Apology + Discovery
Hi, first thing first, I'd like to apologize for something.
About a year or two ago I signed up an account on here and edited this page with some information I had discovered regarding unused areas in the Multiplayer Maps, Unused music, a test cutscene & unseeable character details during briefing cutscenes.
I didn't discuss any of this stuff with anybody prior to editing, and in retrospect I should have done so before typing a single new line on this page.
I've been reading articles on TCRF for years and I got really excited by the thought of finally being able to contribute to the site with some information I had discovered regarding one of my favorite games.
While my intentions where good I can see now that I went about things the wrong way, and I really should have contacted someone else on the site before I edited any pages.
I'm really sorry. if I ever contribute anything else to TCRF, I'll be sure to get in touch with someone else before hand, or at the very least make a post on the discussion tab for the page I'd like to contribute to first.
With that being said, I think I've found something pretty interesting!
A while back I was trying to rip Assault's audio files (Sound Effects, Character Dialogue, Etc.) which is what lead me to finding a lot of the stuff listed above.
While I was successful in acquiring the game's music, and background audio from cutscenes, I wasn't able to figure out where the rest of the audio was stored, or even how to access the files if I had unknowingly found them, so I decided to turn to the internet to see if anyone else had found anything. (I had previously tried The Sounds Resource but they unfortunately didn't have anything I was looking for)
My search lead me to a Google Document that, to my amazement, contained a spreadsheet of every in game sound effect, Including character dialogue!
The document even includes descriptions of all the sounds and transcripts of all the English dialogue (there's also some Japanese dialogue that isn't transcribed). it also lists what lines are said by which characters and what the context of each line is (such as, if it's said during a briefing scene or a mission)
if you'd like to check it out for yourself, you can find it here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1QMK8pJs3ZgFFuoy5y4U-jFw3n6itYhUTZzhprZArSP8/edit#gid=0
just be warned it's a bit of a daunting spreadsheet as it contains nearly 3300 entries.
Now then, on to the real "Meat & Potatoes" of what I found:
Starting at entry #3189 we find the audio used for the playable characters in Multiplayer mode and at this point, I think I've found some unused audio.
Entry Number | Character | Dialogue |
---|---|---|
3196 | Fox | "Darn!" |
3208 | Falco | "Man, that stinks!" |
3221 | Krystal | "That's terrible." |
3234 | Slippy | "oh shoot!" |
3427 | Peppy | "My oh my." |
3260 | Wolf | "That was a waste of my time!" |
To my knowledge (and I'd like to think I know this game REALLY well), none of these voice clips are used.
They sounds like they'd be used on the Victory screen at the end of a match for when a character's lost, but only the character that's actually won will say anything (everyone else will just assume a losing stance)
"But wait, there's more!"
Starting from entry #3266 we find the audio for the in game announcer.
Now normally the announcer is only heard ONCE per multiplayer game, and that's when he counts down the beginning of the match.
Despite this, the announcer (referred to as "Narrator" in the spreadsheet) has a total of 16 voice clips, with only four of them ever being used!
(The four used clips being "Three" "two" "one" & "GO!")
During gameplay the announcer never compliments the player or congratulates them, so the existence of these clips is pretty odd.
The "____ wins!" voice clips have some pretty obvious application, but ones like "Nice work, Fox!"(Etc.) are kind of vague.
While it's only speculation, I'm guessing they would have been used for when the player scores a point with each respective character.
At the very bottom of the Spreadsheet there are 12 files listed as being from the E3 Demo, and what do ya' know, they actually match up with the temporary Dialogue used for the E3 build!

Lemme' tell ya', that's some Quality voice acting right there.
Keep in mind that this is just scratching the surface of the spreadsheet, there could very well be a lot more unused dialogue and even unused sound effects mixed in here.
I simply haven't had the time to go through the whole thing to find out.
Now then, unforuntetly, I still have no clue of how to access any of Assault's Audio Data (Outside of Music and Cutscene Background Audio) straight from it's .ISO.
So, as incredibly likely as it is, there's no way for me to verify that any of this is actually on the game's disc.
But for anyone who does know how Gamecube file compression/decompression works, I highly recommend looking into this because it might just be an untapped gold-mine of unused content!
Well, thanks for reading. and have a nice day. :) --NintenMessenger (talk) 15:23, 20 January 2020 (EST)
