Tuff E Nuff is one of the many Street Fighter II clones released during the era. The game is infamous for its hilarious US box cover.

Localized Version of Rei's "Defeated" Icon
Like the character's main portrait, Rei's icon when defeated was also reworked during localization, but unlike the main one, this one was left unused as the pre-round/post-fight dialog that exists in the Japanese version wasn't localized and was made inaccessible by normal means in the US and European versions.
Non-Obscured Pre-Stage/Stage Select Background
Unobscured | Obscured |
---|---|
There's a bit more to the stage select/pre-stage character bio screen background than what can normally be seen in-game.
Fragments of "Brawl Brothers"
In the international versions, fragments (mostly graphics) of Brawl Brothers, an earlier Jaleco title, can be found within the following data ranges:
- 057E20 - 058000
- 05BE80 - 05C0C0
- 05EAC0 - 05F2A0
- 05FFA0 - 064A80
- 06ACA0 - 06AEC0
- 074D80 - 0778E0
The remaining bits of data are all in the same locations as they are in the ROM of Brawl Brothers. Interestingly, these fragments do not exist in the Japanese version.
Regional Differences
Cutscenes
The dialog system was removed at a game level in the international versions. In the Japanese version, a short conversation would spring up at the start and end when each of the four characters confronted an enemy. Also, each of the characters had an ending, which were removed and only the credits were left.
Other Changes
This page or section needs more images. There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this. |
Japan | International |
---|---|
- Rei's portrait was redrawn to look more masculine. Her sprites and voice clips were not changed, though.
- The final boss's name was changed from Jado to Jade.
- In Dead Dance, the fighters' faces (except for Jado/Jade) become bloodied when they reach half health, similar to Art of Fighting.
- In Dead Dance, it is possible to press Select on both controllers in Story or VS CPU to take control of the opponent. Tuff E Nuff instead has a cheat code that lets the player select the bosses in VS CPU, and a second one (that requires entering the previous one first) that allows for selecting them in 1P VS 2P.
- A great portion of the soundtrack was altered for international release.
Error Message
Region lockout
If the American version of the game detects that it's running on a European system or vice versa, this error message will be displayed after the intro sequence. The Japanese version lacks region lockout and thus does not contain this message.
