching.
All items relating to the Blueprint System excluding this one were ultimately deleted from the game after Rust transitioned away from the Blueprint System, leaving only this as the sole survivor. Regardless, this item still has no functionality whatsoever.
Camera
A camera. Take screenshots with primary fire, zoom in and out with secondary fire, and lock focus with third fire.
Located in the Tools tab when looking through the F1 menu, this is one of the more unique unused items in that it is fully functional, allowing you to take as many in-game screenshots as you want. As the description suggests, left clicking will take a screenshot, holding right click and dragging will allow you to zoom in and out a short distance, and scrolling with the scroll wheel will allow you to somewhat control the depth of field.
Interestingly enough, this tool has its own unique world model.
Geiger Counter
A geiger counter used by scientists
Also located underneath the Tools tab whilst looking through the F1 menu, this item is completely nonfunctional outside of the fact it can be recycled into 18 Metal Fragments. While this item is technically used in-game as the tool that scientists patrolling junk piles spawn with, it is completely unobtainable to players without console commands or the F1 menu.
Just like the Camera, this tool also has its own unique world model.
Survey Charge
Use this on the terrain to see what resources are available for mining.
The Survey Charge is a completely unused tool that was initially used for the Mining Quarry and Pump Jack. When both of these deployables were eventually scrapped for balance reasons, the Survey Charge was scrapped alongside them leaving all 3 completely unobtainable in normal gameplay. Interestingly enough, the Survey Charge also doubles as a raiding tool, as it does explosion damage.
Just like the Camera and Geiger Counter, the Survey Charge has its own unique world model.
Blood
Found underneath the Medical tab in the F1 menu, this item is completely useless and was most likely a leftover idea from Legacy, as you need Blood in order to craft medkits to heal.
Rotten Food Items
There are a number of food items underneath the F1 Food tab that are labeled as "rotten" and go completely unused. While their name and icons would suggest that you should avoid these at all costs, most of them ironically give more hydration than their raw counterparts.
Smoke Rocket WIP!!!!
Emits thick, visibility blocking smoke upon impact.
Found under the Ammo tab of the F1 menu, this rocket is almost completely useless as it only does 5 damage to players and emits next to no smoke. It can be recycled for a hefty amount of Gunpowder.
This item has a unique world model, in that it is only visible when you are reloading a Rocket Launcher with Smoke Rocket ammunition.
Bleach
A powerful oxidizing agent. Can be used as a disinfectant.
Found underneath the Components tab in the F1 menu, this item has no uses whatsoever.
Other sources suggest that this was edible at one point in time and would have hurt the player dramatically, however these are unconfirmed and it is currently impossible to eat.
This is one of the few unused items in-game that has a unique world model.
Duct Tape
A versatile adhesive tape reinforced with cloth.
Found underneath the Components tab in the F1 menu, this item also has little to no actual functionality outside of being able to be recycled into another unused component, Glue, and 3 Cloth.
Duct Tape is also another unused item that has its own unique world model.
Glue
Found underneath the Components tab in the F1 menu, similarly to Bleach it has no uses or functionality whatsoever.
Sticks
Also found underneath the Components tab in the F1 menu, these have no functionality whatsoever outside of being able to recycle them for 12 wood each.
Unobtainable/Unused Attire
All of these outfits can be spawned in through the F1 menu, however they are completely unobtainable through normal means in-game.
Scientist Outfits
While all of these outfits are technically used in game on the scientist NPCs that populate various in-game monuments and points of interest, the player versions are not obtainable outside of the F1 spawn menu. All of these outfits share the same resistances, recycle value, and even the same description as the Hazmat Suit, outside of the Heavy Scientist Suit, which strangely has nearly double the bite and triple the explosion protection of the regular Hazmat Suit.
In addition to the scientist outfits, a Gas Mask can also be found that looks identical to the ones the Scientist Outfits all have. It shares the same resistances as a Bucket Helmet.
Jumpsuits
Both of these jumpsuits are technically used in-game for the Tunnel Rats that inhabit the underground train tunnels, however the player item versions are again completely unobtainable outside of the F1 spawn menu. Both outfits share the same resistances as Bone Armor.
Bandit Guard Gear
Another reskin of the Hazmat Suit, sharing the same resistance stats as the Heavy Scientist Suit. While it visually appears to have Heavy Plate Armor, you do not suffer from any of the downsides that it has whatsoever.
Frog Boots
Thank you for playing the game through its early access run. Enjoy these boots made from radiation resistant frog rubber.
These froggy boots were initally part of the five-piece Hazmat set before it was axed entirely in favor of the Hazmat Suit currently in-game. When the game left early access, anyone who played beforehand would be granted the ability to craft these permanently so long as they had the Frog Boots item in their Steam inventory.
While not entirely unobtainable, the initial requirement for obtaining these are no longer able to be met resulting in new players being completely unable to craft or obtain these without help.
Unobtainable Event Items
Most event-exclusive items come around every year during holiday-related months or days, rendering a majority of them used. However, there are still leftover items from years past that have gone completely unused.

Candy Cane
A very old candy cane from 2014
A leftover food item from the very first Christmas/Xmas/Season's Beatings event. All functionality from this item has been stripped, rendering it completely useless in the modern Rust client. Old wiki pages from 2015[2], alongside the item's .json file, suggests that it was once edible.
Holiday-Exclusive Outfits
While these are technically used in-game for the various NPCs that spawn during the holiday events, the actual suits themselves are completely unobtainable by normal means. They all respectively give 10% melee, 5% bite, 15% radiation, and 13% cold protection when worn.
Glowing Eyes
While this is also technically used in-game for the mummies/scarecrows that spawn during Halloween, the clothing item itself is completely unobtainable in normal gameplay.
Equipping these makes the player's eyes glow a bright yellow, as seen above.
A Barrel Costume
A stupid barrel costume, so you can hide like a pro..p
This costume was initially found in Large Loot Bags during the Halloween event, however the loot tables were changed making this now unobtainable.
Equipping the Barrel Costume will slow you down drastically and greatly limit your field of vision, similarly to the Heavy Plate Helmet.
Crate Costume
A sneaky crate costume. Use with a friend to expertly troll other players
This costume was also originally Halloween-exclusive, being found on scarecrows when you killed them. Unfortunately, when the loot tables for scarecrows changed, this item was also made unobtainable.
Just like the Barrel Costume, equipping this will slow you down drastically and greatly limit field of view.
Non-Holiday Unobtainable Event Items
These items were once obtainable through unique, non-holiday related events like the Twitch Drops integration. Since the requirements for these items have long since passed, they now sit completely unobtainable to new players without help from those who already own the associated crafting recipe for them.
Twitch Rivals
While not obtainable directly, these various tags were also in-game shortly during the Twitch Rivals events:
Bizarrely enough, there is also a Super Serum item that gives 500 calories and hydration on top of insane buffs (1000% scrap yield, 400% ore yield, 500% wood yield) for an hour.
