Talk:Altered Beast (Genesis)

I've just noticed that, for some reason, the currently selected option in the "secret" menus seems to be using a different set of letters, which has an inner gradient with one more color than the rest of the text, and thus shows a wrong dark color where it should be. Would this be worth mentioning somewhere?--ICEknight (talk) 20:51, 20 July 2014 (EDT)
Late, but you're not crazy: Juuouki and Altered Beast have different colours in the menus. If the Alex Kidd page can have that mentioned, I think it can go in here. YourElbowGreaseSir (talk) 20:34, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
Unused sounds from the Arcade version
A while ago, I was playing the Genesis version on and off for a couple of days on my Genesis Mini just to see how far I could get into it (FYI my personal best is two credits with only one life lost). After grinding on that game during April and May, I decided to try out the Arcade version (mainly via Sonic's UGC). After getting acquainted with its differences, I noticed that there was a substantial chunk of the sound design not present on the Genesis version. More specifically, when Neff takes away the beast centurion's powers there's a entire swathe of sounds in the Arcade that aren't present in Genesis... or so I thought.
Looking up the TCRF page, I found about the Sound Test code and inbetween sessions used it to listen to the BGM. One thing I've noticed is that in gameplay a large chunk of the BGM seems to go unheard: either the theme lasts too long or there's so much going on in the game that the drum channel literally can't be heard most of the time. You have to go out of your way to not jump or kick or get near the enemies to hear all of the level BGM uninterrupted for many minutes, or even to get the Werewolf form not doing anything for a few minutes to hear the entirety of the beast BGM, which is surprisingly lengthy considering just how soon Neff shows up.
However, by far the strangest discovery I made was when I was poking around in the sound test when... wait, what the hell are the sounds? What are those? There's several metallic and "flat" patches and sounds I never recognized before, but one thing that stood out to me was there's entire sound entries for a sequence of sounds that seem to correspond with the aforementioned Neff endlevel cutscene. The drone, the hissy arpeggio, the noise, it was all there. It just... NEVER plays ingame. At all. I've tried many times to get it to play with various combos of having the Werewolf or Dragon doing something or positioned somewhere, and it just never plays.
The only thing I'm stumped on is the other sounds. After grinding through this game, I can't say for certain *what* sounds are unused and what are actually used. There's several sounds in the game that get cut off or don't play when they should except in the most random of times (e.g. the centurion's "boomf" kicks and punches), so there's a chance some of those sounds are used but get cut off somehow. If there's someone here with more time than I do, can you check if for sure some of the Sound Test entries are unused? Knowing just how jank this game's sound driver is, I'm sure some sounds just get interrupted without getting a chance to fully play.
