Super Mario Sunshine/Internal Name Oddities

From The Cutting Room Floor
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This is a sub-page of Super Mario Sunshine.

Early Level Name

In stageArc.bin, the Japanese name for Noki Bay is listed as "マーレビレッジ" ("Mare Village") rather than "Mare Bay". Additionally, the flags on top of the seashells in Noki Bay translate to "Mare Village" in the game's fictitious language.

(in-game language: 2CPhoenix)

Spelling Errors in Filenames

The errors are highlighted in bold text.

Delfino Plaza

  • The goop gate object files for Gelato Beach in Delfino Plaza are internally named "05_gate03manma". Mamma Beach is the Japanese name for Gelato Beach, resulting in this being a mistype.

Bianco Hills

  • In Bianco Hills' 6th episode bianco6, the animation for the polluted water is spelled "biawaetrpollution.btk". Oddly, the file name is spelled correctly in bianco7.
  • The mini windmill model and collision files are named "miniwindmilll".

Ricco Harbor

  • The helicopter model and collision files are named "riccohericopter".

Sirena Beach

  • King Boo's slot machine frame is named "srot_waku", translating to "slot frame".
  • King Boo's slot machine reels are named "srotrulet", meaning "slot roulette".

Secret Stages

The starry space background is labelled "b_sters".

Inaccurate Stage Names

Internally, Episodic stages 1-8 are supposed to be labelled as 0-7, with secret stages being numbered, and prefixed with a segment of the stage name. However, as seen in the stageArc.bin, some stages were likely moved around during development, with several secrets stages even being labelled for other worlds.

Delfino Plaza

Delfino Plaza has eight states with different activities: dolpic0, dolpic1, and dolpic5 through dolpic10. This suggests that three Plaza states, dolpic2, dolpic3, and dolpic4 were removed. In test11, there exists every piece of localized text for each area, with dolpic5 being named dolpic345, suggesting that dolpic3 and dolpic4 shared the same text as dolpic5 .

Corona Mountain

Five secret stages are internally prefixed with "coro_ex", ("coro" referring to "Corona"), while the actual Corona Mountain stage is labelled "coro_ex6". Seeing as Corona Mountain was once planned as an episodic stage, this suggests these secret stages were originally planned as Corona Mountain Episodes.

Obscene Filename

Super-Mario-Sunshine-Sandbombbaseshit.png

In Gelato Beach's scene\mapobj folders, the spiral Dune Bud formation is called sandbombbaseshit. Given that the Dune Bud pyramid formation, among others, is called "sandbombbasepyramid"; the spiral formation is not called "SandBombBasesHit" but rather "SandBombBaseShit". This filename makes sense as the Dune Bud's formation is that of a turd. Being that this name is purely internal, the individual who named it was probably confident no one would ever see it... by normal means at least!

Shell Riding Animation

Mario's Blooper surfing animations are named ma_ride_shell and ma_ride_shell_wait. While Mario never rides on any sort of shells in Super Mario Sunshine, he did ride on Koopa Shells in the game's predecessor, Super Mario 64.

Level-Prefixed Objects

Internally, some objects are prefixed with the stage name from which they were likely created, even if they appear in other stages.

  • Wooden logs are called "riccolog", indicating they were created for Ricco Harbor.
  • Metal arrow sign models are named "riccoarrow.bmd", indicating they were created for Ricco Harbor.
  • Water sprinkler water effects are called "EffectPinnaFunsui", indicating they were created for Pinna Park.

Test11 Shine Sprite

Each Shine has their own nickname to differentiate them. The Shine in test11 is named スター (Star in Japanese). This makes sense as Stars were the main collectible in Super Mario 64.

"Red" Blooper Racer

Internally the purple Blooper Racer is referred to as being "red", suggesting the original color of the purple Blooper Racer was red.

Ricco Switch Shine

The fruit machine's fruit spawner in episode 8 of Ricco Harbor is oddly named "riccoSwitchShine".

Chain Chomp's Eye

The name of the big Chain Chomp's pacified eye texture is "N_bwanwan_me_cross", indicating that it was originally meant to be knocked out when dunked in the hot spring. This was likely changed to a sleeping expression to prevent players from thinking they had inadvertently murdered the creature.
