The Game Gear version of Battleship is a direct conversion specifically of the NES version. Because it has a better color palette, the Game Gear version features superior graphics to the NES version, though inferior sound due to its more limited PSG chip.
Also, it was programmed by only one guy!

At 0x1D06 and repeated multiple times is a remnant from an earlier version.
