EX Jinsei Game II Leftovers
So this is where all that "space constrains" buzz came from.

General Differences

Intro

On startup, the game shows a "Licensed by Nintendo" screen. This screen was removed from the final release, instead opting to put this text below the game's copyright.

Title Screen

Proto Final

Aside from the logo, the title screen's design is a lot simpler and completely different.

  • There's no animated film scroll or stars.
  • The background uses a combination of blue and orange patterns instead of being a solid blue color.
  • The pattern in the background isn't sunken in.
  • The game's logo is placed up higher.
  • "Press Start" is missing a white outline.
  • The copyright simply reads "© SEGA CORPORATION", doesn't list any years and lacks the "Licensed by Nintendo" text.

Menu

Proto Final
  • The button prompts are placed a few pixels lower.
  • The bar on the bottom where the text scrolls is a bit thicker. Because of this, the scrolling text is also placed a bit higher.
  • The joystick prompt appears different; two yellow arrows are present and the joystick is shown from a top view.
  • Present in sonic/us is a small file titled menu.tcs. This is a small text document used for managing the menu's background. Weirdly enough, it references .tm2 files, a file format that stores graphics commonly used by PlayStation 2 games. It isn't used whatsoever.
file 0 = menu\bg\menu_bg0.tm2
image 0 = 0, 0, CMPR
texture 0 = 0, x

file 1 = menu\bg\menu_bg1.tm2
image 1 = 1, 1, CMPR
texture 1 = 1, x

Game Selection

Proto Final
  • As might already be obvious; Sonic the Hedgehog CD is displayed in the selection of games and was intended to be playable. The game has a fully written description and has its manual fully scanned and implemented, though it lacks a title screen. Selecting the game boots up Sonic the Hedgehog instead. As mentioned on this page, Yuji Naka told GameSpot in an interview that the game was cut due to "space constrains"[1] with no other reasons given. However, the real reason involved issues with the Sega CD emulator and wanting to make use of the ADX audio format. Since there was no time to reprogram the emulator, Sonic CD's inclusion was scrapped[2]. Interestingly, it's possible this might've been one of the last prototypes that featured Sonic CD before the game ended up on the chopping block, as a hands-on preview from IGN posted on August 23rd revealed that Sonic CD would "absolutely not be making the cut" according to Sega[3].

must not be missed. Amy and a rival,
enemy, Metal Sonic, make their first

Comic Covers

Path: sonic/us/comics

A bunch of comic covers depicting references to Marvel characters were censored in the final game to avoid potential lawsuits[2]. However, three of the comic scans in this prototype were left uncensored.

This page or section details content from the September 2020 Nintendo Leak.
Check the September 2020 Nintendo Leak category for more pages also sourced from this material.

On September 9th 2020, a large amount of Nintendo DSi source code and lotchecks for both a chunk of DSiWare and Game Boy were leaked online. Within these leaks is a repository for MasterEditorTWLChecker, which mistakenly seems to have left in a late prototype of Flipnote Studio, predating its Japanese release.

This build can be found in platinum.7z\twl.7z\TWLToolsRED\build\tools\MasterEditor\MasterEditorTWLChecker\ORG.SRL. An installable .tad version (ORG.TAD) is also present in this folder.

Menu Differences

Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: What is the string below the FINALROM text? Possibly Hatena related?
  • The title screen displays a build date over the Nintendo copyright of December 4th, 2008 at 23:30:37. This puts this prototype roughly 3 weeks before its Japanese release.

  • The amount of free space left is displayed in Flipnotes rather than blocks.

  • The screen before connecting to Flipnote Hatena only has an OK button.

Hmmm...
To do:
Take screenshot of this.
  • Error messages use the default thick font rather than the slim font.

Audio Differences

Hmmm...
To do:
The sample is so short that the built-in web player can't play it. Reupload it.
  • A sound of toggling between the notepad and pencil menu plays after opening a Flipnote.
  • No sound effect plays after opening the Send menu.
  • One of the sound samples in WAVEARC_STATIC/SWAV_21.swav was changed. The sample's length was extended in the final release.
Proto (96 bytes) Final (216 bytes)

Manual Differences

Hmmm...
To do:
  • Just some notes for now:
    • The title screen shown is from an earlier build (still present in the final manual but on a different page).
    • Text all throughout is different.
    • A "thank you for downloading Ugoku Memo" screen is present (common on other DSiWare) that was removed from the final.
    • One of the screenshots showing the notepad portion has different text and a temporary kanji.
    • Couple of screenshots are different, including the flipnote gallery and Hatena website.
    • The Hatena URL is different. (Was this ever used or just an internal thing???)

Miscellaneous Differences

  • Transparency effects are by default turned off on new Flipnotes.
  • Error codes aren't displayed in the usual 34XXXX format. Instead, it's just a single or double digit.
  • All of the graphics are stored in the rom itself rather than being stored in one of the arm binaries. These graphics can be found in a folder titled LayoutData.

misc shit (remove later)

  • Some messages or entries aren't present in this build.
    • This build has 153 messages, final has 181.
    • This build has 92 entries in its .sdat file, final has 101.
