Book of Crafting Secrets
Item Level 605 |
Binds to account |
Whenever you receive a skill gain in Tailoring, you get twice the normal amount. |
Requires Tailoring (1) |
This item indicates that Blizzard was considering items that would have given extra skill-ups, extremely similar to the bind-on-account armor that gives extra experience. While it's curious as to why they never implemented it, during Mists of Pandaria and especially Warlords of Draenor, Blizzard took steps to lower the amount of time and money spent leveling crafting professions.
Indalamar's Holy Hand Grenade
Item Level 1 |
Binds when picked up |
Unique |
Sell Price: 100g |
Indalamar was a tester during the original game's beta who was later hired by Blizzard as an itemization developer/specialist due to his work on perfecting the Warrior class.
Once had the flavor text: "Use: Blesses all targets with a holy infusion of power or curse them with the bane of all raiders." When used, it produces a brief green 'stench' visual effect on all attackable mobs, even critters.
Indalamar's New Holy Hand Grenade
Item Level 1 |
Binds when picked up |
Unique |
Use: Blesses all targets with a holy infusion of power or curse them with the bane of all raiders. |
Sell Price: 100g |
This item, like the above, is a reference to the player Indalamar. However, this one sports a Use effect. The use effect doesn't seem to do anything at all beyond an animation.
[PLACEHOLDER TIER 3 ITEM]
Item Level 665 |
Binds when picked up |
Max Stack: 999 |
This item was a placeholder for the Abrogator Stone, the item needed for the third stage of the legendary ring quest introduced in Warlords of Draenor.
Vessel of Rebirth DEPRECATED
Item Level 70 |
Binds when picked up |
Unique |
This item begins a quest |
Requires Level 100 |
This item is a copy of the used Vessel of Rebirth item. It starts an also unused copy of the same quest. For some reason, it requires level 100.
Certificate of Appreciation
Item Level 74 |
Binds when picked up |
Use: Combine 40 Certificates of Appreciation to create a special Limited Edition thank you gift. (PTR Only) |
"Thanks for your assistance. Unfortunately, your epics are in another dungeon. Please try again." |
Max Stack: 40 |
Sell Price: 2g 50s |
This was used during the Wrath of the Lich King Public Test Realm sessions as a fun way to deal with non-itemized bosses. These dropped, and players could build the companion pet XS-001 Constructor Bot with forty of them.
Pattern: Onyxia Scale Breastplate
Item Level 62 |
Binds when picked up |
Use: Teaches you how to craft an Onyxia Scale Breastplate. |
Requires Leatherworking (300) |
Requires Rugged Leather (40), Scale of Onyxia (12), Black Dragonscale (60), Rune Thread (2) |
Sell Price: 3g |
This is the pattern that teaches how to craft the Onyxia Scale Breastplate, an unused armor that never made it into the final game. Because of this, the pattern goes unused as well.
Scales of Onyxia
Item Level 60 |
Max Stack: 20 |
Sell Price: 50s |
Item Level 60 |
Max Stack: 20 |
These items are indications that the Scale of Onyxia trade good might have been more used in more recipes, which is currently used in only one: the Onyxia Scale Cloak.
Iron Belly Spirits
Item Level 85 |
Binds when picked up |
Toy |
Use: Toss a mug of Iron Belly Spirits to the target to raise their spirits for 1 min. (10 Min Cooldown) |
Quest: Raising Spirits |
Zone: Townlong Steppes |
This toy item never made it to live, though it was available during the Mists of Pandaria public beta.
Mysterious Flower
Item Level 100 |
Unique |
Toy |
Use: Gives the user mysterious flowers. (30 Min Cooldown) |
"A mysterious flower from a mysterious orc." |
This toy item never made it to live. Players had to interact with flower objects in several Draenor zones, which would eventually award this toy item once they were all found. It was a reference to an easter egg found in Warcraft II.
Curiously, one of the flowers that the developers overlooked in Talador made it to live. Though it was removed in Patch 6.2.0, about eight months after release, it was a fully functioning event, and it's quite unclear why they couldn't have just enabled the other flowers.
Pneumatic Pony Cannon
Item Level 20 |
Binds when used |
Requires Level 20 |
"Say hello to my lil' pony!" |
Sell Price: 75s |
This absolutely disgusting item does not have a use effect, so it's mind boggling what it was meant for. Perhaps a joke for data miners?
S.N.U.R.F. Gun
Item Level 81 |
Binds when used |
Use: Makes another player appear less menacing. (1 Min Cooldown) |
Sell Price: 5g |
Most likely was going to be an item Engineers could craft. Unfortunately never made it to live.
Plans: Thorium Greatsword
Item Level 52 |
Use: Teaches you how to make a Thorium Greatsword. |
Requires Blacksmithing (260) |
Requires Thorium Bar (10), Dense Grinding Stone (2), Rugged Leather (4) |
Sell Price: 30s |
This is the pattern that teaches how to craft the Thorium Greatsword. Because the Thorium Greatsword was never implemented, these plans weren't either.
Brazie's Gnomish Pleasure Device
Item Level 80 |
Binds when picked up |
Unique |
"If you get caught with this, I don't know you." |
Sell Price: 12g 50s |
Well, not even sure where to start with this one. Most likely added as an item that the character Brazie would sell, but was scrapped, likely for being too suggestive.
This item had a use effect that was removed in Warlords of Draenor: "Use: Infuses the user with 1,000 megavolts of pure gnomish pleasure. (5 Sec Cooldown)"
Gloria's Glorious Gliding Goodies
Item Level 1 |
Binds to Battle.net account |
"Contains negative calories." |
Max Stack: 250 |
Sell Price: 60c |
Item that would have given non-flying non-combat pets the ability to glide along with you. Cut for unknown reasons.
Rogue Items
There are several unused and mysterious "Knowledge" recipes that require the Rogue class. These teach spells that require reagents, and once used turn your player model into the corresponding monster. They were more than likely intended for Rogue class quests.
It's worth noting that many of the reagents required stayed in the game as flavor items that served no purpose.
Item Level 13 |
Classes: Rogue |
Use: Learn how to disguise yourself as a Stonesplinter Trogg. |
Requires Level 13 |
Sell Price: 1s 62c |
Requires Linen Cloth and Stonesplinter Rags.
Item Level 13 |
Classes: Rogue |
Use: Learn how to disguise yourself as a Dalaran Wizard. |
Requires Level 13 |
Requires Linen Cloth and a Dalaran Wizard's Robe.
Item Level 13 |

Requires Level 13 |
Requires a Deckhand's Shirt and Linen Cloth.

Requires Level 22 |
Requires Dark Iron Leather and Wool Cloth.
Item Level 13 |
Classes: Rogue |
Use: Learn how to disguise yourself as a Syndicate Highwayman. |
Requires Level 22 |
Requires a Mark of the Syndicate and Wool Cloth.
Thieven' Kit
Item Level 16 |
Binds when picked up |
Unique |
Classes: Rogue, Monk |
"Invalid loot table, crashes when you modify Miscellaneous" |
This item is likely an early version of Thieves' Tools.
Deprecated Cowardly Flight Potion
Item Level 25 |
Requires Level 15 |
Max Stack: 5 |
Sell Price: 85c |
This item was changed during an unknown patch to have no use effect. It used to have a use effect of causing the user to run from nearby enemies in a random direction. It's unknown why the effect was removed when the item isn't obtainable.
It has an unused recipe too:
Item Level 25 |
Requires Alchemy (125) |
"Teaches you how to make a Cowardly Flight Potion." |
Pet Fish
Item Level 20 |
Binds when used |
Use: Summons your pet fish. He used to look healthier.... (3 Min Cooldown) |
Item that summons a stationary dead fish.
...What did you expect?
Pet Stone
Item Level 20 |
Binds when used |
Use: Summons your pet stone. It doesn't seem very active though... (3 Min Cooldown) |
It's an item that summons a stationary rock. Probably an earlier (and more fun) version of the Pet Rock item.
...You weren't expecting anything else, right?
Powerful Smelling Salts
Item Level 50 |
Unique |
Requires First Aid (200) |
This item had its use effect removed in an unknown patch. It used to have an effect of bringing a dead player back to life with 15% health and mana. Probably intended as something those with the First Aid skill could craft and use, akin to the Goblin Jumper Cables. It was, unfortunately, never implemented. It also has a recipe:
Item Level 50 |
Requires First Aid (250) |
"Teaches you how to make Powerful Smelling Salts." |
Weapons of Mass Destruction
Item Level 1 |
Use: Instantly Kills the target. I hope you feel good about yourself now..... |
Item Level 1 |
Use: Kills all enemies in a 30 yard radius. Cheater. |
These two items are obviously Game Master testing items.
