This is a sub-page of The Secret of Monkey Island (DOS, Mac OS Classic).

Not counting the Special Edition, there are three versions:

  • EGA 16-color floppy disk version, released in October 1990
  • VGA 256-color floppy disk version, released in December 1990
  • CD-ROM, released in 1992
Hmmm...
To do:
Add missing images.

  • The HUD was completely redone for the CD version. The commands Walk to, Turn on, and Turn off have been removed and items now show up as graphical icons instead of text.
  • Brightness has been tweaked: Guybrush is brighter in the CD version, and certain objects and other characters have been either brightened or darkened.

  • Dialogue options have been moved one pixel to the right to avoid clipping the left side of the screen.
  • The width of the space character has also been reduced.

  • The entrace to the right looks different between all three versions.
  • Only on the CD version, the three pirate leaders have their hands on top of the table along with mugs of grog.

  • The puddle of grog on the floor is purple on the EGA & VGA versions, but green on the CD version.
  • The hunk of meat looks different between the Floppy Disk versions and the CD version.

Town Area

EGA Monkey1 TownArea EGA.png
CD Monkey1 TownArea CD v2.png
  • On the VGA & CD versions of this room, there is an object for the deadly piranha-poodles next to the mansion that you can hover your mouse cursor over. You can still only use the meat with condiment on them on the close-up screen. After the poodles turn into sleeping piranha-poodles on the close-up screen, they will still be named deadly piranha-poodles on this screen.

Circus

EGA CD
Monkey1 Circus EGA.png Monkey1 Circus CD.png
  • On the EGA & VGA versions, you can show your helmet to the circus men by using verbs Use pot or Give pot to Fettucini Brothers. However, on the CD version, you can only use Give pot to Fettucini Brothers.

Bridge

EGA CD
Monkey1 BridgeTroll EGA.png Monkey1 BridgeTroll CD.png
  • The troll is cyan-colored and has green eyes on the EGA version, but is green-colored and has red eyes on the VGA & CD versions.

Forest

  • The CD version lets you pick a yellow petal only once, whereas the EGA & VGA versions let you pick a yellow petal as long as you don't have one in your inventory.
  • There is a stump that you can use Look at on in order to trigger an Easter Egg on the EGA & VGA versions. Guybrush exclaims there is a hole in the stump leading to a system of catacombs. The game then jokingly prompts you to insert Disk 22, 36, 114, or other numbers. This led to players calling LucasArts' support hotline so much they decided to remove the joke in later versions of the game.

In front of the Mansion

VGA CD
Monkey1 SleepingDogs VGA.png Monkey1 SleepingDogs CD.png
  • After using the meat with condiment on the poodles, there is a text box with a notice saying the poodles are just sleeping. This box is white on the EGA & VGA versions, but blue on the CD version.

Hook Isle Shore

  • On the EGA version, you can Look at map or Use map which causes buggy behavior such as Guybrush teleporting to the beginning of the room or climbing down in midair. The VGA & CD versions fix this by having Guybrush say he doesn't need to look at a map right now.

Hook Isle House

VGA CD
Monkey1 ParrotVerbs Floppy.png Monkey1 ParrotVerbs CD.png
  • The verbs you can use on the "murderous winged devil" were rearranged. "Taunt", "Fondle", "Annoy", "Finger", and "Handle" were removed and replaced with "Jab" and "Tease."
  • On the EGA & VGA versions, you can Look at map or Use map which causes buggy behavior.

If you do it before opening the door to the parrot, the game will replay the dialogue scene as if you freshly entered the room. Guybrush will move to the beginning of the room and his walking animation may not play properly. If you proceed to open the door to the parrot, you may be able to walk around during dialogues in this room.

If you do it after opening the door to the parrot, the game will crash with "ERROR: (63:49:0x14A): Local script 207 is not in room 63!".

On the CD version, Guybrush will say he doesn't need to look at a map right now.

Ship

  • In the bottom room, On the EGA & VGA versions, there is a rapid animation of water leaking in and a sound effect will continuously play. Perhaps because the constant playback of the sound effect was perceived as annoying to the player, the CD version significantly tones down the animation speed and sound effect usage.
  • On the EGA & VGA versions of the Ship's Deck, repeatedly using your rope on the cannon will leave you with smaller versions of rope each time. The giant piece of rope will turn to piece of rope, then small piece of rope, then tiny piece of rope, then dinky piece of rope, then infinitesmally piece of rope.

On the CD version, it will turn to piece of rope and then stay that way. The item sprite will also not change to smaller versions.

Ghost Ship

  • In LeChuck's room, due to a bug, you can Use magnetic compass with key in your inventory. The CD version will then add a duplicate of the key to your inventory. If you keep doing this until you have 76 items, the game crashes with ERROR: (72:202:0x67C5): Inventory full, 80 max items!.

The EGA & VGA versions will not add duplicates of the key to your inventory.

Inventory-related

  • After using Open cake or Use cake, the game removes cake from your inventory and gives you a file. The EGA & VGA versions will have Guybrush exclaim: There's a file in it!.

This exclamation was removed from the CD version, where you can better notice the file you received due to the image sprites.
  • After setting up verb usage Use mug o' grog with and then waiting for the mug to disappear, the EGA & VGA version will still allow you to perform this action, which results in Guybrush saying: I can't reach it.

The CD version will reset your verb when the mug disappears.
  • On the EGA & VGA versions, you can only use verb Look at prize (from the cereal) to reveal it's a key.
On the CD version, you can also use Open or Pick up.
  • On the EGA & VGA versions, you can use Pick up on items in your inventory.

In Part 2, you have to pick up cereal and then Use cereal to receive prize in your inventory. If you then Pick up cereal, the game will remove prize from your inventory, possibly rendering the game unwinnable.

This was fixed in the CD version where you cannot use Pick up on your own items.
  • At the dam on Monkey Island, you can use Look at on the rock in order to find out it's a flint.

The EGA & VGA versions of the game will change its inventory name from noteworthy rock to flint. But the CD version will keep it as noteworthy rock, unless you used Look at on the rock before picking it up.
  • On Monkey Island, if you Use cannonball in your inventory, the EGA version will have Guybrush say: I can't reach it..
The VGA version will have Guybrush say: That doesn't seem to work.
And the CD version will allow using the cannonball with other items.
  • Inside the Monkey Island catacombs, the EGA & VGA versions' inventory will use red-colored text. The CD version's inventory will stay unchanged.
