Item Reaching Animations

a2o-reach-seatht.cmx c2o-reach-seatht.cmx a2o-reach-tableht-aroundchair.cmx c2o-reach-tableht-aroundchair.cmx

Sims reaching hand items (food, bills...) placed in unusual areas and heights. While the former two seem to be intended for Sims grabbing items placed on coffee tables, they were scrapped sometime later in development, being first introduced in subsequent expansion packs.

Shy On Phone Animation

15 December 1999 18ː35

TS1 a2o-phonewallclose-talkshy.gif TS1 c2o-phonewallclose-talkshy.gif
a2o-phonewallclose-talkshy.cmx c2o-phonewallclose-talkshy.cmx

This animation is randomly called by adult Sims on the Steering Committee prototype every time they use the phone, but isn't used on the final product. Since the personality system wasn't fully implemented then, it wasn't designed to reflect the characters' Outgoing scores.

Tree Interactions

25 June 1999 19ː47

a2o-tree1-whizzstart.cmx a2o-tree1-whizz.cmx a2o-tree1-eat1loop.cmx

The first three animations listed here clearly serve as immediate follow-ups to (also) unused files for sims sitting on the floor, hinting that the characters were meant to only do so outside, close to a tree. It is worthy noting that, in the final build, there are not any Sim actions available for tree objects at all — their major purpose is to climb the houses' gardening score. Earlier builds of the game contain scripts where Sims would autonomously pick fruits or relieve themselves by a tree if their Hunger and Bladder motives were very low.

Door Interactions

The doors open (and, under the right conditions, close) immediately once a Sim walks into them, instead.

Fountain Interaction

25 June 1999 19ː42

TS1 a2o-fountain2-benddown.gif The Sims - a2o-fountain2-splash.gif
a2o-fountain2-benddown.cmx a2o-fountain2-splash.cmx

Leftover animations originally intended for fountain2, an object that can be found in the Steering Committee prototype and was entirely scrapped from the final game. Notably, this fountain differs from the one in the final product because its water structure sits at ground level rather than being the same height as the Sims, which explains why Sims need to bend down to play with its water.

Jacuzzi Interaction

13 November 1999 17ː23

The Sims - a2o-hottub-turnon.gif
a2o-hottub-turnon.cmx

Unused as the Jacuzzi object raises its water levels automatically as Sims get in it rather than needing their manual prompt to be activated.

Stereo "Repairing" Animation

25 June 1999 19ː57

The Sims a2o-stereo-repair.gif
a2o-stereo-repair.cmx

Stereo objects have finished and unused SimAntics tree data that may cause them to stop responding, requiring a Sim's prompt to repair... or hit them. This animation doesn't seem to belong well to any of the available stereo objects, suggesting it was designed for a much earlier model.

Soccer Ball Animations

13 September 1999 16ː19

The Sims - a2o-kick-ball-hard.gif The Sims - a2o-kick-ball-lightly.gif The Sims - c2o-ball-kick-hard.gif The Sims - c2o-ball-kick-lightly.gif
a2o-kick-ball-hard.cmx a2o-kick-ball-lightly.cmx c2o-ball-kick-hard.cmx c2o-ball-kick-lightly.cmx

There are two known instances of pre-release screen snapshots displaying a soccer ball as a Buy Mode item (example) — but it is estimated that such object was scrapped late in development, making it, as of now, impossible to conclude how exactly would the Sims use it, save for the fact that the complete set of animations for it still exists in its retail releases of the game, for both child and adult characters.

A notable moment the player may spot "a2o-kick-ball-hard.cmx" being used is in The Sims Online (built off of The Sims‍ ' own engine), when kicking its soccer ball object lightly or hardly. It is not a safe bet to assume, however, that it operates the same way the scrapped soccer ball did.

Sofa Dusting Animation

31 August 1999 23ː13

The Sims - a2o-sofa-dust.gif
a2o-sofa-dust.cmx

Apparently, sofas were originally designed to get dirty over time. As all the pieces of furniture in game, the final's sofas are instead self-sustainable, and never break.

Toilet Animations

31 August 1999 23ː43

The Sims - a2o-toilet1-sittinggo.gif The Sims - c2o-toilet1-sittingo.gif
a2o-tolet1-sittinggo.cmx c2o-toilet1-sittinggo.cmx

Notoriously used in the Steering Committee prototype as the default animation for when a Sim is using a toilet.

Crying at TV Animations

31 August 1999 23ː35

The Sims - a2o-tv1-watchcry-stand.gif The Sims - c2o-tv1-watchcry-stand.gif
a2o-tv1-watchcry-stand.cmx c2o-tv1-watchcry-stand.cmx

While the equivalent of the animations where Sims cry while sitting was later repurposed in the base game for when Sims lose a game of chess, the standing counterparts didn't achieve the same fate. Sims in the Steering Committee prototype would occasionally cry when watching the Romance television channel. Since the characters' reactions toward the television channels were changed later in development to mirror their personality scores, Sims in the final product can only either laugh or have a tantrum as they watch television, as the crying reaction is never called for unknown reasons.

Eating Animations

25 June 1999 19ː44

TS1 a2o-sit-starteat.gif The Sims - a2o-eat.gif TS1 a2o-stopeat.gif
a2o-sit-starteat.cmx a2o-eat.cmx a2o-stopeat.cmx

Do not mistake with a2o-sit-scoot-stabfood-lift.cmx, one of the seven sequences of animations that constitute one adult Sim's meal. This one, instead, exceptionally illustrates a Sim using their right hand to eat. Used in the Steering Committee prototype.

Getting In Carpool Animation

25 June 1999 18ː50

The Sims - a2o-car-getinl.gif The Sims - c2o-car-getinr.gif
a2o-car-getinl.cmx c2o-car-getinr.cmx

All cars contain animation strings, which correspond to working animations in the game's data, for opening the doors and sitting down inside both a seat on the left and right. The cars, however, have no door graphics which can be opened or interior graphics which a 3D animation proper door could sit in top of. These animations are referenced in carname::send person to work but the tree actually skips over the primitives which run them in the final game.

Toaster Oven Child Animations

Even if children Sims were not wired to cook meals the same way adults do, one can still find such animations that suggests a scrapped child Sim ability to handle raw meals by themselves, using an innocuous toaster oven. You are technically capable of making an adult to abandon a to-be-prepared dish and try asking a child to continue the preparing but, since the scripting tree that manages the food-making routines refrains kids from completing the interaction, the command will be canceled as soon as it starts.
