Ring Maxima

Okay, I'm gonna finally bring this to light because I now have something to back it up:

I've noticed that the maximum ring scores are very fishy in this game in general, and I think it needs some investigation. Why would the max ring score be different by one ring? Why would the people porting the game even bother? However, I had nothing solid to confirm my odd feelings towards the scores. This video posted on the DC SA2 page hints at it, but I finally found something more concrete.

When I went through and played City Escape to compare the speed of Sonic's descent down the building (DC is faster), I finished the level to completion because why not. On DC, the max ring score came out to be 456. When I did this the first time, the ring score was 436. Alright, maybe I just made a mistake. I played through the level again. This time I got 446. What. Played through again. Got 456. I tried Radical Highway. Got 333 instead of 323.

I played City Escape and Radical Highway on GC. I got a consistent score on City Escape. On Radical Highway however, the ring score was different: 325 as opposed to 335 like I recorded. I know I can make mistakes writing these scores down, but I know I didn't mess up that much. It's just recording a three-digit number.

This made me think: What if the ring count, on both consoles, is generated as the character goes through the level, and the max ring score is based on the total number of rings loaded? This would explain the segment of that video - If rings are loaded outside of the player's reach, then they'll count towards the max score, but can't be collected. And then it also explains my experience with getting inconsistent max ring scores.

If I could get confirmation from someone else about getting an inconsistent max ring score, that'd be awesome. I'll have to take down my max ring score differences on this page if they're just in flux around a certain point (though some of the differences are pretty drastic), or they can be updated with an absolute maximum ring score that would take way too much time to find.

Thoughts? The preceding unsigned comment was added by Spiritix (talk • contribs)

The ring total only accounts for standalone rings in the stage, and doesn't account for rings obtained from item boxes or checkpoints. (I think.) When you get rings from these objects, the amount of rings you got is added to the stage total so you can't just cheat your way to a Perfect. Neo (talk) 10:06, 1 September 2015 (EDT)
Okay, so if I breezed through a stage and didn't get any capsules, I'd have a minimum-max ring score? I'm guessing that includes not getting the checkpoint bonuses as well?-- SpiritixSwampert.gif Spiritix (talk) 15:11, 1 September 2015 (EDT)

Chao Race emblems

As mentioned in the To do, both versions have the same number of emblems (180), but differ in how to obtain a few. The GHZ page states, for the Dreamcast version:

Emblem (エンブレム) -- Like Sonic Adventure 1, Emblems are medals earned for completing various tasks. There are a grueling 180 to obtain: 1 for each successfully completed Mission, 1 for obtaining each character's A ranks, 1 from each ending, 10 from the Chao Races, 3 from the Kart Race minigame, and 3 from the boss attack minigame.

and for the GameCube version:

A few of the 180 Emblems have been redistributed: there are now only 9 to be earned through Chao farming, 4 of which have been shifted from racing to Chao Karate. The missing Emblem has been slapped onto Cannon's Core: ace all 5 Missions to procure it

So in both versions 170 Emblems are obtained the same way (155 from mission completion (5 from each of 31 levels), 6 A-rank rewards, 3 endings, 3 kart races, and 3 boss attacks). 10 Emblems are in disparity.

In the GameCube version, there are 5 Chao Race emblems, 4 Chao Karate emblems, and 1 Cannon's Core A-rank emblem. The latter is self-explanatory, but the Chao ones are explained by a GameFAQ:

[A]fter you complete a circuit of chao races, your chao will earn a medal, and you will earn an emblem.
For winning a [karate] tournament, your chao will get a karate rank increase (in the Medical Chart), and you will earn another emblem.

There are 5 series of Chao Races (Beginner, Jewel, Challenge, Hero, Dark) and 4 tournaments for Chao Karate (Beginner, Standard, Expert, Super), so it sounds like clearing a particular series/tournament awards 1 emblem.

The Dreamcast version all 10 emblems are from Chao Race. But I don't know how they are awarded and can't seem to find any information on it. Does each of the 6 Jewel races award one individually? Do the "levels" mentioned by the Sonic Retro page have anything to do with it? -FZeroTV (talk) 20:18, 5 September 2015 (EDT)

Thanks very much for finding out where those emblems go. It is a rather difficult task to find out exactly where the disparity comes in, and school started for me so I haven't been able to get into it. I can't check at the moment, but I'll figure it out when I can. Now that I think about it, I could've just compared the emblem results screen of both versions... Not my brightest moment... But anyway, yes, it'll be a matter of figuring out how they're distributed in the Chao Races on DC. -- SpiritixSwampert.gif Spiritix (talk) 22:16, 5 September 2015 (EDT)
