Unused Models

Dead rabbit

Originally, Sam the dog was going to be feasting on a maggot infested rabbit, making Clementine's dog bite more concerning than in the final game. This is actually the same model seen at the beginning of "Starved For Help" from the first season of The Walking Dead. Unused audio also exists related to what Sam was eating.

Luke's unused original design

This is an interesting find as the model technically isn't unused, but it's still worth mentioning. Luke's early design is actually used in the game, but obviously not for Luke himself during regular gameplay. The model for the person in the All That Remains diorama is labeled "obj_lukeFlashlightDiorama201", which tells us that Luke is the one in the menu for All That Remains instead of Winston like you'd think, and the model actually uses his original design, not his finished design. The Picture of the model will be taken from InColdBlood's cut content documentation. There are files in the game that indicate that Winston was indeed supposed to be here instead of Luke, but Luke being in the 201 diorama is just another thing that speaks for the placeholder-ish nature that the menu of this game has.

Scrapped Content

Winston rushes Clementine into the river

This is taken from an animation Reel by character animator Omaikel Alfaro, who has animation credits for various Telltale games. The full animation reel can be viewed here. For a more in depth viewing of these animations, watch InColdBlood's cut content documentation.

This scene depicts Clementine falling into the River after her scuffle with Winston and the scavengers in the forest, except this time Winston pushes both himself and Clem into the River. It seems as though Winston was originally going to survive his initial encounter with Clementine, at least for a little while longer than he does in the final game.

After Clem falls into the river, an interactive segment would then play out where you would have to push left and right to avoid rocks and to prevent yourself from drowning. Winston was supposed to hold onto Clementine's leg during this interactive segment.

Luke and Nick carrying Pete

Luke and Nick carrying Pete after he gets bitten. According to Stephen McManus, who was a lead designer at Telltale, Pete was supposed to make it back to the cabin, and you'd be presented with the choice of either keeping his secret or letting the others know he was bitten. He would stay behind at the Cabin to face off with Carver whenever he showed up. You can also see Luke and Nick's original designs in this unused scene

Unused shed animations

This scene is interesting because Clementine still has her backpack when inside the shed, which she does not have in the final version. Clementine keeps her gun in her backpack, so there are interesting things that this animation could be suggesting if you take it at face value, although of course it is not clear when and how she would have regained her backpack earlier in the story, or if she would've lost it at all. It's worth pointing out that she doesn't have her backpack in the previous animation with Winston. It's an interesting detail

Unused Luke and Clementine scene

Luke is stopping Clementine trying to get out of the Cabin. It seems as though Luke was supposed to catch Clementine snooping around the Cabin.

Developer Quote

On his Tumblr, Kent Mudle had this to say regarding 201

"201 was one of the must tumultuous episodes I ever worked on. It was honestly pretty demoralizing, by the time I got to do my final scene (the bit where Clem arrives at the cabin and is put in the shed) I just wanted to be working on anything else. I did Clem arrives on the beach, and it was like, about dragging a boat to make a little shelter for yourself, all gone. I swear you met the dog there in an old version and he hung out with you for multiple scenes before the bite. I did a bit where when Clem fell in the river it was actually interactive, like pushing left and right to avoid rocks. I worked at least a little on that Clem/Christa in the woods scene, probably just the freewalk part. I recall when they added the log to burn instead of one of the two pictures. And that’s only my stuff, the rest of the episode probably has a lot of different horror stories of waste."

What's interesting to point out about this, is that it actually was not known that you would spend more time with Sam before he would bite Clementine

Cut fishing Scene

In an interview with Jessica Brezzo, who was a lead animator at Telltale, she revealed that there was an entire fishing sequence that got cut from the game. The entire interview can be found here.

"There were a lot of things from the game at one point, there was a whole fishing sequence in episode 1 that got cut. But it had some awesome Alvin lines where he was complaining about holding fish, and some pretty funny Clementine animations where she was trying to grab onto fish and put them into a cooler."

There is physical evidence about her statements of a cut fishing sequence in the code of the game. In the BackwoodsStream.lua file, you can see all of the programming for the Fishing scene

These are not images in the game itself, but are mockups made by a Russian User of the Telltale forums named Резиновый гусёнок, which are definitely worth sharing. They are a good representation of how the scene might have looked like. The origin of the Mockups as well as a Russian translation of Jessica Brezzo's interview can be found here.

Clementine's unused hat animations

Unused Music

This track is used in the final game, but it originally had a different purpose. While it can be heard in the Import File section when you start a new game, it was originally meant to accompany the menu slide of All That remains. It also plays whenever you pause the game.

This track could be mistaken for the music that plays in the beginning of the game when you are at the truck stop with Omid and Christa, but it's actually a different version of the song that most likely would have played during the cut fishing scene near the end of All That Remains. The song itself is called All That Remains, and we know this and its most likely placement in the story thanks to the official Season 2 album release by series composer Jared emerson-johnson, who was gracious enough to put all of the songs in chronological order.

Unused Voice lines

Scavengers

Ralph, one of the raiders attacking Christa at the start of the episode has an unused line from when they first encountered her.

Audio Transcript
"No one needs to get hurt... Yet"

Ralph also has a voice line that is labeled "NV_Ralph_Hit_Ground_03". The context behind this line is that Ralph was supposed to accidentally get shot in the ear by Victor, another one of the scavengers, and he would fall on the ground. He would later reappear in the story with half of his ear missing, and Clementine would be hesitant to trust him because of what happened with Christa in the woods. As you can probably guess, Mike was supposed to be Ralph

Clementine

Clementine has a unused line related to the maggot infested rabbit, It would have played when you first met Sam.

Rebecca

For some strange reason, Rebecca has unused grunts of pain in the episode 1 voice files. It's unknown why these are in the episode 1 archive

Omid

Omid has some unused voice lines where he announces himself before entering the truck stop restroom where he inevitably meets his demise.

"Clementine?"
Audio Transcript
"Everything ok?"

The last line cuts off suddenly, but in case you didn't understand, he would open the door to the restroom and get shot mid sentence. For a clearer representation of how this would sound like in game, I have combined multiple sound files together to make it sound more coherent. To reiterate, this is a combination of multiple different sound files.
