The Sims (Windows)/Translation Notes/Livin' Large

From The Cutting Room Floor
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This is a sub-page of The Sims (Windows)/Translation Notes.

As the franchise's very first expansion pack, Livin' Large has the minor weirdness of featuring various items of medieval, retro-futuristic and "Vegas" themes without, however, relying on a specific theme, unlike the future packs.

Also, note that, contrary to the sets of strings from the base game, the studied builds of the pack appear to only contain a partial amount of leftover translation comments; most of them are associated with the names and/or descriptions of Buy Mode objects.

3 Musician01: Button Label: Subway Musician (male)
Subway Musician
4 Musician01: Popup: Description: Subway Musician

Notes: the title "subway musician" refers to those street artists who perform in commuter mass transit areas, typically receiving donations or tips for their "services". Communtiy service refers to offering (typically for free) some object or act which contributes to the greater good of the local population.

Simoleans are sparse and the looks from passers-by are harsh, but the hours are great, and isn't adding music to SimCitizens' commutes a community service?
5 Musician02: Button Label: Piano Tuner (male)
Piano Tuner
6 Musician02: Popup: Description: Piano Tuner

Notes: Keeping everyone else is tune refers to maintaining the working order and quality of sound of their pianos. The phrase "a good ear" refers to one's ability to detect whether a piano has been properly tuned without extra instrumentation for assistance.

Keeping everyone else in tune is a good ground-floor "in" for the local music industry. Longer hours, but the work is still relatively easy, though it requires a good ear and plenty of patience.
7 Musician03: Button Label: Wedding Singer (male)
Wedding Singer
8 Musician03: Popup: Description: Wedding Singer

Notes: the title "Wedding Singer" refers to a singer or a band who provides ceremonial and celebratory music for weddings and primarily (in this case) at the reception, or group party, following the marriage ceremony. the phrase "hob-nob" is a colloquial version of the act of socializing.

So much for EVER getting a weekend off - you're the best wedding show in town now, and always busy. The pay is a bit better, and you have to start being more creative, too, but you'll get to hob-nob with the rich and famous while they sip their champagne.
9 Musician04: Button Label: Lounge Singer (male)
Lounge Singer
10 Musician04: Popup: Description: Lounge Singer

Notes: the phrase "day job" is a common reference to the fact that most musicians have music as a second career, in addition to one which fits a few more conservative economic tracks. In this description, day job also refers to the daytime hours worked in the previous job as a wedding singer. "Last call" is a term which refers to the final opportunity for local pub/tavern patrons to order another alcoholic beverage before the restaurant closes. A "patron" is a customer, and stumbling home is a not-so-subtle reference to their inebriated state when they leave the bar.

So, the day job got boring? You'll sleep days now, since you'll be working until the last call is made and the last patron stumbles home from the bar.
11 Musician05: Button Label: High School Band Teacher (male)
High School Band Teacher
12 Musician05: Popup: Description: High School Band Teacher

Notes: "burdens of your trade" are negative aspects of a job that must be tolerated despite their unpleasantness. the reference to the hours reflects that the job hours for this level of this track are the same as the hours of school for the children in The Sims.

Squeaky trumpets, whiny violins, off-tempo timpani, and a constantly-ticking metronome are the burdens of your trade now, but the hours are the same as all the school-aged kids.
13 Musician06: Button Label: Roadie (male)

Notes: a "Roadie" is a person who travels with a band while they are on tour. They typically have to set up stage and sound equipment, and assist the performers with any requested tasks.

Roadie
14 Musician06: Popup: Description: Roadie

Notes: note that the first sentence of this description references the previous job level's description. "Take your act on the road" refers to the fact that roadies are employed by performing groups which are traveling on tour. "Gear" refers to musical and stage equipment. "Making the right contacts" refers to the opportunity one would have to meet people in the music industry whose acquaintance might provide opportunities for career advancement at a later date. "Something cushy" refers to a job or lifestyle that is easy to accomplish, or extremely well-paid, or both.

Time spent tolerating the high-school crowd was worth it - you are now cool enough to take your act on the road - setting up someone else's gear. Long hours are exhausting, but you're having fun and making the right contacts. You will need plenty of body skill to lug around all three amplifiers, but maybe something cushy will present itself soon.
15 Musician07: Button Label: Back-Up Musician (male)

Notes: a back-up musician contributes to the band in performances on stage but not in a soloist or lead capacity.

Back-Up Musician
16 Musician07: Popup: Description: Back-up Musician

Notes: "one the road" refers to the fact that this position requires travel time away from home. "fill in" means to act as a subsitute, typically in a temporary capacity. "make a name for yourself" means to increase the awareness of you and your work in the music community at large, and possibly in the popular media, as well.

Spending time on the road pays off - occasionally, someone in the band you cover quits, and you get to fill in for the remainder of the tour! Dress casual, practice often, play hard, have fun, and start to make a name for yourself.
17 Musician08: Button Label: Studio Musician (male)
Studio Musician
18 Musician08: Popup: Description: Studio Musician

Notes: "Rest for the road-weary" references two meanings; it is a simple play on words to compare to the cliche "no rest for the wicked", and a reference to the previous job worked as a back-up musician traveling on tour. "Album cuts" are pieces of recorded music. "Play your cards right" means making proper social and professional gestures which will contribute to your fame and success. "Schmooze" means socialize, but typically with a hidden agenda (in this case, with an interst only in promoting oneself and one's career).

Rest for the road-weary: you get to play back-up on album cuts in the studio now. Spending time around all the recording label producers and executives is bound to pay off, if you play your cards right. Make sure you schmooze all the right people in addition to delivering a perfect performance every day.
19 Musician09: Button Label: Rock Star (male)
Rock Star
20 Musician09: Popup: Description: Rock Star

Notes: "Congrats" is an abbreviated form of "congratulations". "every teenager's dream" refers to the popular teen's desire to be a Rock Star. "power lunches" are business meetings held through, and including, the noon meal. "Shades" are sunglasses. "people mob you for autographs" refers to large numbers of people who surround you and ask for your signature because they are aware of your fame.

Fame, fortune, tours, parties, and a number-one album! Congrats, you're now living every teenager's dream. Sleep is a rarity, power lunches are common, shades are almost mandatory outside your own home, and people mob you for autographs everywhere you go. Enjoy it!

With all the fame comes a sense of responsibility and a social conscience. Use your fame and power to promote the causes you care most about, be they political, environmental, social, or intellectual. 0 Slacker00: Track Name: Slacker

Notes: "Slacker" is an American phrase which describes a person who is lazy, borderline parasitic, interested in getting as much pay as possible for little to no work, and who tends to make him or herself as agreeable as possible in social situations to promote his or her ability to provide their lifesyle in this manner. While it is not a compliment to call someone a slacker (implies a poor work ethic), this career track may be a desirable state for many young people.

3 Slacker01: Button Label: Golf Caddy (male)

Notes: a golf caddy is a person paid to carry the golf club set of the person playing a round of golf.

Golf Caddy
4 Slacker01: Popup: Description: Golf Caddy

Notes: "round of 18" refers to playing a full 18-hole course of golf. "Schmooze" means socialize, but typically with a hidden agenda (in this case, with an interst only in promoting oneself and one's career). A country club is an exclusive establishment, similar to a gentlemen's hunting club in Europe, but with an emphasis on golfing, dining, and occasionally swimming in indoor and outdoor pools.

Spending your sunny days carrying someone else's clubs for a round of 18 - what could be easier? Early morning tee times call for early work hours, but it's a terrific opportunity to schmooze with the wealthy at the local country club.
5 Slacker02: Button Label: Convenience Store Clerk (male)
Convenience Store Clerk
6 Slacker02: Popup: Description: Convenience Store Clerk

Notes: "soda pop" is a generic term for Coca-Cola-style beverages. The phrase "hang out" refers to standing and idling about, with no definitive purpose.

The customers are considerably less wealthy than those in your last job, but there is plenty of free soda pop and candy bars - not a bad trade. Besides, all your friends can hang out at the store late in the evening and read the comics while you pretend to work.
7 Slacker03: Button Label: Life Guard (male)

8 Slacker03: Popup: Description: Life Guard

Notes: "load up" in this case means to be certain to have extra quantities available of...

9 Slacker04: Button Label: Record Store Clerk (male)
Record Store Clerk
10 Slacker04: Popup: Description: Record Store Clerk

Notes: "Tunes" are songs, musical pieces. "Cushy" refers to the fact that it takes little physical or mental effort to complete the tasks present in this job.

Nothin' but tunes all day long, man... While you'll need to boost your charisma to maintain this cushy job, there's no easier way to get paid to listen to your favorite music all day long.
11 Slacker05: Button Label: Party D.J. (male)

Notes: "D.J." stands for Disc Jockey, and refers to those playing the records or CDs which provide music at an event.

Party D.J.
12 Slacker05: Popup: Description: Party D.J.

Notes: The phrase "paid off" refers to a successful contact. "Spinning tunes" references "old" 33RPM vinyl music records, still in use in this profession.

Those contacts you made at the record store certainly paid off - now you're spinning tunes at the best parties in town. Late nights and lots of mechanical skills are needed to keep those turn tables spinnin'.
13 Slacker06: Button Label: Projectionist (male)
Projectionist
14 Slacker06: Popup: Description: Projectionist

Notes: "tidy little paycheck" is actually a way of referencing a comfortable salary. "night owl" refers to a person who prefers to be awake in the late night hours, rather than sleeping.

Show the finished product to the world, press a button here and there, and presto! - you're not working very hard for that tidy little paycheck, are you? Good thing you're a night owl.
15 Slacker07: Button Label: Video Editor (male)
Video Editor
16 Slacker07: Popup: Description: Video Editor

Notes: a "blunder" is an error or mistake.

The best part of your job? Seeing all the blunders those mega-stars make when filming. Making them look good can help to earn you friends, though you'll want to concentrate on making plenty of them yourself - never hurts to know the right people when you're looking to just be comfortable.
17 Slacker08: Button Label: Freelance Photographer (male)
Freelance Photographer
18 Slacker08: Popup: Description: Freelance Photographer

Notes: "time in the editing room" refers to the previous position as a video editor. "get a good shot" refers to taking good pictures. "Pics" is an abbreviated form of "pictures". "Someone else's dime" means that someone else pays for your expenses. "Free-and-easy" refers to the small amount of work, good salary, and yet comfortable lifestyle in this career. "connections" in this case refers to friends or business acquaintances.

That time in the editing room taught you well - you know how to get a good shot the first time around. Go everywhere, see everything, take gorgeous pics on someone else's dime, and look good doing it. It's a free-and-easy way to live, but requires lots of travel, as well as the connections to finance it.
19 Slacker09: Button Label: Personal Tour Guide (male)
Personal Tour Guide
20 Slacker09: Popup: Description: Personal Tour Guide

Notes: "Earn your keep" means to provide money to pay for your own living expenses. "inner circle" in this instance is an exclusive group of friends who might otherwise not be inclined to welcome those they don't already know and associate with.

The best part about knowing so many people is that you get to use that knowledge to earn your keep. Point out all the best places to newcomers and keep your friends connected to all the great places you visited when you were a lowly photographer. Those who learn the most from you learn to love you best, and may eventually invite into their inner circle.
21 Slacker10: Button Label: Professional Party Guest (male)

Notes: a la Kato Kaelin. Sorry, that's the best example anyone here can come up with. It's also incredibly accurate.

Professional Party Guest
22 Slacker10: Popup: Description: Permanent Party Guest

Notes: "Lap of luxury" means a wealthy lifestyle surrounded by material comforts. "Artificial friends" implies that your closest friends aren't truly emotionally or ethically attached to you, that it's an acquaintance of convenience.

This is it, the ultimate lap of luxury, at no cost to you! Living the good life, partying and living at someone else's house, surrounded by more artificial friends than the best politicians in town. Enjoy it while you can...

3 Paranormal01: Button Label: Psychic Phone Friend (male)

Notes: "Psychic Phone Friend" is a mockery of an American organization called "The Psychic Friends Network". They offer a pay-per-minute phone line which connects the caller with a so-called psychic for an opportunity for fortune-telling. It is widely regarded as a fraudulent, insincere organization which is worthy of derision.

Psychic Phone Friend
4 Paranormal01: Popup: Description: Psychic Phone Friend

Notes: "Knew you were meant for this job before..." is a mild joke about the Sim's supposed ability to see into the future. "warn others of impending disasters..." does the same, in connection with the explanation of the job title above.

You knew you were meant for this job before it was even offered to you. Evening hours, lots of talk on the phone, and the chance to warn others of impending disasters in their lives is just what you're best at doing.
5 Paranormal02: Button Label: Conspiracy Theorist (male)

Notes: this job title refers to a set of beliefs, currently well-publicized, that many disasters and strange occurrences (including UFOs) which are left unexplained to the American public are in fact orchestrated by the US Government, large military corporations, and covert intelligence organizations. It is a set of beliefs with varying degrees of both participation and mockery through the States.

Conspiracy Theorist
6 Paranormal02: Popup: Description: Conspiracy Theorist

Notes: "They're" in the first sentence refers to government organizations, etc., mentioned in the job title notes. "get you" is a way of saying "kill you", or "oppress you". The sentence mentioning the suspicious phone call references a prank call/ chance card in Sims 1.0. "get to the root of" means to uncover the true origin of a thing. The parenthetical phrase "but you know better" again mocks the Sim's supposed ability to foresee the future.

They're out to get you, you just know it. That suspicious warning on the phone the other night proved it too. Charm the locals and perhaps you'll be able to get to the root of all this supposedly random (but you know better) chaos in SimCity.
7 Paranormal03: Button Label: Tarot Card Reader (male)
Tarot Card Reader
8 Paranormal03: Popup: Description: Tarot Card Reader

Notes: "Branching out on your own" means that one has opened their own business establishment.

Branching out on your own to do more in-depth analysis of your customer's love life and family history is an interesting career change. Get to know your clients on a more personal level, up the aura of mystery in your personal appearance, and generally get away with being as odd as you'd like - everyone expects it, after all.
9 Paranormal04: Button Label: Hypnotist (male)
Hypnotist
10 Paranormal04: Popup: Description: Hypnotist

Notes: "helping" is in quotes to imply the desire is facetious, that their are ulterior motives behind the decision (primarily earning more money, even if it requires being fraudulent). "get in touch with their inner selves" refers to focusing on the client's spiritual side.

Your interest in "helping" your clients get in touch with their inner selves has prompted you to study hypnotism, and offer your services to calmly and peacefully help those seeking freedom from their poor Earthly habits.
11 Paranormal05: Button Label: Medium (male)

Notes: a "Medium" is one who speaks after being possessed or contacted by spirits of those no longer among the living. Done for pay, mostly.

Medium
12 Paranormal05: Popup: Description: Medium

Notes: "Otherworldly interference" refers to interruptions of a spiritual nature, and implies that souls of the deceased are contacting the Sim.

All that hypnotic work kept providing you with Otherworldly interference, so address it on a daily basis. Contact deceased family members, friends from former lives, and even the client's long lost guinea pig to the wonder and appreciation of all around you.
13 Paranormal06: Button Label: Dowser (male)

Notes: a "dowser" is one who is gifted with the ability to sense locations of certain missing people or things. Commonly known for finding undergroud water supplies in time of drought, or locating kidnapped or lost children, etc.

Dowser
14 Paranormal06: Popup: Description: Dowser

Notes: "gifts" refers to the abilities described in the title notes. "earn you the notice of..." means that the officials will here about you and pay attention, or perhaps decide to investigate you.

Use your gifts to help local organizations find everything from missing children to a new water supply. This will earn you the notice of local officials, and the hours are a bit odd, but the work is definitely interesting...
15 Paranormal07: Button Label: Police Psychic (male)

Notes: Police psychics are typically brought in on difficult, unsolved cases to help "profile" a suspect based on the current evidence, as well as any psychic readings from the crime scene or evidence on hand. Not a common part of police investigative work, typically regarded as a last option.

Police Psychic
16 Paranormal07: Popup: Description: Police Psychic

Notes: "profile" means to come up with a description of the life and behavior patterns of the suspect.

The local police force has noticed your work in the field and wants you to help profile and track down some of their toughest criminals. (Just hope they aren't your neighbors.) Late nights and strange phone calls abound, but you're doing the public a great service.
17 Paranormal08: Button Label: UFO Investigator (male)

Notes: "UFO" stands for unidentified flying object, typically implying an alien spacecraft.

UFO Investigator
18 Paranormal08: Popup: Description: UFO Investigator

Notes: "RV" stands for recreational vehicle, which is a self-contained residence in a vehicle about the size of a motorbus. "gassed up" means ensuring there is plenty of fuel available to drive the RV. "equipemtn finely tuned" refers to scientific instrumentation used to assess all sorts of things related to a UFO landing site, etc.

Keep the RV gassed up and the equipment finely tuned, because tracking down these UFO reports will take you all over the country in search of... well, who knows what? Develop many friends in the science community, and make sure your personal theories get talked about in many circles, so the word gets passed along.
19 Paranormal09: Button Label: Exorcist (male)

Notes: an "Exorcist" is one who banishes foreign spirits who have possessed a person.

Exorcist
20 Paranormal09: Popup: Description: Exorcist

Notes: "Higher Authority" refers to the spiritual plane, and also to Godly things. "New Way" is a play on a cult recently in the news in the US.

When science and the law can't provide answers, people turn to a higher authority. That's where you come in. Whether it's consecrating some earth or full-scale diabolical infestation removal, your powers are not questioned…nor is your cost. Save enough souls and make enough friends and you could be the shining path to a whole "New Way" of living.
21 Paranormal10: Button Label: Cult Leader (male)
Cult Leader
22 Paranormal10: Popup: Description: Cult Leader

Notes: "New Way, again, is a play on a name of a cult recently in the news. "messenger" refersto the Sims having Holy or Prophetic spiritual status. "deprogram" is a term used to describe intense indoctrination, or removal of same.

The New Way is here! And you are the messenger! Enforcing a highly regulated and disciplined lifestyle, you "deprogram" people from their selfish, materialistic ways. Politicians, movie stars, venture capitalists, they all want a glimpse of the truth. YOUR truth. THE TRUTH. And they will pay you anything to set them "free". Display this wealth openly, as a lesson against "false suffering."

Notes: Game reviewers write up opinion columns about new games before and after their release to the public. a "byline" is the location where the story's author's name is shown. "play them" is a play on words describing one's ability to play the game as well as emotionally manipulate the members of the game maker's company. "good press" is a positive review.

7 Journalism03: Button Label: Tabloid Writer (male)

Notes: "Tabloids" are newspapers which contain highly sensationaliszed stories, primarily about high-profile, famous people around the world. They are widely considered to be inaccurate, but are also viewed by many as highly entertaining. They are very popular in the US and Great Britain.

8 Journalism03: Popup: Description: Tabloid Writer

Your sensationalist side provides a great benefit in the high-circulation industry of tabloid journalism. The seedy side of reporting lets you focus more on the rich and famous, too.
9 Journalism04: Button Label: Paparazzi (male)

Notes: Parapazzi are photographers who focus exclusively on rich, famous, or news-worthy people. Notes: "your "in" on the rich..." refers to the awareness, knowledge, and familiarity with the rich...

Well, now since you're "in" on the rich and famous, you're capable of hunting them down and harrassing them all day AND night. Those tabloids pay better for scandalous photographs than they do for their accompanying articles, so live as vicariously as you like.

Notes: This description is a poem written about the guinea pig. Try to keep it in a poetical format.
When the house is warm and the food is hot,
The Guinea pig cries, "Forget me not."
Alas, some Sims may clean their own,
Only to forget a Guinea pig's home.

Hungry and cold, a pig feels no love.
Thus breeds contempt for masters above.
Expecting to play after many a night,
Who is surprised by the guinea pig bite?

Uncleaned, unloved, a pig's life means naught,
Like a child's plaything, it is simply forgot.
But warnings to all who turn a deaf ear,
Let the curse of the guinea always bring fear.

Notes: WW2 refers to World War 2.
Legend has it that Borrow abandoned his post as a submarine sailor during WW2 to lead the wild life of a painter in Tahiti. As is usual for this type of character, he quickly idealized Tahitian women as "noble savages" and set about recording their "natural, fertile" features onto black velvet, a medieval technique. While the man and most of his oeuvre have been lost, the legend lives on in thousands of untalented imitations. Originals, when they surface, fetch hundreds, if not thousands of dollars.
