Super Mario Galaxy 2/Unused Mechanics
This is a sub-page of Super Mario Galaxy 2.
Contents
Unused Object Types
There are two unused object types in Super Mario Galaxy 2. They are completely unfunctional, but their files still remain inside map archives. While there are many DebugMovePos objects placed around zones, ChangeObj goes completely unused. Debug, which also appears in Super Mario Galaxy, was most likely used by the developers to access various points in a galaxy through a debug menu or something else.
Type | File | Objects |
---|---|---|
Debug | DebugObjInfo | DebugMovePos |
ChangeObj | ChangeObjInfo | ChangeObj |
Unused Power Star Spawning Methods
The way how power stars spawn is defined in a field called AppearPowerStarObj inside a galaxy's scenario file. There are a few methods that aren't used in the game at all, most of which are leftovers from the first Super Mario Galaxy.
AppearPowerStarObj | Object | Description |
---|---|---|
テレサチーフ | TeresaChief | Boo with Power Star (Deep Dark Galaxy) |
花さか監視[パワースター] | CountFlowerPowerStar | Flower Counter for Power Stars |
音符の妖精 | NoteFairy | Rainbow Notes |
100枚コイン | 100 Purple Coins (no comet) | |
クリスタルケージ[小] | CrystalCageS | Small Crystal |
クリスタルケージ[中] | CrystalCageM | Medium Crystal |
壊れる籠 | BreakableCage | Small Destroyable Glass Cage |
壊れる籠[大] | BreakableCageL | Large Destroyable Glass Cage |
壊れる籠[回転タイプ] | BreakableCageRotate | Rotating Destroyable Glass Cage |
Unused Object Functions
ProductMapObjDataTable is used to create simple objects like rotating platforms or seesaws, where ClassName defines how an object works. Some of these classes are unused in the final game.
ClassName | Description |

EffectObj10x10x10SyncClipping | |

Unused Flags
The sixth entry in the flag table "アイスマリオ初変身" is set when the player collects the Ice Flower for the first time. Since the Ice Flower has been removed from the game, the flag is never set. The flags for the Red Star have been removed.
Horror Powerup State
Please elaborate. Having more detail is always a good thing. |
This needs some investigation. Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page. Specifically: there is timer related code, probably more |
To do: add the original japanese text |
...But what does it mean? This game has text or audio that needs to be translated. If you are fluent with this language, please read our translation guidelines and then submit a translation! Notes: the quoted text below are from google translated |
This power-up state, internally named Horror, is found between "Yoshi" and Cloud".
If the game determines the galaxy is set to the unused "Horror" comet mode, it tries to load a model referenced by the ID 6, but nothing is ever loaded into model slot 6, so the game crashes. But if you load the Bone Mario model (used in the final SMG1 and SMG2 when Mario is electrocuted), the animations it calls fit reasonably well:
Once this state is active, Mario will receive no damage from any outside sources at the cost of an extended stun period after taking damage in the form of his skeleton breaking apart. After a short while, he'll reform. Mashing A while broken apart will speed up this process.
When exposed to an object that emits light, such as GlaringLightArea, Mario's model will switch back to his default one, though the power-up state remains the same. Leaving the area will switch his model back.
Some of the unused NPC/Signboard text seems to relate to the Horror comet, providing some clues as to how it would have worked:
KinokoTowerHorrorZone
The Bone's Curse will kill you! If you get coins, you can live a little longer... Heh, heh, heh!
CMudplanetHorrorZone
If you enter the light, you can return to the original form! Your full health will be restored!
In the final game, there is a similar mechanic in the Speedy Comet missions where the player has to collect timers to prevent Mario dying due to the time running out.
The "とことん楽しむ スーパーマリオギャラクシー2の本" ("Tokoton tanoshimu Super Mario Galaxy 2 no hon") strategy guide contains an interview with the producer, Yoshiaki Koizumi. It it, he mentions a power-up called Bone Mario:

ちなみに、変身の候補には“ホネマリオ“なんていうものもありました。詳しく言えないので、どんな性能だったかな、皆さんのご想像にお任せします(笑)。 | By the way, there had been a candidate for a power-up called "Bone Mario". I can't go into detail, so I'll leave it to everyone's imaginations as to how it worked (laughs). |
