This page contains notes for the game Star Fox 2.

SuperFX Version

It's a very common misconception that Star Fox 2 requires the GSU-2 "SuperFX 2" chip; this mistake was even printed in the official Nintendo guide accompanying the release of the SNES Classic Edition. However, this claim isn't actually true: The game is fully compatible with the earlier GSU-1 "SuperFX" chip, though it is forward-compatible with the SuperFX 2 as well. (Since the game never shipped in cartridge form, there's no way of knowing which part Nintendo would've actually used, but the community has tested the game on both chips successfully.)

The only difference between the SuperFX 1 and 2 is the maximum ROM size they support: SuperFX games can be up to 1 MB in size, while SuperFX 2 games can be up to 2 MB. The Star Fox 2 ROM is only 1 MB in size, and thus doesn't require the SuperFX 2.

All of this being said, it certainly is true that Star Fox 2 has more powerful hardware onboard than the original Star Fox. The first game used the "MARIO" chip, which was the very first implementation of the SuperFX design and ran at half the speed of the later GSU-1 and GSU-2. Many people, understandably, conflate the "MARIO" chip and the SuperFX 1, when in fact they are distinctly different parts.
